Dual Shock 4 lightbar can't be turned off

I'm pretty sure ANY consumer camera can "see" more than humans.
Well, I said 'reliably' because if that camera could do so, there wouldn't be any need for a brightly colored shape to track.

Not sure why people say that, it also sucks on LCD (I don't have plasma to compare though).
Plasmas tend to have super-glossy screen finishes that aren't quite as common on LCD displays, for whatever reason.

Damn son, who pissed in your cereal? It isn't an issue because it is NOT THE BASIC CONTROLLLER.

What is wrong with you? Calm down. My point was: they have had a controller with light for years. Someone, somewhere, should have complained about it. I'm not trying to say this is not an issue. What I'm saying is that I don't understand how they didn't notice this before.

Hardware? No. Firmware.

Yes, which is part of the hardware I will be using. So yes, it is fixable with software, but the problem is still a part of the console.

Well why didn't you post that before?! Sorry for going off. :)

The people saying "how close do you play to your tv?", have you never enjoyed a horror game in the middle of the night in pitch black? That being said, I wonder if this is patchable or changes by launch. Also, more color permutations would be pretty sweet.

Funny part is.. if it was MS that did this GAF would lose their shit.

It's fucking dumb, the is no other way to slice it.

And tape on an accessory of my $400 hardware isn't a solution.

I don't want it up to developers. I want it up to me.

Here's hoping it get fixed

The whole lightbar crap should've honestly been cut when they made the decision to not bundle in the PS Eye. It's a vestigial feature will have no major use in most games, other than annoy the shit out of you.

Totally agree with this part. Pretty baffling how something so simple hasn't been addressed yet.

I completely agree. I think it's only a matter of time until they release a controller with out it.

That's an even more asinine solution then the problem ever could be...

That would then mean that anyone who DID want the camera would then go have to buy DIFFERENT controllers with the light bar just to be compatible...absolutely dumb

But why can't camera track shape colored using bright ultra-violet/infra-red light?

PS
Kinect in IR googles:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7nRKU0nFxA

MS' Kinect tech, in both the original and next-gen one, are fully capable of seeing and tracking reliably in complete darkness. Sony's camera tech isn't even on the same level since it's just an HD camera with Sony's software. At best, it will use tried and true video-based feature tracking, which is something also on Kinect's list of capabilities since it also has an HD camera in addition to its near-IR and fully-IR sensor tracking. If what you're saying is possible on Sony's camera, why are they insisting upon something so conspicuous and meant to be seen visually? The answer is that the camera Sony is selling you and the software it uses for its computer vision is limited as fuck and barely better than anything you can do with a camera on a phone or tablet.

No, you just buy a playstation move. :p It's not an asinine solution at all because this stupid shit won't garner much support considering the camera isn't bundled, like I said. Right now the lightbar's existence makes little to no sense. EVEN if the camera was bundled in I see little purpose for motion garbage with a dual shock. It has sixaxis crap in there already(and sixaxis use was unequivocally shit every time it was used). I really don't see the point.

Uhh god why, for a company that is lauded as getting so many things right (or not wrong lol, depending on persepctive), this is SUCH a stupid thing to get wrong. My plasma screens glass panel is what worries me most, espeically for night time gaming.

How is it that some of you guys can look at the kinect and get angry touting that it's a useless feature, even though it ads gameplay mechanics and simplifies navigating the UI, but shrug off this always on light that has zero functionality when not paired with a playstation eye that's not included?

dude... your first sentence was "Because nobody bought move? "

he just corrected you on that.

We've moved on. And I would have thought that somebody clever enough to hammer on a keyboard would recognise hyperbole for the sake of humour when they see it. Guess not.

Did you really just revive a 2 month old thread for that?

I was expecting some news on how you can turn it off on the OS level or something.

This thread should be on the front page until Sony gets the point. It was pretty stupid to put a large lightbar on the top of their new controller and not think it was gonna be a problem. This is common sense shit we're talking about here, and for some reason they don't get it.

Why didn't anyone complain about this when they released Move?

Because the vast majority of Move games were bright and colorful. Sports Champions for example.

This is quite simple. When the TV is displaying bright content it's not going to be possible to notice a bright light on your controller being reflected. But playing a dark game? Yes, that's when this is gonna be a problem.

For example, while playing a The Last of Us, a very dark game, I literally noticed the tiny LED light on my dual shock 3 from time to time. The light on the top of the dual shock 4 is massive in comparison. For people with reflective TVs, playing a dark game with the dual shock 4 is gonna be a nightmare.

Funny part is.. if it was MS that did this GAF would lose their shit.

It is an asinine solution...the proper solution is to allow the light bar to be turned off...it's just dumb for Sony to manufacture different DS4's with light bars and without...

At the end of the day this will however be a non-issue for 90+% of gamers....other than those that have been suffering from seared retinas for this entire generation caused by the DS3's number lights, or the 360's green ring...

Well for starters this doesn't make the PS4 cost $100 more, and second we haven't seen how much of an impact this will have in a home environment.
Also the benefits you tout for Kinect are highly subjective.

why is there always the need for the junior-remark in beginning of such sentences?
like full members don't pull shit.

Not to mention doing it can get you junior'd. On the topic of this light I notice it on my screen with the move controller but it's not super annoying, only a little annoying. An on/off toggle would be the best approach for everybody.

Because at least you don't have to pay an extra 100 bucks for a mandatory gadget you have zero interest in.

Could you point out which posters are doing that?

So is this what constitutes a major issue on PS4? Oh boy, if this is the worst of it, then this machine is gonna be amazeballs! :D

Seriously though, it would be nice if they included dimming options or the ability to switch it off if it's such a sticking point for some people.

Odd. You were saying it wasn't a big deal if it didn't affect battery life on the first page of the thread.

so a lot of you play at a parallel level to your TV? Do you hold the controller up at eye-level?

I recommend mounting that TV up a bit. It'll solve this 'horrific' light bar problem... and it's probably better for your eyes, too. ;)

I've posed a link to the video, that shows that "complete darkness" is illuminated by IR light emitted by kinect, in my previous post.

Dude, consumer cameras don't "see" IR light, because they have A FILTER that blocks it. There is nothing "high tech" about camera's "seeing IR light" whatsoever.

It was never going to cost you an extra $100 because you were probably never going to buy an XOne in the first place. Everyone that has one preordered is obviously happy with the included kinect. The added price point is not a metric for rediculousness in this. The light on the controller has 100% zero functionality out of the box because there is no camera included. It should be able to be turned off. Hellc you can even turn off the kinect.

So everybody buying a Xbone wants Kinect?

My TV sits exactly where a TV should sit. Eye level while I'm sitting on my couch. So yes, I would notice the light on the dual shock 4 immediately upon booting up the system.

I've even noticed the tiny dual shock 3 light before.

There is something high tech about a camera that actually tracks IR, as Kinect does and is partly based around. Any camera seeing it isn't a problem, but tracking it through software is for any normal camera, including Sony's camera. If it wasn't, they would never bother with forcing a bright shape to be tracked in the first place. Do you get it? The fact that Sony does it the way they do means that their camera cannot reliably track what you're talking about while MS' camera is, in fact, built around tracking IR.

LOL, okay.

Nobody is going to spend $500 on an XOne and not hook up the kinect. That's like a single person throwing out the backseat of their car because they don't anticipate anyone using it. It has a use, and I bet even the most staunch opposers will be using the kinect. It's the whole package; you want an Xbox one, you indirectly want a kinect.
