Only 5 countries will have full Xbone voice commands at launch [Update in OP]

They also need to announce the release date at PAX just to shut down the yield issue rumors.

Yield issues doesn't necessarily equate to a launch delay, MS will launch with 5 consoles if they have to.

It's corresponding news like this that lends credulance to them having yield issues.

So they were bullshitting us when they said voice command localization was the reason that only 13 countries are getting the XBO this year? I'M STUNNED!

Could still be the reason, I think. Maybe they were just being too optimistic about how long it would take and now they realize they're father behind?

Well this is strange, so MS reduced the number of launch countries to 13 and of those only 5 will have access to voice commands, which MS has been touting as an integral part of the Xbone experience.

Nothing! I said nothing!
So, Microsoft has put up another page on Xbox.com promoting the Xbone as they do.

What's interesting is the small print right at the bottom, specifically point six:

Excuse me while I state the obvious, but I'm fairly sure that's not all of the 13 countries that the Xbone is launching in.

I think that's formal confirmation that Kinect localisation issues is not the reason why Microsoft delayed the console in eight countries a couple of weeks ago.

[Credit to limaCAT over on Something Awful for the find]

Didn't they explain it wasn't solely voice localisation but content etc as well? I am sure I saw that on here somewhere.

UK has so many accents in it too that it's seems daft not to have Ireland.

I mean just in a few mile radius around me I have Sand Dancers, Mackems and Geordies and voice recognition is always fun.

Because it divvent work man gownas hahaha. I dont exactly speak badly but fuck me kinect is worse than siri and the like at understanding i dont hold much hope in big improvements with this next one.

LOL so how come they're lauching in countries where voice commands won't be available at launch? :D
They cared so much about the experience being perfect and that was the only reason why the launch was delayed in certain countries....
They're just lying with no shame to cover all the issues they're having with this product.

Lolocalisation excuse indeed ^_^

I really enjoy MS sneeky way of slipping in these "disclaimers" on their policy changes.... like really?

So I guess the other 8 launch regions are, like, Tier 1.5 then?

Come on MS, this just keeps getting worse.

1. Down to 13 countries for launch
2. Down to 5 countries for voice integration

What next? Down to 3 countries that can use the controller?

But you are still forced to buy the damn thing. Even if you can't use it.

You know, because of reasons. Now hand over your 100$.

I know they said it won't happen but a Kinect-less SKU would fix this problem as well.

In fact I think a Kinect-less SKU would be a valid answer to at least half the problems they've had.

How can germany be on that list and austria not. It´s the same language...

You're assuming that there some sort of sense to this. There clearly isn't.

EDIT: In fact the only thing that makes sense is that there is indeed material shortages.

I live right on the border beside Northern Ireland... so it'll work there (I assume.. since it's the UK).. but 20 minutes outside of Northern Ireland to the Republic (where I live) and it won't. That seem's fairly strange.

There is also the explanation of software and services not being ready and legal questions still being unresolved following the removal of the original online plan for Xbox One.

Either way it's a strategic decision on whether you give people resources to answer those questions. If those problems existed in the United States or the United Kingdom there would be more urgency to solve those problems.

They do code some sort of accent support, I think, as I was told that pre-Kinect launch... and over time the 360 has definitely got better at recognizing what I'm saying through my Birmingham drawl.

There can only be one!

In the end only America will get Macleod support.

Good grief, did they not have anyone thinking about the difficulties of having voice commands seemingly the main USP until after E3 or something?

I would imagine if you set your store to Italy, Kinect voice commands will simply not work. Of course, you can get round that by setting the store to the UK or something, but it'll be a bit of a pain in the arse if you want to buy something from there, because of Pound Sterling.

You are probably right...btw, I'm not getting the Xbox in 2013, so it's not an actual problem for me

I didn't really use Kinect for 360. How was it with regional accents (like the North East of England for example), because my experience with voice commands are that regional accents can really mess stuff up.

That might explain why other english speaking countries are omitted.

Only launching in countries that we can get the voice localization done in ahead of time.

Launches in countries that they can't get the voice localization done in ahead of time.

Just wow.

And that confirms beyond any doubt that the localisation excuse was bollocks.

It makes sense. Non-Irish people have a hardtime understanding Irish accents much less Kinect.

Most Irish accents are pretty neutral, it's just select places that are the extreme. Perchance UK actually includes Ireland? Wouldn't be the first time

If my eventual dutch xbox somehow decides to not understand english, I will look around a bit and shake my head a few times before forgetting all about the camera device attached to my xbox.

This console is releasing too early. Their whole strategy is all of this integration stuff, meanwhile it is arguable less than 50% complete at this point.

Until a game like Halo comes out and has Kinect requirements. That is the end game people should expect with a Kinect in every box, is for developers to design gameplay mechanics around it.

I never owned a Kinect, but I have had to put on a fake American accent to deal with automated telephone systems in the US.

Anyone here do that to make Kinect work better on the 360?
