So Target shipped someone an Xbox One already? [Update: console-banned until launch]

He's being treated like a god for a simple "no"

The unambiguous statement is nice in the face of the barrage of 'CHECK YOUR TOS' defenders.

The idea that Sony is getting a free pass round here is laughable. Did nobody read the MP3/DNLA thread? The fact is Sony have a lot better track record RE: pre launch bannings than MS

They have sent out a clear message. Have you seen Major Nelson's tweets?

Nelson still hasn't said why the guy was actually banned. All he said was that he's 100% sure it won't be permanent, which could mean anything.

Would you care to speculate what this thread would look like had Major Nelson not woken up and sent out a tweet and then post on gaf what he going to do? If someone internally was handling the matter with the user in private then everyone following this whole thing would continue to be unaware and perpetuate their distaste for Microsoft and their policies.

As far as we know, Nelson isn't doing anything besides trying to contact the guy. I would be treating the situation entirely differently if Nelson was saying that someone internally is looking into the matter as well.

Why isn't Nelson actually saying that anyone who got the console early wouldn't be banned? These are easy and obvious details to give and he's not giving them.

How cool is this? Major Nelson reaching out on a Saturday morning to clear all this outrageous hysteria up. Oh, most of you don't care? Sounds like double standards, because if Shuhei Yoshida did the same thing you'd be freaking out about how cool it is.

Can we stop with the frenzy of unjustified Xbox hate and go back to just loving video games, please?

Lol, it's well justified...stop sounding like a shill because that's how this post came off.

Microsoft from the 360 forward has slowly chipped away at our beloved hobby with some shittastic ideas. I know companies have to make money, but they are doing at the expense of the consumer. I adore gaming, have since the first pong machine my dad brought home. That's the reason I will not support them. this move was foolish and them reaching out now to fix it is not going to patch the damage already done.

Am I the only one that still thinks it is strange he had a media blow out..gets banned from live/services and then doesn't post a picture of that?
I am not arguing if he got banned from Live or services or whatever. But with the level of media he was posting and the badge of being the first ban he would post that screen up too.

Hope everything works out for everyone involved.

He did post his banned pic, I'm not digging through 60 pages for you though.

I meant in combination with a more broader official statement that any user who gets a console early is fine and online service would resume on launch date as my post said.

We'll that's probably what Major Nelson is trying to do but trying to reach out to this guy. There's more for MS to do than simply unbanning this guy. They need to trace the console to the target that sent it early and deal with that shitstorm and ensure this doesn't occur with all their other retail shipments. Just seems the sentiment here is someone click this guys GT personally, then check marked banned and went to bed. Once this is sorted out, it's likely you'll hear an official statement.

So... uh, can I get a summary of what happened here? I'm not reading > 60 pages.

  • Guy gets sold an XB1 from Target
  • Shows off a lot of stuff online
  • MS eventually bans his console from XBL
  • Major Nelson comes on here telling us that it won't be a permaban and he's reaching out to the guy

I'm not defending or condemning anybody but c'mon. Shu could tweet a " (O.O) " and get praised but Major or Penello tweet some helpful stuff and it's still criticized negatively.

I like games but I'm not putting anyone on a pedestal, be it Shu, Major, Cerny... I don't care. I see shit for what it is.

It's not SonyGAF's fault that Sony is accessible on this kind of stuff.

Yeah, I get it. He's transparent with this info, readily accessible and that in itself is great. It's just that everyone else doesn't get the same treatment.

Why do you feel that you have a right to know why this person was cut off from xbox live? really, though. I know you're not stupid. You know exactly why he was cut off from xbox live.

  • Someone gets an Xbox One early due to a slipup at Target.
  • Said person posts videos and images of the console's GUI.
  • Microsoft flags videos and his console got hit by an automated console ban from XBL. (not a user Live ban)
  • Major Nelson tries to get his console ban removed by launch.

No, it means he's going to be unbanned. He also said he's going to try and get him unbanned before launch.

I should hope so.
Target sent out 150 units apparently.

Nelson said he is looking into it and more than likely is going to relay with his team to get the situation amended as opposed to him personally unbanning the individual. There's more at play here for Major Nelson to take to twitter and make a statement without consulting the Xbox team and superiors. It's still pretty early into saturday and this all occurred during the AMs.

Because Shu answered the question in unequivocal language in a blanket way that applies to anyone - and he did it with one word.

Nelson comes on here and needs to personally talk to the guy to rectify the situation and apparently can't tell the community, "Yes, if you get your Xbox One early it will be banned from Live but that will be fixed come launch day automatically and without you needing to jump through hoops." That would apply to anyone in this situation and not imply that Nelson is making special provisions for this person, particularly since Target likely sent out more than just this one Xbone early, so there will be more people in this situation.

God damn the bickering and jabbing is reaching toxic levels, some people need to stop being so defensive.

Microsoft's ban policy with their consoles is really weird. The Oman ban thread from a couple of months ago had no closure, some people were banned and the majority of people wern't. The best theory was some people exploited the free Xbox live Gold month promotion. No one from Microsoft released a statement on why or if people were getting banned for Oman or other reasons.

Multiple bans shouldn't be private and information shouldn't be withheld from the consumer. People getting consoles early is a event that might've happened no matter what, therefore Microsoft's policies should reflect that and not hurt early players/consumers.

I see. Thanks. Given the size of the thread, I thought there would be more than that.

Kind of lame that they banned him, but at least Major is trying to contact him.

Tell me about it. He got his own thread for replying "no" to a tweet asking if they'd ban someone for getting PS4 early. He's being treated like a god for a simple "no".

"NO"
ik0ViLnyNyeJ.gif

Even if they would do that, would they come right out and say it? Why say anything damaging against your company? I bet if anyone asked MS before this, the answer would have been "no".
Just goes to show how bad Microsoft fucked up. If Microsoft would have said no, they would have lied and put themselves in an even worse position.

MS is one of the largest companies in the world. They don't have the luxury of being able to take large amounts of time to respond to PR disasters like this.

Major Nelson has had ample time to at least get a clear response from the team on whether using the console early would get you banned or not.

You don't push beta firmware updates on your production network, if MS hypothetically did that it'd be their fault for not considering that stores could break street dates.

Banning users for causes which aren't their fault isn't a good strategy.

It's not a production network according to the Xbox dev. At least not yet.

I think it's perfectly fair for them to say you don't have access to this portion of XBL yet. Ban is another word for access denied. Judging by the Major Nelson tweet, it will get sorted out accordingly.

Whatever they do the damage is already done, no matter if they unban him or give him a fucking pony the headline going forward is:

Guy gets Xbox One Early, MS Bans his Console.

Why even have a situation where that headline can occur? MS incompetence.

reporting a story is far different than displaying Not yet released intellectual property to the wild without permission.

once released that's a different story so long as it within the agreed upon tos which every user agrees to.

i see a lot of posts like this. this guy IS representative of the general public; he's not a member of the press, industry, etc. so if he has an xbone, it IS released into the general public. he hasn't signed an NDA, he hasn't agreed to follow the rules of "street date release" etc and there should be no reason to ban him.

if MS didn't want ppl on live prior to the system launch date, they should have put a system in place to prevent all but whitelisted consoles from accessing prior to that date.

also, what do you think the repercussions for Target are gonna be? i'm guessing absolutely nothing.

Wtf you so salty for? Really, explain it to me. I'm obviously missing something?
Not helping. Just drop it so you guys don't derail the thread (further). Take it to PM if you have to; no one here wants to read it.

People are praising this because it is clear and unequivocal. Which seems to be the exact opposite of MS's messaging throughout the launch of the 'Bone.

And America is the supposed super power of the world but how did PR go for responding the obama care nonsense. Big or not certain situations take time and he can't take it upon himself to make a declaration on his own accord. He's doing the most sensible thing at the moment and reaching out to the affect user and getting all the facts down and then making an official statement if they are going to do one.

Also the answer is clearly no seeing as he has already stated the console will be unbanned.

The statement he made seemed to me as if the unbanning on the 22nd would be for everyone in a similar situation. Him reaching out seemed to be the only special treatment. I dunno though, I don't think he would have gotten banned if he didn't bring so much attention to himself, though I do appreciate what he did.

because..they're not? How is that hard to understand.

They are, with information that they can disclose. Check Penello's twitter. Full of him answering questions.

Just goes to show how bad Microsoft fucked up. If Microsoft would have said no, they would have lied and put themselves in an even worse position.

True.

Penello and Nelson are not transparent. They are in full PR mode when we ask the tough questions.

The banning makes sense, MS just wants to control the messaging associated with the XBOne. After all, they've done such a masterful job of it themselves so far.

Major, yes. I don't get that vibe from Penello though. Only when he has to be in PR mode. Shu acts like the everyman, everyone can relate, he's a seemingly cool guy. That in itself can be PR though.

I hate your avatar, he looks like a dude I know named Manny. fake @$$ Hawaiian.

Ok... I feel sorry for Manny.

Moving on though, too much off topic non sense for me.

Because everyone is not the same, Shu has always been very candid and open. Major Nelson is not in the same league as Shu, Panello is the guy who tried to downplay PS4 specs on this very forum. So no, they dont get treated same way as Shu because they are not Shu.

Fake Edit: Long Live Shu.

Why the hell would you connect to Live knowing MS's history when it comes to early releases?
