DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

You guys can change the brightness and contrast on your TVs at home if you want.

DF kept the game at default values for the test, but detail how the Xbox version is tuned for a higher contrast image.

Thats the "pop" and vibrancy you're seeing.

Is it just me or do they both look good for new hardware?
Do people always take this stuff to the next level?

Alright, I just "corrected" the levels of the PS4 side to match the X1 side closer. All I did was crush the black and white levels. I did *not* touch the colors at all. Notice the SSAO on the PS4 version around the hand.

It's unfortunate that the captures are so different, making comparisons difficult.

It seems the XO's textures has higher contrast and are sharpened to make up for the lower resolution. While people are saying the XO version is better looking, the PS4 version's look is actually closer to the PC version, with a softer image quality.

Yeah it seems they've done the simple thing to make it look good to the general public. The same general public that thinks the TVs set up at the store with the retina burning backlight, 9300k color temp, and maxed out contrast and sharpness looks good instead of reference, ISF calibration settings.

I mean look at the gun any time the player walks into a shadow, you can see absolutely no detail on the gun except for its outline on the XO. On the PS4, the gun retains all of its detail on the gun's side, barrel, etc.

Dude, X1 looks better here. Less blurry and better texture (the ground for instance). Or it could be the gamma settings, not sure.
It could be different when seeing the game in motion but considering the resolution advantage of the PS4 it is actually very disappointing.

Yep, I think its just a gamma/contrast difference.
But like I said, if you look at the grass and at the cable and builinds behind in the scene, you can see the pixels.

But I do agree that I was expecting bigger difference.

...ok...color me confused. They say the PS4 has a higher resolution of 900p, while the Xbox One is barely at 720p..but judging by those images, I have to say the Xbox One's pics has more vibrant color and shaper image. Am I the only one seeing this?

I'm with you on it - but we must be quiet, lest we be crucified!

So people now love post processing sharpening filters? That is not what the textures are supposed to look like, you can do that crap on any TV and any image viewing program.

Fact: The PS4 for version looks objectively better.
Just because the XB1 has black crush does not mean it looks better!

You are confusing the increased contrast with higher res textures and that really destroys your credibility. XBO shouldn't be outputting such a high contrast image, anyway. It should be neutral so that you can adjust it to your liking on your tv or in settings. So much detail is lost in the shadows.
Guy, you've posted these links three times now and I'm telling you they don't work. It says no hotlinking.

Xbox has Instagram filter to blow the contrast up and PS4 looks like Vaseline is being applied with that scaling. PC version will look even better after the mantle update.

So Sony fucked up the scaler again? Or did DF somehow mess up when encoding the video?

Because the PS4 footage is blurry as hell. It's PS3 vs 360 all over again.

EDIT:

Hmm, I suppose Xbone could be doing some sharpening?

Xbone looks "good" like over compressed music sounds "good". It looks abrasive and there's an obvious loss of details.

Honestly the Xbox one version looks better, the textures are a lot more detailed. If you look at the middle portion of both images you can see the details on the ground through the dust on the Xbox side but not ps4.

XBO looks sharper than the PS4 version. The picture comparisons with the tattoo on the back of the bald guy's head really show the difference. Going simply by these screenshots, the PS4 looks blurry whereas the XBO is sharper and I notice more detail.

Agreed. Noticed it right away with the scaffolding near the closest building. Also, looking at the rock outcropping on the far left of each picture, it looks noticeable blurred on the PS4 compared to the XBO. Overall, pretty much every screenshot comparison I see, the XBO looks much better.

No, you are not. The discussions are getting out of hand with people arguing. The facts are: PS4 is running at a higher resolution, but for whatever reason, their post-processing AA is a bit more aggressive resulting in a softer image. Hence, the Xbox One's looks a bit more crisp.

The vibrant color is due to the way DF does their comparisons. They set the gamma levels equally across both consoles: the PS3 was also naturally brighter than the 360, but this is something of a moot point as this setting as well as brightness/contrast can be fine tuned on the user end. I never understood the gamma arguments on DF.

Protip: The Xbox One version of the game is intentionally botching accurate colors and image reproduction in favor of over sharpening and oversaturation.

If the end result is the game looking as good or better than the PS4 version then does it matter how they are doing it?

The colors pop more in the XO version that's pretty much what I have seen so far. I don't know if the colors were purposely put that high on that version but I guess that's the advantage of having a smaller resolution.

I am confused, I thought the PS4 was 50% stronger? how is this even possible?? I'm seriously disap-fucking-pointed. I feel deflated by how bad the PS4 version looks in comparison. It's like PS3vs360 version washed look again.

hahaha omg i was thinking the same thing lol

Kinda bummed that the anti aliasing technique on PS4 blurs things a bit. Wonder why the went with that option.

Regardless, I'm happy the game appears to have turned out well on both platforms.
