PS4 sells through 1 million units on Day 1 in NA, best start in PS / console history

Well, my first reaction to this news was "Wow, did they actually manage to make that many for launch?".

I think the PS2 and Wii would have outsold this easily if the units had been available. Both those consoles had crazy hype from the mainstream media and I remember so many "non gamers" talking about them, can't say the same for the PS4.

I'm not trying to downplay these sales, I just think they need to be put into perspective first when I look at posts saying "one console future" or "PS2 levels of dominance". I doubt there'll ever be a console as big and dominant as the PS2 again.

Not really true about the Wii. The reason half the people wanted I knew was because other people couldn't get their hands on it. They wanted to buy it and resell it for 2-3x what it cost to buy. There was a huge lack of games for the Wii... I remember only playing Wii sports for awhile and being rather disappointed with my purchase to be honest.

But honestly. Becoming the "Hot Item" for Christmas pretty much ensures high sales. Always has... always will.... see Tickle me Elmo.

Hi ThoughtofSpeaking,

I hear what your saying, and can appreciate to some extent. However, the sports analogy doesn't quite hold up, because free-market competition is not a zero-sum game. In other words, unlike a typical sporting match, there doesn't have to be a winner and a loser (or tie). Indeed, as previous generations have shown, there can exist a healthy "win-win" scenario. Heck, one could even argue that this past generation featured a "win-win-win" trifecta...with Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft all meeting and exceeding their own sales goals and targets.

Of course the best thing is win-win-win. But this talk of it being bad for the industry if it isnt is nonsense. If Nintendo, sony or Microsoft fail, they have to go back to the drawing board see what the others did and offer a more attractive prospect the next time round. That is what healthy conpetition is, not this "Everyone has to be a winner!" Nonsense.

they deserve it, the system is absolutely brilliant. can't stop playing it since I got it friday morning.

Just curious what are you playing? I got Killzone and love it + resogun but am really torn on what else to get. AC and Injustice are tied since Knack looks pretty boring compared to Mario next week.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Doesn't matter if the cost was due to components and not greed. Thoroughly dominating the previous gen is what gave them the balls to launch at $600..
I agree it did give them the balls but I don't think they thought it was a good price regardless of PR.....then again I'm from the UK so the price wasn't double of what I paid for a PS2 or PSX, we was already paying that 500 + dollars for years that why importing was so attractive to UK gamers in the late 90's, even the PS4 is only 50 quid cheaper then PS3 was.
I can buy a PS4 off ebay from people charging more then the US retail price & its cheaper then it'll be on the 29th.
but I'm not arguing that competition isn't good, it is
I just disagree with blaming $599 on Blu-ray.

Wow.

Europe launch could potentially move another million units and Japan could possibly do 300K to half a million.

PS4 might have an installed base of well over 3 million before the new year.

Fantastic. I love to see game consoles prosper, it's better for the consumer when there is competition.

I'm sure xbone will sell around the same amount which will be good for the industry as a whole. (Minus the Wii U unfortunately ): )

This gen is going to be like Muhammed Ali vs Joe Frazier

I dont get why this is surprising... Didnt Tretton say there were 1 million preorders in NA like a month ago?

Keep in mind lots of people cancel preorders.... as in....

WHAT? NO 3D BLURAY?

Preorder canceled.

Keep in mind this is 1 million ONLY in North America. They said preorders were substantially over 1 million since they had announced it. Europe should tack on quite a few more in a couple weeks.

Japan launch is next year, though.

Do we know when the Xbox One is releasing in Japan?

Sony was dominating consoles before the PS1 came out? Incredible.

It's pretty clear that some of you guys can't grasp business 101. Competition in any industry breeds excellence for everyone.

PS2 Sony wasn't really anything special, though. PS2 dominated because it sold a lot very early, not because it was the best product on the market from a hardware or cost perspective, and it was also a pain for developers.

Holy shit people.

the PSX is a direct result of COMPETITION with Nintendo.

The PS2 is a direct result of COMPETITION with Nintendo and Sega, followed by Microsoft as well.

It's not like Sony just made the system, put it out there, and the entire industry decided, yep, this is our leader and our god, we will endeavor to make the best games for it and it alone while ignoring everyone else.

You do realize that third party games are going to be the same on at least 3 different platforms?

That dominance will never, ever happen again. It's funny that people even think it's a possibility.

I'm more interested in seeing what studios make games exclusive to these new systems. What kind of losses or gains are they going to have? It's gonna be interesting.

You are all spot on. I have much to learn.

In my brain I thought of it as: "PS1 and PS2 have amazing libraries and dominated" but I was thinking of it backwards. It was the competition from the pre-PS1 days with Nintendo and pre-PS2 days with Sega that made the PS1 and PS2 the legends they are.

These numbers are great.

and what came out of nintendo's dominance? the SNES.

what are generally considered the best consoles of all time? The PS2 and the SNES.

The SNES only came into being because of the release of the Genesis. Nintendo wanted to keep rolling with the NES before the Genesis was released IIRC.

And the PS2 was kind of horrible from a hardware perspective and had faulty hardware at launch and was supposed to be the least developer friendly system ever. Core gaming is good when enough people are buying core games to cover the costs which is why the PS2 era was very good. If the PS4 does great and the Xbox One does terrible, core gaming likely will see less investment. If both do very well, there's more chance of revenue and core gaming could see more investment.

If the PS4 does incredibly while Microsoft and Nintendo leave the market, Sony will still have competition, but it will be towards social gaming so their resources will likely be focused on capturing those areas instead of core gaming so I think you should hope for competition.

XBONE will beat it for sure just because of the number of countries alone.

Demand has to be there for it to sell. If fact, PS4 will be available in many more countries than Xbone by the end of the year. The battle ground is US and UK. If PS4 outsells Xbone in these 2 regions then MS is in deep trouble.

I managed to snag a console last night at 9pm at gamestop. They had a few people not pick up their units, and after 48 hours were able to sell them.

It was great, I traded in a ton of games, they made sure no one else came in once 9pm hit, and sold me a PS4 in a very discreet black bag. There were a few other people that got to do the same as me thanks to a few people not picking theirs up.

Who knows there might be a new contender.

There won't be unless you consider under powered IOS/Android machines a contender. No other company will enter the traditional console space. Stock holders won't accept the traditional console model they want big margins and quick profits these days.

I find it rather amusing you seem to be attributing PS4's sales to how the progress of the Xbox One prior to launch, even the Wii U no less. Not terribly surprising I suppose, people claimed the war was over last gen too for no particular reason other than to say it.
You'd be surprised to see how many bros still think that "Xbox is not doing used games and you always have to be online", even now.

Without Microsoft's mandatory Kinect and DRM fiascos, and Nintendo releasing proper next-gen hardware instead whatever the Wii U is, the PS4 would have never gained the traction it did. The system is selling simply because it's the only next-gen option without any major flaws.

agreed

Xbox Live marketplace is still miles ahead of EShop and PSN.
The only one that comes close is steam.

I don't understand this notion at all. Steam is leagues ahead of anything else, and PSN has been better than XBL for a couple of years now, if only because of PS+

You forget Steam machine? We don't know what is it but saying nobody will want to step in to taking living room space in false.

You're right, forgot about that. Xbone is releasing next year in Japan as well but no solid date.

Even without Japan though, I think 3 million before the new year is still well within the realm of possibility.

A console isn't something like food or water. If the market isn't interested in your product they will ignore it.

see the WiiU.

Eh, I ignored the WiiU because there are alternatives available. If WiiU was the only gaming console on the market and PC gaming didn't exist I guess I'd have no choice but to pick one up if I wanted to play some of the games on it.
