Phil Spencer On Gears of War's Future.

Huge Gears fan when I was younger, pretty nostalgic thinking about it now. However the series grew stale. I fell in love with Gears 1 and put countless hours into the multiplayer. Same with Gears 2 however it didn't give me the same feeling as the first. With all of the features they added into Gears 3 you think it would bring something fresh to the series but it did not deliver. I was so hyped for the game that even while I was playing it, I'd try and tell myself that it was a good game, but it sadly wasn't.

I stopped playing after a while. Didn't even play Judgement but didn't hear great things. I just wish Epic could make me feel like I felt playing the first. Outstanding game.

At the latest I'm thinking end of the generation. Epic are busy and MS will be focussing on thier new studios.

Still too popular to just skip over it. IMO. If MS wants to draw some of their 360 crowd to the Xbone, they'll attempt to keep the series going in some way.

Just make an online only Gears game for X1. Take the control scheme from Judgment and add all the classic game modes and every map from the first 3 games. Update the visuals and run it at 1080p 60fps and I'm in.

I love the Gears series, but trying to make another single player campaign will be a waste of time and make absolutely no sense.

The horde mode in Gears 3 was amazing. One of my favourite co-op modes this gen.

They better not fuck it up in Gears 4.

Phil is half right, Gears really had run its course and that became painfully apparent when fatigue stepping in during Gears 3, and the nail hit the coffin in Gears Judgment.

But Phil is also half wrong. I play games for gameplay, not story. So I couldn't give a shit about story arc etc, just give me some fresh gameplay based on Gears' roots and some fresh environments and we're all set.

Eh, I think they should let the series be for a while. Like he said, it has ran its course on the 360. I'd prefer it if they brought back a different series. Something like MechAssault or a Brute Force reboot.
don't judge me :p

Gears is like the Sonic of the "shooter" genre. It has a handful of tricks (streamlined cover system, creative executions) but not much else going for it. It'll take a genius, inventive reboot to make Gears awesome again.

I love his response about Gears. I think it has runs it course and really doesn't have many places to go. I loved the Gears series but I wish series like this that run their course don't keep coming back. We have enough franchises that do this.

Just release Gears 3 multiplayer at 60fps f2p and sell the skins to make money. I will order xbox now.

I've been saying for years that MS should release a f2p shooter that can be played gold or silver. I want them to re-skin Shadowrun as an ad supported f2p shooter. Just take Shadowrun, re-skin, put ads where ever they can outside of the death matches and put in death matches in sensible places.

I kind of agree with him: if they reboot it, they should make it gritty and dark again. All those people who screamed "we want color!!" and Epic listening to this crowd kinda ruined the visual identity of the IP for me. And then they added contrived shit like the Lambent, the queen and such.

That is why the first one ist still the best in the series (well, among other reasons).

That said, at this point I'm just sick and tired of Gears-style cover gameplay.

"I think that franchise would need to be… not be reworked but think about how to expand that universe and what people are doing. Maybe make it more gritty, I don't know. You'd want to do something with it, because I think it ran its course on 360. And it was a great success on the 360, but it doesn't quite have the story arc of a thing like Halo or something, at least the way it's played out in the games."
That's weird because every Halo game I've tried bored the piss out of me, but I've replayed every single Gears game several times.

Given that Gears of War was like *the* showpiece of the 360's power for me (for its time), I would love to see what they could do with the Xbone or PS4. If there's one thing Epic has, it's extraordinarily talented artists.

How about an online only/horde only version? Maybe just expand on that?

Also what's with the Gears3 hate? That's the best one mp wise. Fucking flawless

Gears 3 is my favourite game of the generation I think, I loved Judgment for what it was as well.

I don't see why they can't do a Pendulum Wars game but I doubt they will but im on-board for whatever direction they decide to take the franchise.

Would also love a Halo Wars type RTS spin-off.

...and more brown!

.....more grey, too!

though Gears 3 added some much needed sunlight/color
Yeah, while we're at it ... the Fallout games also should look like a rainbow of colors!. That would make them so much better!

Seriously, people don't realize it but adding more and more color with each sequel was a mistake.

I just want more Gears 3 horde. I wouldn't mind if they just released that as its own game. I wouldn't even mind if it was free-to-play with cosmetic microtransactions.

Story-wise, all three main Gears games take place at the tail end of a global 15-year war. The amount of space they have for battles and characters is pretty damn wide.

But really I just want horde back.

half the movement speed and twice the lag. What's not to love?

I would hate to go back to it now, but those two - three years were incredible. Maybe more so because of the people I played with. Damn, made real friends in that and we are coming onto knowing each other for 5 years.

Gears 3 multi is better than it in almost everyway, except sawed off and retro. Fuck you EPIC for putting that shit in. Then weakening the Digger from the beta to the final game. :(

This is M$; Gears is just another cashcow to them - they'll milk it as long as there's a positive profit margin, then leave it chafed and bleeding in a gutter somewhere just as they've done with Rareware.

How do you get that out of what he has said? How did they milk Rareware? Oh, I missed the "M$" symbol...

Love Gears, one of my favorite games this generation.
It doesn't need a reboot, it ran it's course and should be left as is.

Seems to me Ryse has a better chance to replace gears as a title that defines the next generation for xbox, if the gameplay is good that is.

Yes, make Gears more gritty please. Also, please make the characters more musclebound. They've always looked so scrawny.

Gears of War: Grit Grittier. Directed by a focus group, with a massive tie-in campaign with Mtn Dew and Doritos.

Epic is already working on Sunset Overdrive and seem to be looking at new IPs. Meanwhile they left Gears in the (clearly) incapable hands of PCF who ruined the series with Judgment. As long as this franchise remains with PCF's development team it will be awful. I can't believe they killed my favorite IP of this gen.

More gritty? That's exactly what GoW needs. While we are at it, let's also make it darker.

Ugh, fuck off with that. It's complaints like this that lead to the removal of the horror element of the first game and gave us the bright rainbow land of Azura by the third.

"B-b-but why is this war torn alien planet so dark grey?"
