Killzone: Shadow Fall |OT| Nothing Stops This Rain

I honestly don't think there is a problem here. The game tells you the general direction, it's your job to find the way. At least, I always managed to make my way no problem. It can be argued though that many of these games in general rely too much on following a marker instead of exploring for yourself, but at least with Killzone it makes sense with the tech. As for the levels themselves, they are fairly linear besides the first few, and I don't think I ever had trouble finding my way.

Can't say it's a fundamental design issue, it's more down to personal preference.

It's absolutely a design issue. People like to congratulate themselves for "getting" Killzone SF's design by commenting on the openness and difficulty, but to be honest the campaign isn't either of those things. There's that image people like to toss around that comparing "1995 shooter design" and "2013 shooter design," but it's pretty disingenuous to impy that Killzone is laid out anything like a classic 90s shooter.

I'm still having fun with the campaign overall, but I do think the levels are poorly laid out. There's a difference between exploring and wandering aimlessly.

I just recently finished the campaign. I think it's the best they've made for a Killzone game. Really enjoyed it.

Now back to multiplayer

LOL, I guess it comes with expectations or something. Some of us that love MP possibly just play the campaign casually or in another respect know that GG aren't the best writers in the biz.

As far as design I like some of the levels and others seem a bit rushed. I guess I am just not as annoyed as some because I see these same issues everywhere.

Maybe they took the hunt for comics a little too seriously and just started making false treasure rooms everywhere. Anyway, that map is hilarious.

My experience with Chapter 8:

-Free falling WTF why is this planet falling apart. Where am I? I thought we were landing on Vektan or something and Vektan did not look like this. Ok, I am so confused. Death. Death. Death. Land. Ok that was not so bad. Endured it. Glad they patched it.

-WOAH, this game finally has impressive graphics! This level looks amazing and is the first level in the game that jumps out as something on the Crysis/Metro 2033 "best graphics" level. Ruins everywhere, buildings falling apart. Lots of lens flare. Cool lighting. Nice.

-Mobile Scan Unit open area. ARGHGHGHGHGHGGHGHGHGGHGHGHGGH. STOP DOING STEALTH SECTIONS GUERILLA. YOU DO THEM TERRIBLY. They need to stick to SHOOTING SCARY ROBOT PEOPLE, the shooting is fine and even kind of fun at times, but all the non-shooting gameplay is such shit.

-More Mobile Scan Unit but this time you have rocket launchers and there's more cover and ok this one is not so bad.

-More zomg graphics woahhhhhhhhh

-Chapter end.

Please tell me there are no more confusing stealth sections in the game from this point to the finish?

Also the part at the end of Chapter 7 where you have to DEFEND THE AREA while infinite dudes with shields and stuff charge you was pretty terrible. Not looking forward to more defensive wave gameplay :\ The whole energy shields thing where you need to use the OWL to bomb them but the OWL range is shitty and less than your guns is no good :(

I have some very bad news (chapter 9).

Press up on the d-pad to get an objective marker, and double-tap the same button to get an objective list.

Have you used the objectives-marker? I can't really see how finding the objectives is a problem, the game is pretty linear.

Yes i did all the time. it's just that there where so many rooms/alleys to walk in to that resulted in a dead end...

Just did the freefall part and got it on my fourth or fifth try, some people just love bitching and exaggerating things, for a launch title this game is the bees knees, loving the visuals and dat restrained soundtrack! Very different from previous games...

Edit: I remember reading about a different freefall? My bad! The first one wasnt so bad hehe

That freefall was extreme. I was like holy moly this guy has elephant balls made of T2 metal.

I'm still having fun with the campaign overall, but I do think the levels are poorly laid out. There's a difference between exploring and wandering aimlessly.

The difference is that I'm saying it depends on personal preference while you are saying it's a design issue. It really boils down to player input/experience. You don't like it, but others seem to get through it fine. Personally I would say the forced sections later in the game where you have nothing to do but die repeatedly until you get it right is more apt to be called a design flaw, but not the pseudo-open ended linearity of Killzone's map structure. BTW I don't usually play shooters, and my argument was not based on comparing it to anything except with the direction markers.

not liking it != design flaw. There is a difference that I think a lot of people don't realize.

EDIT: That being said, I do think that the game becomes pretty linear and I would have liked more open ended design like the forest level. But honestly I don't remember there being any maps in Killzone:Shadowfall that reflect your picture, where there were 10-15 paths that lead to nothing. That seems like a huge exaggeration. If there was, then I missed those paths because I was following the objective marker. Also, a lot of paths have equipment stock/health packs so I feel like your complaint is pretty out there in general.

EDIT #2: Not to mention, scanning the surroundings tells if there are enemies and items nearby. Having all of these options together helps making defining the proper path pretty straightforward.

I didn't finish the single player yet, but I also like the explore your self idea. I never really got lost since the level design is very straight forward. I don't understand problems with this game but maybe it is because I didn't finish it yet.

But I do like open shooters, and I also quite like some linear ones. I'm not really sure what you're getting at here. There are plenty of things people like and don't like that can be criticized by someone else. In my opinion, it is a design flaw.

Just wait till you get to chapter 7-8 and then you will find out if the issues bug you. That is where the most complaints about the game lie.

Fair enough. I can understand not liking it though, as it does leave something to be desired, especially after playing games that are more open in design. I can only handle about one or two straightforward FPSs before I get bogged down. Gotta have more gameplay variety. Bioshock Infinite had a similar kind of forced design, but at least that made up for it in terms of story.

To me the campaign has been very good. I'll dabble in multi-player and some botzone, but this is the type of game that is pretty replayable to me. That's all I tend to ask of a good FPS campaign. Nice environments and variety to the levels. I love the default weapon rail gun thing. The sniper on that is one for the ages.

Thought KZ:SF was great, the visuals are absolutely stunning (make sure you brightness is calibrated on your TV, i re-done mine with the PS4, the difference is amazing and adds alot of punch to the lighting and shadows, seriously)

Sound was amazing. I want that soundtrack, punchy and futuristic. Graphics are awesome, period. Launch title or not (omg to the future graphixx), echo looked great.

Story was okay throughout, last couple of chapters, damn... Didnt see that coming, still shocked about it all :( - Will do a second playthrough.

Dafuq are some of you guys expecting from a shooter, as far as they go this is pretty good. As some have said, people love to bitch. Looking forward to the next game. Combat etc was great, so next game... ramp up the story a tad :)

I am on what I assume is the last chapter (THANK FUCKING GOD) and the difficulty is absolutely off the charts ridiculous. If I didn't hate this game enough already it throws in unbelievably frustrating and hard enemy after enemy after enemy at you in the last part of the game. I did the
boss fight
- that was SHIT, and now I flew through the sky to a huge ship/platform thing.

I really hate this game, such a massive disappointment. The worst 1st party Sony game I have ever played, and a fucking terrible first person shooter.

Huh? I am not the best FPS player a since I rarely play multiplayer, but Killzone wasn't particularly difficult compared to other shooters. Using the OWL makes a big difference, have you done that?

Yeah I use the OWL although I find it quite fiddly to use mid-fight. I wish you could upgrade it, I thought I read that you could (give it a better shield, better fire power etc).

Grab the

any time you come across it. It makes that part and a similar section in Chapter 9 relatively simple (at least on normal).

I don't think I'll be playing much multiplayer in this game, especially if me and my group of friends ever get around to playing Battlefield and we get hooked on that. I don't really dabble in multiplayer outside of a game or two here and there.

The multi in this destroys BF4/COD Ghosts. It's so damn good. Balance is near perfect, maps are extremely well designed, and the teamplay in it is so, so sweet. They really nailed it. As more people pick it up and put time into it, you're going to hear a lot of praise for it. I don't even want to play BF4 anymore after sinking time into this. It's just not as satisfying (and not nearly as stable.)

Also blows my mind people are bitching about the campaign. Battlefield 3 and 4 campaigns are garbage compared to this one. I haven't played Ghosts but I expect in a way I already have since I played every COD up to Modern Warfare 2's campaign.

Man, I'm really digging mp. Took a while to get the hang of it, but it finally clicked. Managed to get 1st place today, but I was too damn slow to complete the finishing move and got sliced up. I'll hop back in sp later tonight or tomorrow.

Yep. I wouldn't say it makes it trivial, but certainly much easier.
The reload time is the biggest pain the the ass.
In that part,
I also killed/rushed my way to one of the doors on the side and the waves seemed to stop coming. I initially camped near the door and they seemed to never end.

Hmm. Not that I've seen. Just the DLC to change the colors. I'll be PISSED if there is and I missed it!

Just beat the campaign. Man, the later chapters really drop off in terms of quality, creativity and general level of fun. Went from being pleasantly surprised to being just annoyed by the thought of playing the game at all.

Full game spoilers

The parts in the middle of the game where you're on and escaping the Helghan side are just absolutely fantastic. Lots of visual and gameplay variety. I think after that it definitely went downhill in terms of quality, although nothing terrible. But those moments for me made it a great campaign. I also like the final mission with Echo.

So, just beat this....

Its awful. Fell waaay short compared to KZ2 and KZ3 (Not length wise, gameplay-wise). They were not "award winning" campaigns but they were fun and intense, what we have in Shadow Fall is a mess. It has its moments but generally its too slow paced (bored me to tears at some of the space parts) and that Freefall chapter dulled the game for me. Whoever designed that piece of shit deserves to be fired and never hired back for game development. The peak of the game was
the attack on the city and the Helghan parts
.

Multi is fun at least but nowhere as accesible as something like COD. KZ2's MP is still the best of the series. All in all... its all graphics and techno show (and even then I already played Crysis 3 in Ultra some months ago so there was nearly zero graphical impact for me). Yes, it looks very nice and I was surprised a few times but the general gameplay is shit, as well as the ridiculous story. Hell, this is worse than Knack. If I gave points to games... I'd give this a 4/10.

Part of me just hopes, that if there is another Killzone, that Guerrilla finally takes the hint that people are only interested in the Helghast and desperately want to play as them. They took small strides towards that with Shadow Fall, but I'd really have preferred to just play as a Helghan.

However, if they haven't taken the hint by now, I doubt they ever will. They had the PERFECT opportunity to do just that with Shadow Fall too, given the time jump.

Any tips for evading the missiles in chapter 9? I actually avoided them all on my first try, but when I got up to the floating part afterwards I couldn't tell where to go and I assume I hit an invisible ceiling, so I restarted to the checkpoint after getting fed up with the slow movement. Now I can't get past the missiles.

edit: nm, I finally got through.

Campaign could have been longer, kind of ended on a whimper. Little bit heavy on the setpiece I feel in proportion to the gunfights.

Would have loved to see a couple chapters playing as Echo.

Really? I felt as far as modern FPS games go it was really light on setpieces and the ones that were there were pretty short.

Is this thread spoiler approved? I could go give some of my thoughts on it.

Not much gameplay in Chapter 1 and 10 for obvious reasons. Spaceship chapter save for the escorting the doctor is pretty light. Not a lot of action either when you cross the wall as a refugee (it did pick up at the end though I think). The chapter that ended in a shooting gallery wave defense (maybe it was okay throughout, but the last part stuck with me). Paraglding chapter with artillery sabotage.

Maybe it's because I don't normally play shooters, and the ones I do tend to be single player focused.

Ending:

Definitely not what I expected, but the last (stealth) mission was a nice way to send it off. Seemed like Keller died super suddenly, not sure why Echo couldn't have swung back around to help him out once she regained control :-/

They need to hire a stud dev to focus on cleaning up their story and certain mechanics. These games feel so close, but always seem to come up just short of that next level of greatness.

Just finished it. A lot better than I expected considering GG's knack for some really poor storytelling. I can see the studio is growing but they still need much better writing. Overall, I'd give the game a solid 8. Visually, the game is a hell of a nice way to begin next-gen. I'm excited to see what GG can do with a better writer at the studio and taking another crack at the Killzone franchise.

Really am excited to see what else the studio can do if they are truly working on an action-rpg. Technically and artistically GG are an amazing studio - they're just missing that final piece of the puzzle which is a solid narrative and writing team. With that in place; GG could easily become one of the BEST studios around.

Im up to the fifth chapter, its taken me 4hrs or so and I some of it has seemed pretty hard.

The only other FPS I own is Killzone 2. If DriveClub was out at launch, I would have bought that instead of this game, but Im not too disappointed with this.

Cant stand the multiplayer though. Took me about 2hrs to work out that L3 was to sprint! I must have looked like a sitting duck all those times people came and killed me!.
