Here are the videos showing the different boot times using a HGST Travelstar 7k1000 2.5-inch 1tb 7200rpm sata iii HDD.
All apps that are run are the digital versions of the game. I didn't actually time anything but you can hear when the app starts and see when it's loaded so if someone wants to go in and record the times, feel free. I'll update the videos descriptions/ this post with that info.

We need a basis for the benchmarks. Anyone using the stock drive, please post times for loading up your individual games and boot time. I only have Killzone and Resogun ,so I'll upload those times later, but we need timeframes for the other games as well. That way we have a better idea about the improvement a HDD is doing.

Momentus XT 750GB Hybrid

8GB Nand + 7200RPM Drive

Everything has been timed from beep until menu, for games, from launch to Title screen, each tested a few times for mean)

Cold boot = 17.5Sec
Standby = 22.5 (Dunno why this is higher? No downloads/install)
Standby while download = 2.5/3sec

COD Disc = 8.Sec
Flower = 19.8 Sec (alot of Studio ads + Controller instructions before menu)

Can update this if you wish with more games as I get them... AC4 tomorrow

Once I get my UK PsStore opporating can do all the digital stuff.

I think it should. I'm taking the 500GB stock drive from the PS4 and putting it into my PS3 phat so I can download free PS+ games on it.
If we're using hdd that has been used should I format it first or installation will take care of it?

Never swapped out the PS3 hdd before, so I'm not sure. Sorry.
It's alright. I was rather thinking of swapping ps4 hdd with a WD black 7200 drive that I bought for other device that I no longer use. I'll try to swap it this weekend.

My plan exactly. I was going to use it as a drive for storing TV shows, but I'm going to put it in my PS4 instead and chuck the removed drive into a caddy instead.

Hey guys, quick question - Can low temperatures damage a hard drive? After ordering one for the PS4, I've been given the run around by a courier service over here in the UK before receiving it. To cut a long story short, I have the hard drive now, but it's been out in the cold for the past few days.

The box it came in is a little damp, but undamaged. And the plastic bag within the box was fine, and plastic seal that houses the drive is alright too. However the HDD itself is quite cold. I won't be able to test the drive until the PS4 release next week Friday, so it will obviously warm up by then. However, I'm just curious if the low temperature it has been subjected to will effect it in any way? It's not freezing, just cold.

Many thanks.

Potentially yes. The magnetic platter can warp under certain temperatures, but only under extreme conditions. Usually products will have a recommended operating temperature in the specs so maybe check the manufacturer's website. If it's an SSD I think you'll be fine though.

Ofcourse, yeah sorry, can't believe I didn't think of that. I bought an HGST Travelstar, and the non-operating environmental temp is -40° - 65° C. Certainly wasn't anywhere near that cold outside (probably around 3° C), so I'm hoping it will be fine!?

As long as you're not in Sahara or Siberia, you'll be fine. Even if you get stuff and it's -30 outside, just leave the equipment in room temperature for a few hours before using it.

Ordered my Seagate 1TB SSHD from here. Hopefully it arrive on or before launch day next week (EU). Seems like the best compromise between space, price and speed to me anyway.

Great HDD, that's the HDD I chose for my PS4. Yeah it's 750GB but that's more than enough for now till the price for 1TB SSD's drop. The WD Scorpio Black HDD is the fastest 2.5 HDD on the market as well, faster than the Travelstar 7K1000 by a big margin.

You don't have a PS4 yet? Maybe you should test your latest build of DriveClub on the SSHD when you get it to get some benchmarks. :)

I also bought the Scorpio Black 750GB, but do you have any sources to back up that claim? I know it's a fast drive, but I don't think it is faster by a "big margin."

Don't SSD drives have limited access life. If you keep accessing it, won't it wear out faster?

I'm thinking that's not too ideal for a PS4 that will be writing a lot over its lifespan. Can anyone clarify for me?

No. Maximum height is: 9,55mm

Yours is 15mm

Shit, I'm stupid. Thanks.

So this HGST 1.5TB is the biggest compatible HDD right now?

EDIT: I went ahead and bought the 1.5TB drive. That should definitely be large enough for quite some time. Thanks for your help guys.

Writes wear them out, reads don't. But the life expectancy is easily 10+ years still. I've had two SSDs in my PC now for two years and their SMART numbers are all still at 100%.

Flubit have offered me this drive at £47. Might have to bite.

It's only 750GB, and 7200RPM, but reports so far seem to say SSHD can even be beaten by 7200RPM in some cases.

Seems I'll pay nearer £80 for 1TB at 7200RPM/SSHD.

You should. That's a damned fine HDD. I managed to pick one up for $45 USD and couldn't pass up the price and performance, even if the storage was a minor bump.

I'm just trying to update now, but some people have not included full hard drive details, some seem to be timing things wrong so the times they list directly contradict the video they post in my opinion so who knows what people who are not posting videos are doing.

Frankly it's a bit of a mess.

PS4 Cold Boot: 17.5 (21.8 seconds)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lm0leNcOz_U

Blacklight: Retribution: 34 seconds (43.8 seconds)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEuR-P4y6cM

Warframe: 36 seconds (starts after update check) (1:15.9 assuming it does that update check every time)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMpih2n124s

Flower: 17 seconds (26 seconds)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRU3Nvo-iSU

Kilzone: Shadowfall: 8 seconds (13.8 seconds)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x58mZ9hWdhA

COD: Ghost: 11.3 seconds (13.5 seconds)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqHC6PjPh9g

I've just watched every video and in my opinion the times you posted are too short for several videos.

I'm going from the moment you pressed the button to the moment you get a prompt on screen for another, or once the UI is loaded. Not as soon as you see something appear that isn't a logo.

I have listed the times I think in the quote above.

With this kind of disparity in how different people are measuring it makes it almost impossible to get a real gauge of where things stand. Clearly the only reliable way to gather this kind of information is to have one person do it with multiple drives. Or at least get recordings of every test by every person so that they can all be looked at and judged by one person to the same standard each time.

Here is the update. I've done what I can but frankly it's all over the shop and we don't have nearly enough data. The other issue of course is that games could be designed to get to the menu quick but have longer load times for saves and stuff. Those are things that matter more than the initial boot. I'm just going to put a 512GB Evo SSD in and be done with it.

I believe the momentus XT 7200RPM Drive needs updated. I wrote how I did it, if it requires a video, I guess I could put one together. The times are definately accurate.

edit: Ta for the update :)

Btw COD ghosts on that Drive only takes 8 seconds from Dash to main menu (where it displays press start) Its the fastest loading out of anything iv tried yet. Disc based.

Would love to see more from the SSD times people :)

Frankly it's a bit of a mess.

Iv just noticed potentially why that previous Momentus XT drive may be different, was it definately a Hybrid?

My Full HD code is :

Seagate Momentus XT 750 GB Internal 7200 RPM 2.5" ST750LX003 Hybrid Hard Drive (notice the one in your spread sheet is a different code.

Brand: Seagate
Model: Momentus XT (ST750LX003)
MPN: ST750LX003
Storage Capacity: 750 GB
Rotation Speed: 7200 RPM
Interface: SATA III, SATA SSD
Cache: 32 MB
Form Factor: 2.5"

My times again for reference:
Everything has been timed from beep until menu, for games, from launch to Title screen, each tested a few times for mean)

Cold boot = 17.5Sec
Standby = 22.5 (Dunno why this is higher? No downloads/install)
Standby while download = 2.5/3sec

COD Disc = 8.Sec
Flower = 19.8 Sec (alot of Studio ads + Controller instructions before menu)

(Will Do AC4 tomorrow) - I could do warframe and blacklight retribution, but they typically do their download update checks while launching, since connections/server distance could effect the time, I would think it is not worth while.

Right. I'm wanting to order a new drive today ready for launch next Friday. I have the choice of the Seagate 1TB SSHD, the HGST 7K1000 HDD, or the WD Scorpio Black 750GB.

Will someone just please pick for me?

The load times on DRIVECLUB are seriously quick, even with just the stock HDD :)

Can't wait to find out how much faster SSHD/SSD are going to be!

I launched between a few games, noticed little change... I will do more tests. I want to see
the difference in launching a game #1- 4xtimes, time it, launch another game 4xtimes, then launch game#1 again time it and compare 4x vs 1x (with a potentially cleared cache)

Early indications show little difference, both good speeds... both more noticable over the standard 5400RPM drive, but the physical part of my hybrid is 7200RPM

Alright, fuck it. I'm going all in with the Samsung EVO SSD.

Problem is, I've got stuff saved on my PS4 drive currently. What's the best way to clone or copy that stuff off the drive so that when I swap the SSD in, its like nothing changed.

I need help Gaf. The Seage Hybrid drive I bought arrived today and I put it in the console, but when I boot it, it goes straight to Safe mode asking me to update the FW to 1.51

I've tried updating both from the Internet and from a USB stick but it says an error occured. Can anyone who did this procedure help me please? EU PS4 here by the way.
