Andrew House: PS4 sold through 2.1 million units worldwide as of 12/1, 700K in EU/AU

Bolded "5M plus" franchises going into this generation? Well I guess everything is possible.

He's way off on God of War. Never did those numbers in the past and is in franchise fatigue + story dead-end mode now.

Uncharted he's probably right.

Good numbers for Sony.

In addition, they are air freighting units to the UK according to MCV, which means the 250,000 will grow very quickly over here, each planeload can bring around 10,000 units and I expect Sony have two or three arriving every day for the next two weeks. The big boat from China is expected on the 11th of December in Rotterdam, that is the massive pre-Xmas consignment for Europe.

The 2nd wave launch is about twice NA too. Anyways, there's no telling what they'll do after 3 months of console blue ball; Japan has a tendency to do whatever the hell it wants relative to the rest of the world.

I wonder what the statistics are for Japan with previous console launches, something at the level of PS4 just to get an idea i guess.

Damn. So the UK might not see the same kind of drop as the Xbone did in week 2?

Makes perfect sense that Microsoft have prioritised UK and NA stock. They've already won every other market, these are the two markets where Microsoft will be able to put up any sort of fight.

There was expectation that the EU would match NA numbers, but yes Sony shipping 1.1 million consoles since the PS4 launch on November 15th is still impressive regardless.

Could have been way higher if they stocked Europe better. In addition to lowballing Europe in general I guess they really wanted to prioritize markets where Xbox traditionally has been stronger. Makes business sense. Here the PS4 is on backorder until Q1 2014. I preordered in June the day they announced the price at E3 and I'm not getting my unit until sometime this week. You want a unit for christmas? Tough luck.

According to several sources, God of War III easily sold over 5 million.

Shipped about 5.2 million by 2012 according to Sony. I can accept that as 5+ million sold for one of the games in the series, though not really "easily." So I stand corrected on that one point.

Pretty sure these aren't shipped numbers, although the distinction would matter little as the vast majority of what is shipped is sold right now.

Edit: Wait or is House conflating the actual sold in one sentence to shipped in the next?

Seems weird considering that is their biggest territory and the lack of a Japanese launch.
They have less pressure there, though, continental Europe is friendly territory, Microsoft isn't launching in as many territories there, and they too seemed to have prioritized the UK and NA.

TLoU came out in 2013.

Naughty Dog has 2 teams. One just finished TLOU and is working on the DLC. The other hasn't released anything since Uncharted 3. There's more than likely some overlap between the two teams at lower levels, but the UC3 team has, more than likely, been working on this game since at least middle of last year.

Happy to be one of the 2.1 million! This system is turning me into a Sony fan, no doubt. I'm even considering a Vita this christmas.

They've put up a 'thank you' video, euro-launch focussed, with footage from the different euro events:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbB_yQ0vrf4

All their promotional stuff lately, for real. Makes me feel like I am actually apart of some bigger culture, and not just some dumb college kid who plays Persona and Demon's Souls.

Just not capable of following up the PSP's library.

Sadly. : / Was actually my thought when Vita was announced: "You mean it's gonna be SRPG heaven again, with better hardware? Sign me up!"

It is very probably that XO has very similar numbers TBH. 2M is good but the Wii U is the big loser it seems.

I'm thinking around 1.5 mil for the Xbox One.

But yeah, I still can't believe how much these systems are crushing the Wii U; especially the Knack > Mario news.

Naughty Dog has 2 teams.

He said "Naughty Dog," not "Naughty Dog's one team."

Now, as far as having 3 years to 2014 and 2 teams, I have addressed these points as best I could so far. We'll see what happens. It depends on what their goals are. If it's just "have a big seller for 2014 holidays," that's one thing. If it's "hit one out of the park a-la Uncharted 2 and prevent franchise fatigue," that's another. I don't think they want another Uncharted 3 even though it did great commercially... it was a bit rushed. (No, 3 years including sharing personnel and a new console coming out =/= 3 years in other circumstances.)

First of all, congratulations to Sony!!

Now, MS, do you feel high stress from your competitor? If yes, then it is better to try your hard to deliver good exclusive games to us Xbox fans like what you did between 2005 and 2009. In this case, we will still support you.

Sony PR is only referring to their estimates for sell-through to consumers in all the figures they're giving out.

700k in Europe? Guess they couldn't produce more, because the demand is definitely there.
yeah and that's even with production ramped up in japan. still, that's a lot of units essentially ready for day one in each market within such a short window. especially compared to the manufacturing ramp up of the ps3. pretty good showing when put in perspective of other recent consoles.

Damn. So the UK might not see the same kind of drop as the Xbone did in week 2?

Week two might be bad, but the week after that and the final week before Xmas should see a lot of stock if MCV are right and they are now air freighting units to the UK.

700k only in both EU and OZ?

this is ridicolous and explains why we couldn't find any non preordered Ps4 at launch. New shipments arriving this friday btw

Sony really wants to take back NA.

Where are Nintendo/Microsoft Black Friday sales press release? Are they still going to issue any statement to the public after PS4 2.1M sales PR?

Eager to know the sales of Wii U and Xbox One.

The situation is a bit silly in Australia. All the big games retailers have massive signs outside shop and banners on their websites saying "GET YOUR XBOX ONE NOW" while the PS4 section is off in some lonely corner with a little sign saying "wait till 2014 lol".

Halo 4 still outsold every PS3 title including the CODs

Halo 4 has yet to outsell GT5 worldwide. Nor did it outsell any of the recent Call of Duty's on PS3. Not even close. Stop lying.

In the U.S, it did. Sorry should have clarified.

No, I am not "way" off. I and II did not reach 5 million, unless you add in $10-apiece HD rereleases from years later. III did, barely, as I acknowledged above, though these are likely shipped numbers. In addition, the story hole and franchise fatigue points stand. Then there is Ascension.

I think Xbox One stood at 1.3~1.4million by the end of November considering lack of launch countries/underwhelming sales in EU/yield issues. This will give PS4 about 0.7million lead in the race.

However, I still think Xbox One had a successful launch especially after their DRM reverse, PR disaster, FOUR HUNDRED NIGHTY-NINE price tag.

I'd guesstimate XO is around 1.6-1.7m now on the higher end.

Last week's euro sales for XO were probably <=100k (UK was 20k). So assuming 500k or 600k last week in NA, we'd be at 1.6-1.7m. And that might be a high estimate for NA last week.

I'd expect PR from MS after Black Friday week if/when they pass 2m, but if takes very long after Sony's I think they won't bother.

Ya, much smaller market. But HK is the one to watch, because we don't know how much demand from Mainland China.
250k-350k all together is my guess.
I live in HK and many of us had that fear when the PS4 release date for HK was first announced (because this kind of things happens a lot, baby formula, electronic gadgets, AAA video games, you name it, all bought in HK in bulk and shipped back to China, causing shortage in HK).

But we are now only two weeks away from the official launch (17th Dec) and no sign of any shortage whatsoever. Sony stores are still taking pre-orders, so are other electrical retailers. Either SCEAsia is well prepared and there is plenty of stock to go around, or demand isn't that high at all (though I'm sure it will do well).

I know a mom and pop store owner pretty well and he's also taking pre-orders for the PS4. When I went to pay for mine, he said I don't have to put down any payment (although other customers have to pay upfront) because he's sure there will be plenty of PS4 and he can guarantee I'll get mine. Just my personal observation, mind you.

Kudos to Sony indeed. Good for them to see how much the positive buzz of the past months has actually translated into sales for them.

Still, I can't help but feel bummed out that all of these 2.1 million PS4 owners (assuming everyone bought one to use and not to sell them that is) bought a system mostly on the promise of better times/games to come while Nintendo's unsuccesful Wii U launch was partly blamed by the press on a weak launch lineup. In a fair and just world, a fantastic game like Super Mario 3D World would have sold 2.1 million copies (and Wii U's) as well, but alas.

As I said before, even as a happy Playstation (1, 2, 3) owner I can't think of any reason to run out and buy a PS4 so soon after launch. None of the launch titles are enticing me, but it appears others aren't having that same problem. I still wonder what all of these mass market buyers are seeing / feeling that I am not, except perhaps to be able to follow the masses and play the most modern version (not counting PC) of big franchises like CoD and Battlefield.

It all seems to boil down to a vague underbelly feeling of zeitgeist hipness or momentum that makes these movements happen and that make people face the same direction. It especially keeps amazing me how fickle these things appear to be (with Nintendo's problematic Wii to Wii U transition, and Microsoft's problems with policies and their message to customers that allowed Sony to get a head start, being two good examples of how fickle such attention is from the mainstream masses.)

To be clear: I have nothing against Sony - or Microsoft - doing well, but I can't fully hide my feelings of "some of this success should befall on Nintendo as well because of their recent great games" either. In any case it will be fascinating to see how all of this will turn out in the long run and how this will impact game development (especially in Japan).

It's simple really. Customers want a next generation system that is guaranteed to have a fantastic version of all the major titles released over the next 5 years. The PS4 offers that at the lowest price, anyone buying one can be guaranteed that they'll get their money's worth over the next 5 years.

They don't want an underpowered and overpriced last generation system that is host to the odd niche (though utterly fantastic) Nintendo title every 6 months. People don't want the GameCube reincarnate and at least the Gamecube had competitive performance and pricing going for it, the Wii U has neither. Gamers like myself that know they need to play the likes of 3D World at some point will simply pick one up when retailers start to fire sale it for ~£100 just like the GameCube.

Thanks!

Ah man...when i was walking out of Gamestop with my PS4 and on my way home i felt like i was on Cloud 9, it was such an intense natural high which i had not felt for many many years. I guess the unexpected nature of how it all unfolded that night was a real roller coaster for my emotions and to come home with a PS4 after all that was pure bliss man. I couldn't believe it! I couldn't even take it out of the box for some hours because i just wanted to look at the PS4 box sitting next to my home theater ..i just wanted to soak up every bit of joy just marveling at the fact i had a PS4 sitting at home in front of me!!

I hope everyone else that desperately wants their PS4 gets one soon! I totally understand the feeling if wanting it and not being able to find one.

Haha, that sounds lovely in a strange way. On my way home from Gamestop I carried the bag with pride, though deep down nervous about getting robbed, forgetting it on the bus or just accidentally dropping it. My mind was racing just like yours, really astonishing how a machine made me feel like a child on christmas.
