DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

FFS, the XB1 version doesn't have "more detail" it has a nasty sharpening filter which actually adds noise. The PS4 and PC versions look much smoother and don't have crushed black levels.

The XO looks really dark, it's lost a lot of detail in the process. Jaggies are very noticeable as well. PS4 is washed out almost as if it's in the wrong RGB setting or something. I'm watching on a 42" TV and I have to say I disagree on the XO being better, it's over saturated and you can't see anything because it's too freaking dark. PS4 would probably be my choice, if I ever get this game(doubtful.)

Oh yeah, shit on gaf to justify your ignorance, right on buddy.

Jesus dude. Chill out. I'm not even buying an XBO. I'm getting a PS4 with BF4.

But I still give slight advantage to the XBO based on many of these side-by-side comparisons.

Does that mean the PS4 has inferior resolution / FPS? Nope - never said that. But based solely on the images alone, I'm leaning toward XBO's version.

So take a deep breathe.

What those videos prove to me is that resolution is not necessarily king. If the X1 can nearly achieve visual parity with the PS4 at a substantially lower resolution, imagine how the PS4 version could look if they downgraded the resolution and turned on more bells and whistles?

Ugh Black Crush has to be one of the worst things. I hope that it doesn't become a major problem in the next gen my TV is already not well equipped to handle it.

PS4 is clearly the winner on the technical front...

- as for the colors...there is a difference between proper colors, and oversaturated colors...The Xbone has some ATROCIOUS black crush where you literally lose ALL detail...to go along with its seemingly more saturated colors...i think the PS4 could use a little more saturation, while the Xbone certainly needs less...

the human eye is naturally pleased by bright, saturated colors...however they are not proper representations..

- the aliasing is exponentionally better on the PS4 version due to its higher resolution

- textures are the same, however the Xbone def has some sort of filtering going on through the scaler that does a great job of bringing out some serious pop in the textures that you dont even see in the PC version...

PS4 is clearly better from the article, but at the same time I am happy that the Xbox one looks just fine although the jaggies are apparent. We were told BF4 was 900p on PS4 btw, so I don't know why people are bringing that up.

The PS4 mutiplayer videos look good. I am so conflicted on getting it either on the PS4 or on my laptop (which can run the game at high settings around 45fps).

Yep. Resolution matters.

For those who say they can't tell the difference between native 720p and 1080p, look at this comparison.

FFS, the XB1 version doesn't have "more detail" it has a nasty sharpening filter which actually adds noise. The PS4 and PC versions look much smoother and don't have crushed black levels.
Reminds me of those floodlights in JJ Abrams movies to add that production value effect ;P

I don't know what the Xbone is doing to the textures, but it really doesn't look all that good. It's like contrast and sharpening post-process filters are getting applied or something.

It's like they ran it through an instagram filter. Which, now that I think about it, was a good idea because people love their instagram filters.

For a 720p game upscaled to 1080p it doesn't look that bad at all. It's definitely not the deal breaker I thought before this.

Contrast settings are not the same on both videos. That said, PS4 clearly has greater resolution, evidenced by the increased aliasing in the Xbone version. The Xbone side definitely looks sharper, but that's obviously down to increased contrast, as assets look to be the same. Any particular reason the PS4 was captured so washed-out? PEACE.

Because it is. DF found the same. Sony has better effects and better aliasing in their game and they wouldn't have lost the visual comparison if they put a half decent scaler into their box.

You mean into the dev kits that DF used for their reviews?

And am I the only one more interested in why the X1 network didn't work, but the PS4 did? Even with the issues that the reviewers had, at least on the PS4 it worked?

Just a quick thought before I go to bed.

I've only looked at the pictures, and obviously PC looks the best but I have to say, the XBO version doesn't look like the stuff of nightmares. Like some of the other posters said the system seems to be doing some sort of chroma contrast and might just have different saturation levels than the PS4, but I find that a bit hard to believe. Did they use the same television for both systems? Same picture mode, brightness/contrast/saturation settings for both?

I'm thinking they did, b/c while there are a few instances I think the XBO shots have a stronger impact due to the saturation, the PS4 version looks a lot closer to the PC build not just in textures but in chroma and brightness. It just looks more appropriate for a game set in the middle of a dirty war. And the AA work on that version is much better.

Btw were all the PS4 shots taken in MP and XBO in SP? If so that really says a lot more about the power difference than some probably think.

So the real news here is that I should just stick to playing games on the PC for a while.

Yep. And buy consoles for exclusives. But it's almost always that way. If you're just a console gamer, it's clear which version to go with (the one on the console you own).

Even with the resolution difference, it's looking pretty damn marginal when all is said and done. Both have different strengths and weaknesses. Performance will probably get better for both after day one OS patching and game patching.

Alright, I just "corrected" the levels of the PS4 side to match the X1 side closer. All I did was crush the black and white levels. I did *not* touch the colors at all. Notice the SSAO on the PS4 version around the hand.

It's unfortunate that the captures are so different, making comparisons difficult.
Thank you!

It's actually a really brilliant move on MS's part, as it is obvious in this thread that people fall for the over sharpening and oversaturation. If people want that look on the PS4 version, they can use their TV settings.

"Ding, ding, ding."

Tv calibration, folks. You too can have over sharpened details everywhere, like the Xbox One shots.

This thread is going places.....up and down up and down up and down...PS4 looks better Xbox One looks better PS4 looks better Xbox One looks better. LOL

I personally think the Xbox One looks better, crisper and better textures as others have indicated. Crazy!
