Jeremy Conrad (former IGN): BF4 and CoD: Ghosts are 720p on Xbone

If I had to compare both consoles performance/hardware wise, it feels like this would be the equivalent of the Dreamcast(Xbone) vs. PS2 or even the orignal Xbox(PS4). The Dreamcast had terrific looking games, but it didn't have the power the PS2 had, and it would show once the PS2 finally got great games.

That's a huge gap.

Contractual obligation from who?

Lol

Adam clearly stated it for ps4. so Albert is contractually obligated by himself to shut up and tell people 720p upscale to 1080p is same as native

Microsoft can't say anything about CoD that could potentially hurt its sales, Albert could have kept his mouth shut from the beginning and it would've been perfectly understandable.

Lmao.

Poor Microsoft. They really should have ditched the camera and spent that extra $100 on putting in a way beefier GPU. Xbone with a 7970/GTX 680 level GPU (or hell, even 7950/760 with some extra clocks to speed them up) would've made them the higher end console and gotten rid of all these 'not enough power gotta do 720-900p' fiascos that are burning them.

A shame, really... their obsession with Kinect burned them on the technical front.

This has really become an I told you so situation, as many here on GAF have been saying this for ages. Occam's Razor and all that jazz...

I can kind of understand Battlefield running at 720p due to all of the shit going on in that game, but there is no excuse for Ghosts to be running at that resolution. Microsoft doesn't seem confident at all with reviews either with the late embargo. They are really trying to keep all of this shit under wraps until the very last minute.

I have both consoles pre-ordered, but now I'm thinking about cancelling my Xbox pre-order and just going with PS4 at launch.

If this is, indeed, true, then Obama should direct the government to assume immediate control of Microsoft's EDD as a preemptive measure to stabilize world markets and Obama should further instruct Congress to immediately suspend all military and economic aid to Japan until such a time as Japan unilaterally renounces its "PS4" program.

This is sad news for anyone not buying a PS4. The difference between 720p and 1080p should easily be distinguishable, especially as larger TV's get cheaper.

Yea, for the people who notice or care. Framerate is more important, and more noticeable.

For the record, I consider the PS4 the best value buck for buck as far as next-gen consoles go. I do think it is sad MS cheaped out on hardware to upgrade Kinect. This wouldn't be a problem if they weren't bundling it in, but it's a marathon not a sprint-- maybe it'll work for them in the long run.

Very surprised at ghosts. What the hell are they doing with that engine oO

I'm going to say PS4 development is much easier, every third party developer or publisher is rushing to the finish line this fall for next gen ports. With rushed schedules it seems most third party games are noticeably better or more optimized for the PS4 then current gen console.

The Xbone is weaker but it should still be able to handle cross gen games at 1080p and a framerate better than 30fps. When rushed it seems much more challenging to squeeze performance and other juices out of the Xbone.

What!?

So that is the "stupid" reason that Gies was talking about, in regards to embargo on Xbone reviews? Is that not something consumers should know? And him being a game journalist, should provide that information to consumers?

He said that reviews of PS4 games are coming in the next couple of weeks and no Xbox One reviews are coming because of a "stupid reason". The stupid reason is that for Xbox One, the embargo is on 12th of november and not that the resolution of CoD and BF4 is 720p (although, that embargo date might have something to do with these resolutions, don't know).

I agree. But then again, what the hell do I know.

The bigger problem though, why the hell are none of the gaming journalists ("journalists"?) reporting on this? Someone has to know something? What are they afraid of? This has to be of public interest, and the fact that big corporations wants to keep it secret can't possibly be a good reason not to write about it? FFS, that is in and of itself a reason to write about it!

People are spending money on this crap. They should be allowed to make an informed decision.

I found that so weird too. When famousmortimer run the rumor about DriveClub been delayed, several sites reported on it, way before it was officially announced and still was a rumor. But this; it has been days and i don't think i saw one single website made a mention about it.

For 500 bucks you expect 1080p, at least I do. The main purpose of these consoles is putting out the best possible graphics (controller and so on is remaining roughly the same). But it's obvious MS spent a lot of that money on Kinect and NFL deals.

These tweets are just baiting though, isn't this all old news?

I permanently banned my 6 year old daughter from using the PS4 for mistakenly sending grief reports as it's too hard to watch or talk to her
Worse than I thought.

Although Call of Duty at 720p says more about Infinity Ward than it does about the new Xbox. Shameful.

Pulls the "Lazy Devs" card without actually saying it, niiiiice.

Resorting to the "Lazy Devs" defense is just about as low and intellectually bankrupt as you can get.

The Xbox brand has always been associated with powerful consoles, or "the most" powerful consoles. It was true with the original Xbox and Microsoft execs made the claim several times in the early days of the current generation.

For the Xbox brand to lose this attribute that it so integral to its identity, well... that does not bode well.

Seriously, don't we look like fools overreacting to this?

Yes, you can make that argument. My counter point? It is 2013. The Playstation 3 and Xbox360 both output most games at 720p. And now here we are, on a verge of the next generation, and one of the consoles is still stuck in the past.

It's quite the big deal if you ask me.

I really want to know the res of the PS4-version (BF4) now. Still not convinced that it's over 720p, but I really hope so.

The hardware setup for the console itself likely has nothing to do with Kinect (at least, not directly) - it's more likely MS taking the safe route to guarantee 8GB of memory early on in the console's development which lead them to the comparative GPU deficiency (Need 8GB early -> use DDR3 -> need fast cache to alleviate bandwidth constraints -> on-die ESRAM -> less space for bigger GPU -> ultimately weaker system compared to PS4)

Pretty sure without Kinect Camera they could have had the funds to drop in the 79xx/67x class gpu pretty easily. Remember that GTX 670s with lower clockspeeds go into gaming laptops. That's right, the mobile version is the same card, just smaller and downclocked.

This wasn't a space issue. This was MS choosing to spend money on Kinect camera and bundling it in, thus the $500 price point. If anything, they could've just used a 3 GB GDDR5 setup for the GPU and 4-8 GB DDR3 for the system. Yes it isn't as flexible as pooled memory but its a helluva lot faster than being held back by ESRAM.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but from the start I believe MS could have had the most powerful console and still been competitive at the higher price point. But by choosing to bundle in Kinect 2.0, I think they've shot themselves in the foot. After how forward looking and powerful Xbox and 360 were, I am disappointed to say the least

must admit it's made me think too but then I realised if res was an issue i'd stick to my pc so i'm going for the games.

but if it#s a big issue for people on a big telly I can see the concern.
