Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

Actually, I wonder if one could replace the bottom screen with the larger one from the 3DS XL to make it look like 1 screen...

The firmware is surely tuned for this big screen. It's not a PC. You can't mix and match hardware like that.

So my 6 yr old wants a 3DS, and this is targeted towards kids, but how in the holy hell is a kid supposed to hold that?

So many posters will be eating crow when this thing launches. I'm collecting all the salt needed to season it from this thread. It shall be delicious!

I think this is one of those times that the GAF consensus is totally wrong. Nintendo is going to make so much money off this thing, especially at that price, and especially launching alongside Pokemon. I'm not gonna buy it, but I'd bet a lot on it being sold out this holiday season.

I've seen 3-year-olds handle iPads, I don't think they'll have a problem. I wouldn't be surprised if the phenomena of kids playing iPads inspired this design.

You know what, as much as I detest that horrid design and think Nintendo would be better off using their dosh on something else, if that piece of shit can help handhelds regain control over the smartphones then I welcome the 2DS

GAF never changes. Quite a few overreactions here just like with the Circle Pad Pro for the 3DS or the CCP XL for the 3DS XL.

Everyone screamed "oh my god, oh my god, it looks so bad" and then some time later "hey, that's actually more comfortable to hold".

Same here. I bet all of that stops as soon as someone actually gets their hands on it.

So far, it definitely looks better to hold than the OG 3DS, which just was too small for big hands and not good for lengthly gaming sessions.

So if they knew people don't really use the 3D capabilities, why not release a better handheld. Dual sticks, better screen, remove the useless cameras, the battery life should increase etc.

Nintendo research and development is seriously going downhill. Microsoft spends $100 million making its great controller even better, Nintendo can't spend the time making its controls/buttons any different from the DS Lite.

My 5 year old cousin asked my aunt for a 3DS for Christmas two weeks ago. She looked up the 3DS and didn't really like the design saying that the hinges made it look "like he could snap it in half". Her fears were pretty justified because he did snap one of her older flip phones in half last year. She really wasn't keen on getting him the 3DS.

I just showed this to her. She likes this design much better for her kid. Then she asked me the price. When I told her it was $130 she was sold and said she would get him this version for sure.

Guys, I think Nintendo might actually be onto something here.

This seriously doesn't fold into a clamshell? What in the actual fuck?

It's releasing alongside Pokemon. Parents pick this up so their kids play Pokemon. A flat design encourages screen peeping. Other kids look on and wonder what the big deal is. Badabing Badaboom. Pokemon global sensation yet again.

My god. It's like Nintendo thought, "How do we make the 3DS even more uncomfortable to hold?" At least the shoulder buttons seem to be an improvement.

Depends on if kids ask for Pokemon... and if the kids ask for Pokemon, wouldn't they already have a 3DS? And if they don't, wouldn't they just get those regular 3DS bundles?

I'm guessing this is the cheapest you can package the hardware and still have it run 3DS games. Those hinges did probably cost a few cents more than not having them, still pretty desperate looking...

LiIon batteries are expensive, and Nintendo doesn´t use the cheap LiPoly shit smartphone manufacturers use because their systems are supposed to last for more than two years.

Lithium polymer batteries are lithium ion batteries. They just use a polymer for the electrolyte so they can be square while non polymer batteries needs to have cylindrical cells like old/big laptop batteries.

Too bad about the weird deisgn, though I will admit it is kinda growing on me.

Still, Pokemon will sell even more copies thanks to this thing. And then other 3DS games will sell more... then more games will come out for the system...

Bring it on

No? X and Y are the first 3DS Pokemon games. It's quite likely they wouldn't have one at this point. And of course, for many X and Y may be the first Pokemon game or game they're interested in on the 3DS period. It just seems... incredibly unlikely that Nintendo has already fully captured that market and gotten everyone who's interested in it to buy a 3DS already. Basically, I know this can't be what you mean... but under this logic, even putting the 2DS aside, you're saying here that Pokemon would NOT be a system seller for the 3DS, because the people who want Pokemon already have one. Of course, that's obviously silly. So why would it be any different with the 2DS? The reasoning here is kinda just confusing to me.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Such a weird move. It's even more hideous and less portable than 3DS, and going to create more market confusion by being called 2DS. I know it's not for me but are parents really going to buy this for their kids? What's worse is, are going to buy 3DS games with this? I guess we'll find out. It does have the major plus going for it being so cheap and can still play the new Pokemon games, which might be all it needs.

Just re-posting this as people don't get it.

For 7 year old and younger.

Also before saying it is ugly I would give it the benefit of the doubt in terms of ergonomics. I cannot play more than 1hour on my 3DSXL before feeling discomfort.
This looks bigger than the 3DS (not sure about the XL). How exactly are smaller children's hands supposed to use it and access the buttons while feeling comfortable in their hands?

All I am seeing is a semi tablet design, while keeping the button layout (why?) and then somehow it is aimed at young children (because kids like tablets?). The leapfrog products fit that kind of niche better in both game and tablet setups with sturdier designs at a mostly lower price point. Tablet Console

Game wise the 2DS will probably "age" better, but if something is looking to fill the younger audience (learning/adaptation device) and can be disposed after a few years or could break, then the leap frog offerings are far more sensible.

This thing looks hilarious. If I got one I'd start thinking my parents don't love me
If you're like four or five years old, the age Nintendo is targeting with this thing? I severely doubt it--you'd love your parents instead. Kids that young don't have quite the obsession with electronics all needing to be sleek and black and minimalist and whatever that adults do.

I foresee some disappointed kids.

How so? They don't care about 3D in fact my oldest hates it because he has to hold the 3DS just right to see with it on, they get to play all of the 3DS games and I get to save money. Please explain how my 8 year old and 3 year old will be disappointed by getting a 2DS instead of a 3DS?

They are obviously going to make a ton of money with it. Doesn't change the fact that looks like dog shit. I mean, if you are gonna make a kid stare at that ugly piece of crap to play a game, at least have the courtesy to blind them with 3d to take away some of the sting.

Has this been posted yet?
Curiously, the 2DS is even more of a tablet-style system than it appears at first glance, as it actually features a single large screen in its center, not two separate ones. As one of their cost-cutting design measures, Nintendo reduced the number of screens in the system from two to one, and the appearance of separate screens is merely simulated by the way the case masks out the extraneous portions. This means the entire screen is by necessity a touchscreen, with the upper screen protected by a layer of plastic that sits above it.
