PS4 sells through 1 million units on Day 1 in NA, best start in PS / console history

Sony will profit from PS+ in the long run. Think about it. People like me will sub for more then one year and next month there will be new subscribers.

Explains why Sony made the decision to launch two weeks later in EU, gives them time to produce more units.

I think Pachter said Sony started to produce the ps4 at august/october. So in theory they should have produced 2 million units until the end of november. Not all can be shipped until then. Is 750k for EU launch reasonable?

Allocation could be 40% UK, 20% France,15% Germany and 25% other.

Why have they sold so many? There's no killer app yet, is it just the length of time since the last gen was released? Imagine if there was a great launch game they could have sold 2 million.

It's a combination of things. Hype. The talk of it's "power". Resolutiongate. Microsoft's epic fuck-ups. "I might as well get it now rather than later." I've asked the same question of others myself and generally I get "Well I wanna play game X and game Y so why not get the better looking version?"

People rush out to get the latest iPhone every year. Don't ask me how people work. :p

not the biggest fan of the launch lineup, but i picked up my order without a hitch, and the early PSN problems aside (to be expected with the hammering they were getting), it was a solid launch. as a big PS3 user, im really appreciating the way it fetches firmware in the background while i do other things & installs automatically, stuff like that is cool to see. already had a few twitch streams up, which i never really did before either...it's a great little system, and if i get nearly as much out of it as i did the last 3, i'm gonna love it.

It is.

They sold 980,000 but shipped 720,000.
120,000 of the 380,000 that bought it online recieved theirs.
No way. Online shopping wasn't anywhere near as ubiquitous in 2000 as it is now. I've been in ecommerce development since early 2000 and outside of books and DVDs ecommerce was a fraction of a percent in most industries (and even books an DVDs were still single digit percentage then). Games and PC components were a little ahead of the curve, but I'd be shocked if even 30,000 PS2s were sold online in all of 2000.

Well... MS wil. have the pleasure of reporting higher 24hr sales for worldwide market. They are starting with 13 countries at the same time.

But, I really don't think they can match PS4 in any territory, including USA.

Yeah, theres no doubting Ms will boast their worldwide number, theres no reason not to. Headline will simply be something "Xbox One sells 1.5million in 24hrs"... then somewhere buried in the press release it'll mention worldwide but most people don't read those things anyway.

The question is, how many of the sold consoles were pre-orders and how many was sold in stores. I expect the latter is minor compared to pre-order numbers.

Wonder what would have happened if they could provide enough units for store too.

Yup. Also, if I were Sony, I'd hire more engineers to rapidly beef up the OS with features

Viveks, I think people are pretty naive to believe that Sony are working on CD and MP3 inclusion. They'll have that already and the only reason it was removed is to bump up users for Music Unlimited, and they may take a while to include those upgrades ... they ARE a business after all. Sony are sitting on many upgrades just waiting for the right time to introduce them. Watch what happens on and around the 22nd of Nov ;)

Thats what the money covers. MS pays for the projected sales the copies of the PS4 version would make.

Now that we know that a lot of PS4's are being sold, projections may have to increase and future moneyhatting for other games will get more expensive.

This is why I hope Microsoft really starts considering on actually opening up and nurturing new studios.

Buying exclusivity will only get you so far and they will get more and more expensive as the generation goes on, I want all consoles to thrive.

I'm impressed with these numbers, I cant wait to see what 2014 and 2015 will have in store for us Sony fans.

That's great. I just hope the sales remain consistent, and Japan to return back to console gaming. I want Japan to make Jrpg just like ps2 days :(

While I really have no interest in getting a PS4 until the Infamous bundle drops and since there's really nothing interesting for me right now that I can't get elsewhere... I will admit. Sony has done good. The valuing of their customers is something that ought to be a standard and the other two companies should be taking notes.

Hope they can provide even better incentives for me to get one soon.

Yeah, me neither. I'll do what I did with the ps3 and wait until there are several games I want to play and then get a good value bundle. I've still got a ps3, wii u and 3DS games backlog to get through.

The bestbuy I went to had like 50+ PS4 for preorder and about 20 something for those that didn't. Sony did say they limited preorders for those that lined up. We were like free advertisement to people who came up to ask why we were lining up. Tons of people asked.

Yeah I'm sure. I wasn't referring to that at all. I meant for the rest of 2014, like Gaikai and other cool things we haven't even heard about

It's a Japanese company but... I get the impression they have pivoted towards an international organization and focused on a international market.

Still.. Sony is going to give more of an "In" to Japanese development than Microsoft would.

Japanese development having a better position than last gen? Perhaps. Don't expect a revival of the 80s and 90s though....

THE WORDS! They'll drift away without the _!
With stock, they'd probably set a November record.

I'm not really as surprised as a lot of people seem to be. Again, with stock, I'd expect the Xbone to do similar (with it falling behind after the launch period).

Yeah. I am terrible at Excel, as you can see.

But man, this looks like quite an unprecedented success so far.
PS4 beating all other first-month sales within just 24 hours is kind of nuts.

Note: This is purely from Shinra-bansho's numbers (US+Canada)

Buh buh gaming is dead!!

Now we just need this to continue and a JRPG to come out and be a hit in NA and Europe, to send a message to Japan that people still want this. Does not have to do CoD or GTA mega numbers, or even BF3 and FIFA, just decently enough.

I think the PS4 and 3DS will be the consoles/handhelds to own this generation.

If a 7.5 - 7.8 console sold 1 million in NA alone, imagine how a 9.0 console (for polygon) could sell in the US!!!!

More serious: could sony have enough supply for black friday? (that could be the point for MS to nivelate the launch date's difference)

As I mentioned earlier, don't forget Planetside 2. I have a feeling that it will have an explosive launch.

This! SOE definitely seems to think so:
Sony: Planetside 2 is 'Massively Multiplayer Halo' for PS4
Free-to-play is "monumental" for SOE.

by Mitch Dyer NOVEMBER 12, 2013

As Sony Online Entertainment prepares to bring Planetside 2 from PC to PlayStation 4, president John Smedley has some ambitious goals for the online shooter -- namely, his team aims to attract an Xbox audience. “We believe that Planetside 2 is going to be the massively multiplayer Halo for PlayStation 4," Smedley told IGN. "So we want to bring a completely new kind of gameplay to a completely new audience.”

With that in mind, SOE doesn’t expect (or necessarily want) players who are cozy on PC to move over to PlayStation 4. The audiences will consume it in different ways, for one thing. Planetside 2 will see more updates on PC more regularly than it will on PS4, as well, so don't expect cross-platform play. Don't get your hopes up about character transfers, either. “We’re not going to launch with that,” said Smedley. “There have been some discussions going on around it, but it’s complicated.”

SOE's excitement lies with bringing thousands of players into a single game, which, in the case of Planetside 2, involves territorial control, a la Battlefield, wrapped in a Halo-esque sci-fi skin. The future of SOE, Smedley says, is in this sort of experience. “Being able to do real free to play? That’s monumental," he said. "I think it’s a very bright future.”

Look for more from SOE on IGN this week leading up to PlayStation 4's launch.

I think a large number of us would love more JRPGs like the SNES and then PS1 / PS2 days. Unfortunately it seems unlikely. Then again, even if they were to go back to consoles... we'd still see Square crapping in the pool.

I feel like PS4 is the new PS2, the main console to own for about anyone.

That's what I've been saying since the announcement. seems like a perfect balance of old and new, affordable and powerful, and overall just a perfect product for any gamer out there.

Oh, I see. They could probably release Gaikai now in my opinion, but they'll save that for when the momentum dies down a little and then hit the headlines with BC comes to PS4. They need to carry on selling PS3s too you know ;)
