The game comes stock with a bunch of tutorial videos that go a long way in getting you to feel like a more effective team member. Beyond that, this is a game that is not hard to pick up, nor is it hard to really master. You just have to play startegically to the strengths of whichever class you play, and put a normal amount of time into the game.

Hit me up on steam if any of you want some help or just want a GAFer to play some matches with . I'll be on tonight and play usually at night around 8 pm PST. Steam name is Cystm.

Loving the laser parties and the tunnels now.

How does the new babblers work? I'm a bit confused. You build the egg and then you use the new attack to direct them where to attack? Do they follow you around forever?

You can use the attack to tell them either where to go and attack or who to stick onto and provide armour for.

I've found they can help a little gorgey survive a rifle + pistol combo which is nice and can sometimes prove to be a useful distraction in big battles where marines are spraying and praying.

Tunnels, while expensive, are damn awesome for Alien movement in the late game.

How the F am I supposed to kill an alien? They are so fast, and even when I am hitting them with my assault rifle they just get in my face and kill me in 3 slashes. Sometimes this one enemy turns into a blue cloud, floats across the hallway, kills my buddy, floats to me, kills me, and continues seemingly unpunished. Do I just have bad aim or what? And when to use the pistol vs rifle?

edit: just played aliens. how the f am I supposed to kill a marine? they have guns, and even when I bite them, they just take a few shots and I'm dead. Sometimes I bite forever and nothing seems to hit. Do I just need to get better at speed management or what?

Get used to anticipating movement when you're on marines I guess. I can do okay with marines but I find it near impossible to kill anything as a skulk lol

Yes! It is one of the deepest multiplayer experiences you can have today. The community is pretty great too.

i wish fades had acid rocket, gorge had webs, mc, dc, sc, and (more than 3 lol?) ocs, infact i wish it was just ns1 in hd.

co is fun but not as fun as it was in ns1, xenocide is practically worthless, if i get 3 rines im lucky, when i used to average at least 5 (and sometimes 8) per xeno. the only thing ns2 has over 1 is the graphics.

So true. The game just isn't as well made.

Just thought I would tell everyone with SLI set ups to DL the latest beta drivers from Nvidia. They fix a lot of the problems that the game has had with SLI.

Beta performance update has released which should ease a lot of CPU problems this game has. I recommend anyone who has had performance problems with this game to DL the beta patch on steam and give the game a test in a near full server. It should really help out.

This coupled with the impending D3D11 update should improve performance by quite a bit whilst offering positives for the future: better gfx and higher client server update rates.

I am now no longer going under 60fps... EVER. It is quite the accomplishment.

I wish ns1 wasn't dead. It just pisses me off they wasted 7 fucking years on an engine that imo isn't even as good as the modded goldsrc for ns1. Flayra had to have his hard on over infestation and just about everything else is crap in NS2. The alien comm, the nerfed gorge, the shit alien abilities, the shit jetpack, flamethrower, gl, and useless exos that throw as much shit on the screen as possible. I'd rather have hmg and HA thanks... No wonder he washed his hands on balance and basically appointed the mod maker making ns2 more like ns1 as the new balance guy.

Aside from the graphics of ns2, I can't think of 1 thing that it does better than ns1. The engine is wayyy to demanding for how it looks. The maps can't even be as large as ns1 map (really? really?), you can't even have functional elevators in maps because they glitch out and kill aliens. I don't play ns2 because its a good game I play it because its as close to ns1 as a game exists now.

I've never played NS1, what made is so much better? I'm genuinely curious btw, not trying to sound like an ass or anything :).

Also, I SUCK at NS2.. :(

Well the engine was better, or at least it felt better as it applied to movement, and map traversel. Sure it had bugs, but ns2 just feels "mushy" in a sense, not solid, sort of like battlefield 1942, if you ever played that. But ns1 was built on hl1, which was a quake engine, which was pretty dialed in control-wise by that stage. Also the spark engine doesn't do maps as big as goldsrc for some reason. And for how it looks, it takes a mean rig to run it. I guess its the lighting or something.

Also I hate the changes to the game. In NS1 on aliens the gorge built everything, being a gorge mean't something. In ns2 you basically spam bile when you get it, and annoy the marines. In ns1 you dropped hives, dropped chambers, had webs to slow down marines. Heck the aliens in general had better abilities imo in NS1. I miss primal scream, focus, devour, webs, acid rocket, scent of fear.

On the marines side the jetpack is pretty worthless (if you are remembering jetpacking around in ns1), And I would rather have heavy machine guns / heavy armor, than those exos. I guess a rail gun exo is fun in a quake sense but only in fighting not in movement.

Also it felt like the community was bigger/better than now. I don't have hard data on that but I played for years on g4b2s, voogru, 187combat, nsarmslab, badclan, servers. It just feels so small and....too late(?) when it comes to post release NS2. I think it was a mistake to take as long as they did. They didn't get what they wanted out of source, but I can't see this engine being much better, I mean I guess flayra got his dynamic infestation working better or whatever, but when it doesn't feel right "playing" the game, imo something is wrong.

I dunno if they had money troubles or what, but its kind've a shame that the kickstarter mania hit after they launched, They could have probably gotten some decent funding and had more time to polish things.

It's not a bad game, but as someone who loved ns1, I just feel like its not as good as the first. And since the community for the first is dead, this is as close as I can get to anything like that games style.

So this a no-buy? Your comments bum me out. It looks awesome but I don't want to waste my limited gaming time on a game that sounds as poor as the one your describe.

This game is fantastic. What NS2 does well is generate a deeper multiplayer experience than most any other game out there. They made a game that blends RTS/FPS better than anyone else, ever. NS2 is right up there with NS1.

There are balancing issues, but they have mostly been addressed, and they are continuing to improve the game that they clearly poured so much love and time into, so the problems at present are going to be addressed.

I really don't like anyone dissuading someone from buying this game based primarily on nostalgia.

It's a great game and should be given a shot, particularly when it's on sale.

i seriously think UWE is making this game more and more like ns1
the latest patch they make armories don't heal armors
before the last patch, the onos bar 32 man servers had a lot those skills you mention, gorge webs, heavy machine guns but since the latest patch the server admin quit the game so the server's gone (he mentioned the latest patch broke the mods)

I got this game on Steam Sale and it is amazing. So much fun to be the 'squaddies' in an RTS. So rewarding when my commander gives me a pat on the back for holding a base by all rights I should have lost. The challenge right now is the lack of commanders. So many noobs including myself right now. I hope to rectify that soon though and start commanding. I was a high plat starcraft player so I should do alright =/

Everyone has been invited to the steam group who asked!

Hope you guys are getting excited for the next large patch... Hell of a lot of stuff should be going in. Including a linux client!

Was gifted this game during the last Steam sale from a friend, who took the time to walk me through the basics. Can't imagine trying to figure out the game without someone to provide advice and feedback. Love playing it and actually enjoy watching casts of the game, the mix of RTS and FPS really works well. I like switching between the base game and the combat mod, mostly using that to practice my aim and also to get used to the alien lifeforms. Was easier to find games late at night during the sale, hopefully the game improves player retention with the next couple of patches.

If you like watching casts (or really if anyone likes watching casts) check out my list of places to watch competitive NS2 - I remember when I first started watching NS2 casts it was annoying because I didn't really know who was making them or where.

Thanks for the list! I've actually already seen some of your casts and also some of your tutorials. The casts are a really good way to learn how the game works on a macro level, which can be difficult when just playing as a marine/alien.

New 814mb patch. Reinforced pushed early?

edit: from forums
Hi everyone,

Ironhorse here. Thanks for noticing the B252 has gone live. For certain specific reasons, it was important to get this patch out as soon as possible to have the new renderer tested, and it ended up going live on Steam before we could give you guys any information. Our normal PR/community manager Hugh is very busy catching up making the changelog, however. The actual changelog is quite lengthy and we wanted to make sure we didn't miss anything. This will be posted very soon in a front page news post.

Having our valued users suddenly be unable to connect to servers and be generally confused after a patch update is not a customer experience we strive for. I appreciate your patience while we continue to improve. Meanwhile, some of the servers have already been updated and there are some great new features, including improvement that I think you guys will enjoy. As always, please let us know of any bugs in the tech support forums that you find and we will do our best to squash them!

Thanks,
Ironhorse
