DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

can someone get a decent grab of the PS4 version and apply some post process sharpenign to it? Then maybe those downplaying it will really like it.

it is odd though - why would DICE sharpen the Xbox version and not the PS4 version? And why didn't DF take them to task for artificially sharpening the output? If you keep the output neutral, the user can choose to add sharpening on their TV. but if you sharpen in-engine, people can't choose to unsharpen it.

edit: is is fun though - the differences in rendering (sharpening, AA) cloud the discussion just enough so that anyone can spin their preference how they like. Seems like we'll need to wait for the next comparison to hope for a fair apples:apples comparison

So you are laughing at me for calling you out for getting upset at people that dare to use some logic in this comparison......... right.

I somehow doubt you where even close to "rational" and "clam" when you started talking about "salt" and talking about people "cry"ing.
I don't think you know what the word "upset" actually means.

Of course I wasn't rational or calm. I was laughing at the extreme reactions in this thread, including your AMAZING response to me.

This feels like one of those things that i don't really notice.

Before i spotted which one was which i originally thought the XO version was the PS4 one because it looked better.

They all look great to me, i just can't wait to play it.

So the blurry PS4 stuff I'm seeing doesn't exist does it? Ok.
Pretty sure many people here in the thread have already explained why the PS4 version is blurry (upscale etc) so why should I ignore that?

so youre saying all of the gentlemen that wrote these reviews are liars?...why should you ignore the words of the people that were actually THERE and PLAYING the game?

In X360 ANA chip was the upscaler, and a very good one. XB1 must have an improved version of this ( as they made with SHAPE and the sound chip ). ANA was not from AMD. The problem may be that Sony bought whatever upscaler AMD had at hand...
Ana wasn't the upscaler on the 360. MS used it in order to "show" the upscaling chip that Sony lacked for PR, but it was later revealed by ATI that the dedicated hardware was actually built into Xenos. Both use ATI/AMD gpu's and likely use the same scaling hardware this time.

So learning about the tech behind it destroyed your enjoyment? If you initially thought more saturation and crushed blacks look better, you shouldn't trick yourself into not liking it on principle. It happened also for me, when I started learning playing guitar - As soon as I noticed that Green Day only used cheap-ass powerchords I started hating on them.

Nah, learning about it made me appreciate that images don't have to be HDR-esque to be accurate to what I'm supposed to be seeing. I do enjoy blasting my gamma on occasion, but only for certain games (BF3 is one of them).

Amazing screen from the IGN footage:

LOLOL

I swear that looks like every CoD on my 360 (and PS3) in single player, and maybe even multiplayer

Granted the game will have better moments than that.

I still say we should wait for Multiplayer comparisons.

While I agree that the PS4 looks better than the Xbone in some places (and vice versa), who cares about the SP anyway?

From what I've seen in the JackFrag uploads, the MP looks amazing on PS4.

I believe, the Digital Foundry images and video seem to have been captured with limited RGB colour depth, which increases the contrast. Some sort of sharpening seems to also have been applied during the capture process(?)

It's similar to why when you go to a store all the TVs are set to like maximum contrast and sharpness.

That doesn't mean that there won't be blur in the PS4 version, it's 900p being upscaled with FXAA as noted above.

Apparently it has to do with scaled used by Sony to get the image to 1080P. MS is good, Sony's is poor causing a blurring of texture detail. At least that's what the DF examination claimed to find.

As is their right.

Absolutely. I don't judge them at all. It just baffles me that when they watch stuff on my tv (with settings that are not that good either to be honest), they always marvel at the amount of details they discover in stuff they already know. "All I usually see there is a black area" is a sentence I've often heard.

They also complain a lot about edges haloing, when they could easily correct this on their display.

But that's not the point. The real point is, as has often been repeated, the PS4 is showing significant performance power over XBone. What it means now is a drop in the ocean compared to what it will mean each year down the line.

So you were laughing at my response to you before I even posted it?

And using insults against people like "salt" and "Delicious tears" in light of the facts does look like you being upset to me.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
If its taking this much effort to highlight differences, I don't think ill be caring much.

And I'm an "enthusiast".

Average Joe current gen gamer coming from last gen CoD and BF3 that look like the turds they do will not be whining about baggies when they fireup this game.

On your TV, the difference in aliasing due to 720p vs. 900p native res will be pretty apparent.

When I turn up the gamma for the SUPER BRIGHT HDR effect in BF3 I often find myself getting shot at from areas of black, especially in OP Metro. Until I spot them anyway, then they become bright orange triangles.

In terms of framerate its basically a wash to me.The player being in different position probably accounts for a lot of the difference ,Dice did really well in the 60fps claim area. The aliasing in the XBO is quite a bit more noticeable but the texture clarity in quite a few spots is surprisingly better looking to me.

High and low contrast, this is something you can do on your TV with every game you own.

design-contrast_examples.gif

Most of Digital Foundry footage has this difference, the IGN stuff does not.

As for which is better, its really up to the user to decide and set their TV or monitor accordingly. High contrast means that every color is on "steroids" ie. red is more red, yellow is more yellow, black is more black. If you look at the Xbox One DF shots everything is in high contrast

Good God, so DF messed with the pics? Is this why the blacks are so dark in the X1 version and PS4 version looks so blurry? Jesus Christ why don't we have a better comparison site ffs, this is multibillion dollar industry and all we have for comparisons are these charlatans.

so youre saying all of the gentlemen that wrote these reviews are liars?
*sigh*
Okay, so let's ignore the upscaling/post-processing on the PS4 which is causing blurriness and just state that the differences are wholly down to the Xbone version being sharpened and crushed up to 200%. Because that would be an objective observation.

Yeah, i edited after googling a little. It was ATI AVIVO display engine, probably first version of it. So, now they should have the same upscaler.

People defending the XBone pics are a disgrace for all hardcore gamers. Stop gaming and look for a hobby that demands less eyesight.

So because you are "hardcore" it makes you a better person than a causal player? What is it with "Hardcore" gamers that makes them feel so entitled....idk i don't get it. Are you doing ok in real life? Do you need to talk?

The PC gaming community does all of the above with free mods, many people prefer the overdone effects.

A good litmus test would be asking people if they prefer the overblown colors and contrast of SAMOLED panels over the color calibrated IPS LCDs that Apple uses. The answer might surprise you.

until you showed them a picture of their mother/spouse/self on said tv, then they would notice it's all kinds of fucked.
Lack of a frame of reference or bad eyesight are the only explenations I can think of for someone liking sharpening or oversaturated colors or high contrast (noone can like black crush ,it's impossible, you either have detail in a dark area or shadow, or you have an even black blotch with all the detail missing, this one is NOT up for debate or preference or opinion)
