Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

The only thing that I can imagine while looking at this is that Nintendo enjoys giving me aesthetic nightmares.

Who in their right mind would design something that looks like this?

And since the unit doesn't have to close anymore is there any legitimate reason why the screens are still different sizes?

So they can use the same parts and machines in manufacturing.

I said Ghad Damn, out loud, 3 or 4 times as each new detail released. $129 is insanity when the OG 3DS routinely sells for $149. Might have made sense at $99 or less, but at $130 I just don't get who this appeals to. Why would a kid want a non-hinged design and from whom is $20 a great amount of money? You realize had Nintendo saved all this 2DS R&D, marketing, and manufacturing set up they probably would have come out on top dropping the 3DS to $149 (or lower) officially.

I have a 3DSXL and I want one. I fucking hate clamshell. I do not play my games outside the house and this look more comfortable on the couch to me.

honestly I will be getting one because my wife uses my XL all fucking day for animal crossing and @ $120 dollars its an easy decision.

Nintendo will sell so many of these.

$130.00 + Tax ~8% = $140.00

...

The atheistic design of this handheld shows how out of touch Nintendo is right now. Consumers expectations have changed due to our new handheld overlords (apple). That includes teens and pre-teens.

I said the same thing when they launched the 3DS.

it's not the direct competition, real tablets (and kids playing angry birds, fruit ninja, etc) are, but just explaining how a visual design that seems outwardly clunky can be kid targeted.

Super Mario 3D Land.

With 3D off, you are at a direct disadvantage.

i beat 8-crown in 6 lives with 3d off a few weeks ago after having not touched the game since last october

I think this will do well with the 3-8 year old age group, towards which this is clearly targeted. Kids want Pokemon, mom buys them the cheapest device that can play it. I assume the 2DS will be quite profitable for Nintendo.

Why can't they just give us a DS Lite that plays 3DS games, lol.

Although I think this is a nice cheaper alternative, I can see children hating their parents for not getting them a legit 3DS haha.

Why would you do this? This is just beyond stupid why would you make two handhelds when the 3DS is going strong, sure 2ds is cheaper but it was never neccesary.

Am I in the minority that doesn't use the tip of their thumb for buttons and analog sticks? That still looks too small.

Nah, you're not alone. This device really does not look comfortable for me personally, I want to try it to see if I'm being harsh, but something feels off. I grip my devices in my palms, I just don't see enough to hold onto here.

This is literally stupid. I'm sorry, but this reeks of Wii U slack pick-up. It's an elongated GBA with another screen...

You seem surprised that Nintendo is releasing another design of their handheld, something they do extremely often. Wii U slack pickup or not, Nintendo is fond is printing money and this 2DS is going to do just that. So it really isn't in any way stupid.

God damn this thread. People getting bent over a budget version for kid. We even have people complaining about no 2nd analog, again for the budget version for kid. Come the fuck on.

This thread is Exhibit A of how GAF conventional wisdom is typically the complete opposite of market demand.

And LOL at complaining about 2nd analog stick on the 3DS.

It is NEVER going to happen, nor should it.

I don't know if this has been pointed:

So yeah, kids under 7 are not supposed to watch 3D movies or games, so they have the excuse to make this device, after all parents don't give a flying butt about "design" and "aesthetics" they just want the cheapest pokemon machine avalible.

For those losing their shit: this system is not meant for you. It is designed for young children. I have a three-year-old that I do not dare let play with my DS or GBA Advance as I know that she will wreck the hinge. She has shown this the few times that she has played with it.

So, it is more durable, cheaper, and it loses the 3D that is supposedly bad for young eyes. I think it's great and will get one for my daughter.

Nintendo needs to market this heavily and let all parents know about this thing, and it could be a success.

This device makes a lot of sense:

- Tablet design to play into the booming tablet market, less intimidating for children/familes that are only used to tablets.
- Unessential features (3D, stereo sound) cut to drive production cost down, so it can be sold to children/families for cheap.
- Sell alongside Pokemon for mass casual appeal.
- No vulnerable hinges kids can easily damage.
- No second stick because that would be stupid. This is a budget 3DS, not an upgrade.
- No 3DS brand to avoid "why can't this [3DS Lite] not play 3D? I want my money back!" questions.

The only two things I can't wrap my head around are

- It's designed to cut production costs as much as possible, yet there's still a 3D camera in there?
- Pokemon is a system seller, it's gonna sell a shit ton of 3DSs anyway. If I was Nintendo, I wouldn't want to give them a cheap option.

If you are not a kid/don't have kids/already have a 3DS (XL) you are not supposed to be interested in this device. You are not the target audience.
Agreed. It's just hideously ugly though. Cost reduction is the main thing here IMO; that 3d screen was obviously a huge portion of the cost of the device.

All 3DS retail game packaging says "Nintendo 3DS", wont this 2DS confuse general consumers?

What about the displays that say "Only on 3DS"?

This new slate handheld is fucking ugly. It just is. I also don't see it as a good move, from Nintendo.

It's actually funny though: it's as if Nintendo is telling the people that wanted a 3Dless 3DS, that they listened. Nintendo responded by removing the clamshell, lowering the cost and giving them the ugliest handheld I've ever seen. Don't like 3D? Have this monstrosity!
There is a big icon on the 2DS box that says "Plays all DS and 3DS games."

...

my bad I thought it was $120 even at $129 its a good fucking deal for a parent getting one for a kid.

also nobody adds sales tax to the price when they are talking about retail pricing of a product. Some people don't have sales tax you know.

but I get what you are doing.
