So PS4 is now how much more powerful percentage wise?
Their architectures are sufficiently different that it's impossible to distill their "power" into a single number. And even if you could, that number could only be valid for one particular piece of software.

The PS4 seemed more powerful before MS made these changes, and it still seems more powerful afterwards. But you can't just add up FLOPs. Well, okay, you can, but that leaves out a bunch of other stuff.

Longer, more hand-wavy answer: Based on what we know, the XB1 now has a CPU that is about 9% "faster" than the (speculated) one in the PS4. Not a big jump, but better than a poke in the eye. The XB1 is also purported to have some audio co-processing that the PS4 may lack. That may on occasion free up another ~10% of the XB1's CPU for other uses. On the other hand, the XB1 (or PS4) may be reserving more of the CPU for apps. Or, maybe it's the opposite. Maybe it'll change over time. We just don't know.

On the GPU side of things, the PS4 started out with a big advantage, and The XB1 has only closed the gap marginally. The PS4 started with a 50% advantage in GPU FLOPS, and the XB1 closed that to 40%(?) with their earlier clock bump. Of course, that's just a vague theoretical scorecard based on a naive counting of the CUs and assumes that all else is the same. All else isn't the same, since both companies added their own tweaks to the GPU. But that hopefully gets us in the ballpark of reality.

Then there's the memory architecture. Totally different. The PS4 has much more bandwidth to its main memory. On the other hand, the XB1 has some on-chip memory that should be faster still, latency-wise. How do those two differences offset? No freaking idea. It might be another case where the XB1 is only able to close a gap slightly, or it might be that the XB1 will actually be faster at certain things. (Not all things, certainly, but maybe some important things.)

Shorter answer: The PS4 is probably still more powerful. Hard to say how much more.

I think you're probably reading a bit more into the motives of most people than is actually there. For most of us, it's a bit like calculating odds. CBOAT has a track record that amounts to something like 85% right-on-the-money, even going way back to the 360

snip

when he got basically everything right about that platform too. Microsoft so far has a track record something like 11% going by the amount of statements that were true about understand that other gamers must be the same way. It's nothing personal against Microsoft, I was skeptical as fuck about the PS3 after Sony did what they did and I didn't end up getting that platform for years due to that.

plus CBOAT notp aid 2post.

I don't think netBuff is capable of separating his disdain with Xbox One as a product from Albert Penello, who really doesn't deserve that ire. :/

Can you quote a post and then make a response that furthers the discussion, or do you just want to go LOLHIVEMINDGAF and trollpost the topic and leave?

I just read a bit of his post history, and I retract my claim of him being aggressive: From what I've read, he doesn't seem to converse in an aggressive manner.

That doesn't mean I'm interested in reading more of his posts in the future, but I'm willing to concede he's not being derisive to the community.

The longer you dodge this question, the more confident I am in rumors of yield issues.

Oy. On this one, as I said, it was up to the Marketing department. I always have to say this - I work on the engineering team under Whitten. The marketing team was working on getting that chart done and put on Xbox.com. I have nothing to do with it - nor any control over it, unfortunately.

Don't scare Albert away guys, he's just a guy doing his job. His demeanor has always been exemplary on here.

If MS wanted to make his life easier, all they had to do would be to require Live only for online MP (similar to PS+) and do not paywall off anything else. I would stop hating on the Xbox right then and there, and might even be open to buying one.
Or, better yet, make Gold into a a true value add and remove all multiplayer gaming from the paywall entirely, thus putting some pressure on Sony to do a 180 ;P

Eh? Am I right? Or am I right?

Hey, I can fucking dream can't I?

Sounds like the same kind of limbo that direct feed HD footage of DriveClub is stuck in. Why can't the engineers run everything?

I don't know how MS is going to make enough systems for launch when they've only started production now. IIRC, Xbox 360 production started in July of 2005, launched in fewer countries, and they still had multi-month shortages.

He said so himself, this was around E3. BEFORE Microsoft changed there approach towards Indies.

Sorry, my mistake on that. But still, it shouldn't detract from the point that while CBOAT has been wrong on showings at trade shows, he's never been wrong on specs or the hardware. Which is why we shouldn't drop it.

So PS4 is now how much more powerful percentage wise? Ad what's the Tflops total of both the XO and PS4?

Hope the PS4 gets a bump too. Every little helps!

fight that fight Nib ;)

at least you're transparent about what's important to you (despite your protests to the contrary)

I still think you are probably good people deep down even if you won't give albert a break. :)

I'll take it. One step at a time. Next time you're in Seattle, I'll buy you a beer. Then finally, marathon session of Star Wars (the arcade game) in my loft. Deal?

...Nice. Not many people would say what you just said. Respect.

This is why it is better to have a bigger console with bigger cooling (and an external power brick) versus cramming everything in a tight shell.

You do realise the PS4 is still a good degree more powerful than the Xbox One right? And much smaller. And $100 cheaper...

We also don't know the PS4's cpu speed.

Thanks.

Just so you're aware, this is the text on that page now:

Xbox voice commands will not be available in all markets on the product release date.

This still leaves me skeptical.

Of course. But my point still stands. I imagine Sony have less leeway with the PS4 (internal PSU, tighter design). Unless of course they have a very large fan in that system.

I'm glad you can admit that. Respect fist.

I really am disappointed with the Xbox One as well, don't get me wrong, I just think I really appreciate what Albert is trying to do. That doesn't mean I don't weigh every post with a healthy dose of skepticism, but it does mean I understand he's a genuine guy trying his hardest for a product he probably really has his heart into.

haha, yeah. plus that :p

Although I'm pretty sure Albert Penello does some of this on his own time. That's passion, yo.

Never promise us anything, Albert. We're like hordes of zombies, CHAAAAARTS, GIVE US CHAAAAARTS.

1.6 is the approximate from what we know. Obviously not official, of course.

It is true though, you'd think that Microsoft would be able to match Sony on one of those.

Price.
Size.
Power.

...All go to Sony. Even games, if you want to argue that. Kinda disappointing. :/

External power brick? Yuck. And taking lessons from Microsoft on cooling is like taking lessons about sex from watching transformers.

A trusted source who GETS THINGS WRONG. Albert says he is wrong, there is 0 evidence to say Albert is lying, there is more evidence he is telling the truth. Let it go.

Even the cleanest of buttocks are capable of producing the occasional turd.

Lol at trying to start a console war with Albert. Console warriors will continue to be on the front lines no matter who gets in front of them. He's a good guy, his posts have been very informative.

Now I feel terrible (but don't worry, you won't have to fear me actually taking you up on that offer :p)

I can at least appreciate your effort in informing people in a more direct manner than PR releases or even Twitter posts (140 characters are rarely enough), even though I'm not the biggest fan of the product you're working on. Consider yourself collateral damage in the console wars ;)

Albert Penello I salute your reserve in the face of the GAF consumer. The amount of FUD from people emotionally invested in a product is crazy this generation. I appreciate you at least taking the time to answer questions.

A large fan is a dead cert. Larger fan equals better cooling and slower rpm (less noise). Wouldn't be surprised if they have a huge heat sink and heat pipes in there either.

He guys, checking back into to see if this this thread is going smoother than the last few and not breaking out into petty arguments...
