Last night on a skyscraper in Shanghai while watching elevators for invading American pigs... I felt the first sign of "Left Stick Leprosy" with a thin sliver of rubber releasing its self under my thumb. Well. Hell.

So i picked up a second DS4 today. First thing I noticed was that the texture of the two DS4 sticks was completely different from the new pad to the failing one that came with my PS4. The degrading DS4 had a much coarser/textured finish to the sticks whereas this new pad has less texture on the rubber. There is a more pronounced seam in the rubber around the edge of the new sticks and a seam on the bottom of the sticks that is visible if you push each directly upward. Neither seam in the rubber is particularly evident on the old, degrading DS4 sticks. However, the big difference is definitely that the old pad's sticks are far, far more textured (were is probably more like it as they now are falling apart/smooth).

Who knows if this new pad will hold up, but it seems like the build spec of the sticks is very different from the controller that was packed in with my PS4.

Okay so I have a Blue DS4 and a Black DS4, 1 came with the PS4.

I am really not happy with the sticks on my blue DS4, nothing to do with build quality, the tightness in the aiming and control is alot more lose than my black DS4....

Problem is, i kicked out the packaging as didnt notice this until a few hours gameplay, thought it was in my head. Anyone know if Sony will be able to replace this?

got my second ds4 from tru for $40 all numbers are the same except for the one on the 4th row it is now 4-473-498-11 f1 instead of 498-01 g

i also see that the rubber on the new one has l slightly different texture as noted above me its a bit smother

i would be surprised if this new one doesnt have the same problem though i would think it would be a few more months till we see new batches

ill report back if the new one does or doesnt have the same issue

still ZERO evidence of wear on either of my DS4's...both been used heavily since NA launch (considering the battery life on this thing is such a joke)...

i have a blue DS4 coming from amazon.co.uk this week so we shall see how that holds up

Just talked to support about it. They told me I'd have to send it in and it could take weeks for me to get it back. Screw that. I'll try contacting Amazon.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Do you have to send your current one back? I don't want to be without a controller for however long.

Of course.

Do you think Amazon will do something different? I am genuinely curious.

Got my controller replaced at the store today without any fuss. Same texture on the sticks as the one I replaced. I told em I'll be coming in next week for my next DS4 replacement appointment.

They are gonna have a big problem with this #DS4Rubbergate once more consoles are released into the wild.

I flat out refuse to buy extra rubber thingys to spare my sticks from use, hell they are ment to be used right. That's what we pay for. ;)

I can't imagine it being anything other than a bad batch.

*I've seen plenty of people say they have been using their DS4 for quite some time without running into any problems with the rubber on the sticks.

*So far i think i've only seen people mention problems with the rubber on the left stick, never the right stick.

The left stick gets far more uptime than the right in most games.

Pretty sure it's very close in shooters (which make the largest part of the available launch games) and even if the left sticks get used more i don't think the difference would be so big that the left sticks get worn and the right sticks stay totally fine.

No.. sounds like a bad batch to me.

The rubber feels really cheap. Try feeling a 360, One, or PS3 controller and then a PS4 controller. This might come back to haunt Sony.

I tried making another post on Reddit in order to get more exposure so that Sony will fix this problem. Maybe they'll believe me this time?

Same smoother texture, same FCC ID (i think that's the number). Formerly had a 498-01 g, now 498-11 f1. There's another thread where people posted all the numbers adn several people had the 11 f1 controller and still had problems. However, the sticks look different enough that, while I'm not getting my hopes up, I think there's a chance that they might not be as prone to rapid decomposition.

I didn't remove it so the mods must have. I tried messaging them but nobody has responded.

I looked at other removed post and usually auto-moderator responds within a couple seconds about why the post was removed, but this isn't happening for me. Does this mean the post was removed manually by a mod or what?

I tried making a new one. Let's see how long this one lasts.

Edit: 25 seconds. Must mean that it was auto-removed, and the mods must be busy.

Every time I've ever emailed one of the tip lines for kotaku or IGN nobody every responds. Is there a way to cut out the middleman and email someone directly?

Aren't some of those guys NeoGAF regulars? like jschrier, and a few others? Maybe PM them and see if they'd do a story on it? Otherwise, I'm not sure.

I have two ds4's and the rubber on the top of the left thumbstick on one has worn down significantly. The ds4 that came with the system has barely been used at all so it is still in good shape.
For reference I played through the Killzone campaign and have been playing bf4 multiplayer and resogun for 2-3 hours a day since launch, more on week ends.

I'm not sure how I would find their profiles in order to PM them. I tried doing an advanced search with the username ' jschrier' but nothing showed up.

I luckily have not had any problems. I have the one that comes with the launch console, and an extra. Both purchased through Amazon, and used daily. Grinding Knack, KZ MP, and Assassins BF.

Usage includes my 4 year old daughters lunch and dinner greasy hands. Maybe that is keeping them moisturized. LOL.

Maybe there are lot numbers or serials that can tell something.

A moderator from /r/gaming responded. Apparently it was auto-moderator and he's not sure why it happened. I deleted the old one and created another, hopefully it will be OKed soon.

Edit: Screw it, I'll try again tomorrow. I don't have the time right now to babysit this thread.

Okay... I think we got a problem here guys... I've posted before in this thread saying how my dualshock was fine.. well not so much anymore.. I've got some flaking on my left stick and the right stick is smooth now... I think with enough use everyone is going to have this problem.. Sony needs to change the material.. this is ridiculous.. And Sony has to act soon, otherwise they're going to have a PR nightmare on their hands.

Fuck, man. I'm getting my PS4 on the 18th and this is the thing that worries me the most. I hope they got their act together for the batch they're shipping across Asia.

Saw a demo station on the weekend with a flaking RIGHT stick. Left stick was smoothed over.

I'm gonna hold off on my PS4 till Sony sorts this out.

Invest in some stick covers just in case.. that's what I'm gonna do.. better than spending another 60 dollars, or waiting for Sony to send me a new one.

Today while playing BF4 noticed my right stick is flaking. Crazy but same thing happened with my PS3 at launch. (Bluetooth kept going out on my DS3).

Might try to call Amazon tomorrow. Crazy stuff, my controller looks great and has less than 50 hours use. Left stick looks fine.

Both my controllers' left sticks have started flaking/peeling! Ugh! I got one from gamestop and the other with my console from sam's club! Would I get a replacement? If so, how much of a pain is the process going to be?

Best Buy's two year-warranty thing said that they cover controller problems, but I don't know if this technically counts, since the controller isn't actually broken.

...I'm wondering only hypothetically. My controllers are fine right now.

Of course.

I got $60 credit when I complained about mine. So bought another and got to keep my one that is peeling. Now I just use that controller for my kid. It honestly looks like crap. But still at least it got replaced
