PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

Mostly AC4. Could be the system just isn't stressed out that hard by that game. Resogun seems okay, too. Haven't played Knack since yesterday, but I think it sounded okay too.

It makes perfect sense, you're playing a last gen game with a few next gen features added, where as I'm playing an exclusively developed next gen game that's pumping out titan level visuals.

Stuck on the screen with the PS logo after the system crashed while playing Knack, and went through the "recovery" process.

Any ideas? Should I just shut it off and hope for the best? It's been like this for 15 minutes, and the light is pulsing blue.

EDIT: Nevermind, it fixed itself :p Yay!

Is there known issues with using Dolby or DTS bitstream? It has minor skips.....linear PCM is fine because it's still multichannel but I want my DTS lol

Non-slim PS3 had the same issue. It may actually be a receiver handshake issue caused by the increased data throughput required by DTS HD. I believe PCM tops out at 96 while DTS tops at 192 or somesuch. With the PS3 I heard various theories, between HDMI cables and different receivers, but never solutions. Only used to pop out/in for me once or twice every few movies though.

It has happened once to me with the PS4, during Dark of the Moon... go figure.

I should have asked this here:

I getting like 14 Mbps in my internet connection test with PS4 which is seems very low for wireless N since I get consistently around 40+ Mbps on my iPhone 5 on my wifi, I have Verizon Quantum. I reset the modem and tried other things, anyone else seeing similar speeds?

I am using WPA2 (AES) btw
PS3 had a very low quality and cheap WiFi chip, that might be the case with PS4 as well.

Try turning it off with the power button, hold it until it is powers down, then try booting in safe mode.

Please don't pull the plug, only do that when you have tried everything.

Has anyone noticed input lag with their DualShock 4? I was playing resogun today and at one point randomly I noticed a significant amount of input lag, not sure why.

Anyone experience something like this?

I haven't and haven't heard/read about it until now. Could it have been bluetooth interference?

It's Been 7+ hours since I resurrected my PS4 with a brand new 1tb harddrive and it's been running like a champ. :D

I'm just gonna stay away from Netflix for awhile.

Has anyone experienced no audio when ps4 wakes up from standby? Happened twice now...to fix it I just put it into standby and wake it up again. Hopefully that's a software issue.

It still sends audio to the controller but no audio to my TV until I sleep and wake it up again.

I don't want to return it if this is just a software bug that will be fixed with an update.

So out of my group of close friends, only 1 person bothered to snag a PS4 and hilariously it has a faulty disc drive right out of the box.

He's apparently got a shipping box on the way and sony gave him a 3 year extended warranty for his trouble.

I'm honestly kind of annoyed at the level of saltyness going around among owners of busted systems. Yes, you spent a bunch of money on a new gaming console but man, you people should realize by now that there will always be some level of failure with these things. The wii U had some bad units, the 3DS scratched its own screens, undoubtedly the xbox one will have a few duds. This shit just happens.

1 million systems shipped and "normal" failure rates for this stuff shouldn't exceed 2-5%. Hate to say it but even just 2% means at least 20,000 systems out there that aren't working right out of the box. We can all start worrying if people who have a working system right now suddenly get some hardware failures occurring in January. For now though, having systems with issues right out of the box , well sadly that's exactly how it's supposed to go with any device. It should either work or not work.

As with any device that has updatable firmware, you always run the risk of bricking your system if anything goes wrong in that process and with so many new owners all doing the same thing during the last 48 hours or so , there are bound to be a handful of duds created.

I fully understand it DOES suck for those who bought one already but unless you want to spend an extra 200$ on the console to allow for much more extensive testing on a per unit basis it just won't happen.

Can we please stop trying to shame the customer? This is Sony or their retail partner's fuck up... period. Every single person affected, regardless of how big or small a pool it may be, has a right to be as pissed off as they want. A customer does not have to be understanding of "acceptable failure rates" or how expensive Q and A testing may be. The one and only concern a customer has is that the product works as promised.

Also lets stop trying to pretend we have any clue how big this is. We don't know and Sony will never tell us. I will say, anecdotally, I have not seen this amount of reported hardware failure of "bricked" and DoA devices in a very long time.

Having weird issues with Killzone and ds4 input. Getting really horrible lag at some points, like the controller has lost sync. It's really fucking up my groove, especially in the middle of a big firefight, and I lose control -_-

Man, I thought after the problems they had with initial six axis controllers, shit like this would never happen :/

Possibly, but I have never ever had an issue with the DS3 so that would be pretty surprising. Hopefully a software issue, not hardware.

Sounds similar to what happened to me when playing resogun..

Repost from other thread:

Having a problem turning my PS4 on...

Pulsing light on the console disappeared after I removed the AC source.

Not really sure how to push that dinky power button, but nothings happening, same hwen i push the eject disc button (there's no disc in it).

When I push the PS button with the controller, it pulsates white on and off.

When the controller is being charged it only turns that amber charging color for a second or two, then disappears.

What's going on?

What color is the system light?

Got my hdmi-dvi cable from amazon but I still can't set the resolution any higher than 480p. Everything's still grayed out :/

Could be a defective cable. My ps3 exhibited similar problems to yours - turns out it was a bad hdmi cable.

Also adapters seem to be problematic (hdmi to dvi), my cable box in particular.

Well at the very least I'm glad I wasn't the only one the eject problem happened to.

I haven't been able to get any odd behavior today, so while it seems crazy some of the issues I had could be PSN related, I'm certainly going to try to use this thing as normal and see if things stay stable.

Good luck, atomsk!

I ended up just taking mine into the Sony store today. It kept happening, and other odd behavior was starting to crop up (like random beeping) so I felt it was best to just let them have a look. I probably wouldn't have done that if I didn't have 3D World and Zelda this week, lol.

Today I was in the middle of a Killzone match when I was bumped back to the home menu and got a message something akin to 'another user has logged into this PS4' or something. I hit OK and jumped right back into the match no problem.

Sucks, but I'm hoping it's some glitch with PSN and not indicative of some hardware problem.

Do you guys know any good extended warranty for my ps4, that supports worldwide?

I tried to get squaretrade, but it only supports the US =/

Yep, had this happen with all my games, worst case was in Need for Speed where my car was spinning in circles for like 10 seconds while I had my hand off the controller, eventually stopped, but geez. x_x

Hmm, had my friend bring over bring over his PS4 today to test. Tried multiple HDMI cords, various TVs, ensuring no little metal pins were bent upwards inside the HDMI port, and nothing helped. The unit would power on, but no signal to the TV and it would not power off by pushing the power button, but would eventually turn off if you held the power button. No booting into safe mode either.

Just for shits and giggles we removed the HDD then put it back in, didn't do anything. Wasn't really sure if it would, but figured it couldn't hurt.

The only thing I could see that seemed a TINY bit off was when I looked at the little pins on the HDMI connector on the PS4, there were several pins per side, and only one of them seemed like the metal pin didn't go all the way to the top - it stopped about 1-2 mm, whereas all the other ones top and bottom went all the way. The pin in question was on the bottom, in the middle. Dunno if it means anything.

Ah well, he'll be calling Sony tech support tomorrow to check it out. Fortunately if it does need service the place it needs to go to in Canada isn't too far away from Toronto, so he could probably just drive it over rather than wait for a box.

So out of a total of 4 new PS4 owners in my little circle, just 1 seems to be having an issue.

Tomorrow night I pick up my very own PS4... can't wait to test it out! :)

I've read several people are able to use the mic on the pulse elite headset when having it connected to the controller. I connected mine to the controller but I cannot use the mic. The game audio and chat coming from other players works fine. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Anyone have any ideas?

FYI: it appears the What's New area is working now, as well as the live area thing for each game.

those with working PS4's go try it to confirm. click What's New to make sure it loads content, and then go to a game and just hover over it. should load some stuff underneath it.

So my friend is having this issue with his where his system keeps freezing up and shutting down. He's tried restoring the system to factory default and rebuilding the database and nothing's working. any ideas?

I've had a few issues happen with my ps4; nothing a cold boot wouldn't solve.

1. After starting Warframe, the audio output wouldn't come as DTS, but as 2.1.
2. The device would stop connecting to my router. When doing the network test, it would show failure when trying to get an IP from my router. Which shouldn't have happened, as all my other connected devices worked fine.

As I said, doing a cold boot solved the issues.

Not sure if this has been asked yet, but has anyone else experienced an issue where if you upload a video to Facebook it blocks all other traffic on the network until the video has been completely uploaded?

So is there a consensus on whether to turn the system off completely or to leave it in standby mode? I've been leaving mine standby since I got 2 days ago.

Will one way or the other harm the system?

I have a weird problem with my PS4 that didn't happen until today. I'm playing the multiplayer on Killzone and my TV randomly switches to HDMI1 (PS4 is HDMI3). I played through the entire campaign the first 2 days with no problems and it just started doing it a few times today during my matches. I have a Samsung Smart TV.

Try turning off HDMI Link.

This isn't really a hardware problem, but I've went into the "Test Internet Connection" setting twice now today and both times the system hard froze, forcing me to unplug the AC adapter. Has anybody else had this issue?

Finally got in a chat with Sony....They are overnighting everything there and back.

Edit: "The good news is that we will be providing you a brand new system with same day service. This means we will ship your new PS4 the same day we receive it, with everything being overnighted."

Try using your PS3 power cord.

I wonder if you (or anyone else) are able to confirm that Japanese accounts or UK PSN/ download store is connected or populated? As due to get my console later, would be great to know If i will be able to download anything to play :/ /updated patches etc

Unplug everything, wait 10 minutes, reconnect.

It took more like an hour, but it seems to be working now. But I'm still having it sent into Sony to make sure it isn't broken. It's done this three times already, there is no gunk on the eject button or power button. When in standby, it keeps acting like it's ejecting a disk. Even when removed off, after an hour, it did that noise immediately after I plugged it in. It eventually cleared up, but I'd be feeling better knowing I got a new unit that isn't shitting on me two days after I buy it.

I am back with odd developments. Normal day of gaming, disc drive still sounds like a demon holwer monkey when inserting/ejecting. I get the weird thought to cycle a disc while the console is vertical not horizontal. The horrible sound goes away and it sounds like a completely normal drive! I put it back in the entertainment center, and it seems fixed, but with each insert/eject it becomes worse and worse until it comes back. Fun fact: while oriented upside down horizontally the sound is also gone. WTF

Wrote this in the other thread, just trying to gauge it off others. Not too concerned, but KZ started really chugging for me 2 rounds in a row online. Prior to that very smooth.

Really lame situation at first.
Connected everything and no signal on the TV. Held the power button to turn it off, unplugged everything and plugged it back, turned it on...and still the same.

Remembered that I connected the HDMI cable to an HDMI switch I have, which works; but I decied to check it and it wasn't getting any signal (when it does it turns a red light on). Turn on the Wii U...and bam! red light and PS4 image appears on screen. Turned the Wii U off...and back to no signal. :/

Guess it was one weird handshake issue. After that (and performing the update while leaving the Wii U on the main menu); turned it off; plugged the HDMI cable directly to the TV and... no additional problems at the moment.

Wi-fi was really slow, couldn't even enter to the PSN Store. Found an ethernet cable and now everything's smoother and can actually get into the store.

Hopefully it will continue that way.

Anyone else have a problem where the HDMI audio wont work when you start the PS4 up but a restart makes it work again?

Had it happen to me only once so far since i've had the PS4.

I hope this is a firmware problem and not a hardware problem...
