Destiny may require co-op play for end-game activities (Story can be completed solo)

I am more concerned if there will be any microtransactions, than required multiplayer.

Activison bet the house on Destiny, guarantee there will be tons of microtransactions. This game sounds like my dream game though and Bungie is my favorite dev of all time so I have a feeling I'm going to be spending a ton of money on this game.

Yeah, but it all depends on the microtransactions and how the game is balanced around them.

They were actually in the first trailer under their traditional MMO name: (Raid: Depth of Darkness)

Generally the idea in MMOs is to let solo players play the game (while other people are still around in their world) and then slowly onboard them more and more to group play in an effort to keep them around and get them into the core loop of what an MMO is about.

The standard MMO end game is about PvP and large group raids (I believe this is 8 players based on their statements in Destiny), which give you nice loot and these days, often a fair amount of story but not in an overbearing way that makes replaying it painful.

It sounds like a raid type thing, if people are gonna complain they can't do a huge difficult thing like that solo that doesn't sound like part of the main story anyway... I don't even know.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
man dont force this crap on me
they said its fine and you can play solo but now i HAVE to play coop

latest info about this game is really worrisome

Good lord. No one is being FORCED into anything. The game has a fully soloable primary campaign, just like every other FPS Bungie has released. It just happens to ALSO have other stuff designed for multiplayer. This is not a big deal.

My only worry is that there will objectives to complete and that I'll get teamed up with randoms who don't pay attention to what they have to do and just go around shooting like they do in all of the other objective based shooters I've played.

So, it sounds as if it won’t just be a case of these missions being too difficult to tackle alone, but rather that being part of a team will be a requirement. If you were planning on playing the role of a nomad, this might come as a bit of a blow.

Indeed it does come as a blow. Let me play my own way, don't force me into these 'party up' missions. This is one of the things I am currently hating about playing FFXIV. Asshats complaining, talking shit, holding me up and ruining my experience with story quests.

An MMO is an interesting choice of video game for somebody who doesn't want to interact with other people.

If you are desperate for a good Final Fantasy game, I can imagine why people would play it even if they don't like interacting with other people. Though now there is Bravely Default as well. :p

I was in the beta and loved the game itself, so I wanted to play it. I have no problem interacting with other people, but when you have to wait forever to get grouped up and then you have to deal with people who talk shit, refuse to continue and even tries to get everyone killed in the middle of an hour long dungeon, it kind of wears on the appeal. But in one sense you are right. I have never been an MMO guy and shit like this only reinforces that.

I hated that stuff in Borderlands 2, it's one of the reasons I actually prefer BL1 despite BL2 being superior in many ways.

Well not having to design encounters to work for both solo players and multiple players does give them more free reign to design more interesting content. However I doubt that it is the reason for the restriction.

Fairly certain this game is going to be on wow levels in my case if they have legit 8 man raids... Going to need to either start or find a guild.

Going to be funny seeing the bungie forums filled with LFG or guild postings etc.

Don't really know why people are surprised about this.
Assuming they are oblivious about the game and not just shitposting.

Anywho I'm pretty stocked about this as long as it's not "defeat a superboss!" like found in Borderlands. I expect dungeons/raids.

I just don't understand why someone would play an MMO if they hate partying up/playing with other people. There are plenty of single player games that I think look cool but I know have a lot of tedious BS in them that I don't want to do to get to the cool parts, so I don't play them. It's really that simple.

It really gets old playing games like this with horrible single player gamers who do nothing but whine and complain the entire time you're in a party about how 'this isn't what i signed up for. '

Pretty much the reason why I quit playing FFXIV.

I hope not, but if true I just want it to be seamless... but I can't see how it would be. Imagine getting to the end mission then having to wait for it to match you up with some random people.

So raid content will be too hard to solo? Sounds like an odd thing to complain about in an FPS that has been billed as a multiplayer experience from the get-go. They already "hedged" on that aspect by making the story mode completely solo-able. Why should they hedge on this? There are loads of people who rather enjoy playing co-op missions and find them more rewarding than their solo counterparts. Essentially, by ignoring co-op, you're casting aside one of the game's core design elements. Why does it come as a shock that there is some content specifically designed around the main feature of the game?

Such complaints sound like complaining that you can't play an MMO offline, and can't solo 40-man raids. Not every part of a game that's designed for multiplayer is going to work for people who don't want to play with others. I'd suggest that those people should limit the games they purchase to single player games only, and accept that not every game will (or should) cater to their specific interests.

Also, anyone claiming they can't find people to play with needs to go to the massive PSN ID/Gamertag exchange threads. You're on a forum full of hardcore gamers--it's pretty much a no-brainer. /rant

Makes sense to me. Considering they said there will be main story and side missions, I imagine there will be coop side missions right away while the story will remain SP.

But I also imagine at some point the crafted story will end and you will be left in the world to play at will. Including the coop side missions.

Jolly cooperation is the future!

I don't get why this is a big deal. The game was always marketed as a co-op experience. I'd get the frustration if it wasn't but...

And if you have an online connection at all, which should be easy enough, then I'm sure there will be randoms matchmaking anyway. Only people this affects is those with no internet connection on their consoles.

I have never complained once when partied up. I always remain courteous to others, but have found partying up to be left wanting. My experience has been one of elitist pricks complaining about how others play, stalling in the middle of dungeons, healers not healing and trying to get everyone killed... yeah. Not my idea of fun, but I am still enjoying the game otherwise.

so 2 years from now the game becomes a Frisbee if I I want to REPLAY this because I do replay my old games.

who here has not replayed Halo 1 solo campaign years after the game's release?

who here has not replayed Half-Life 1 or 2 years later?

I'm out, fuck Destiny

Most MMos have multiple character slots.

This is also not a standard single player/multiplayer split game like halo, or a standard single player only game like half life.
Optional end game bosses and raids are what bungie is talking about here, not the main story that has a main ending, which they say is soloable.

I never play with a mic so the other people on my "team" are always like NPCs anyway. This is in no way close to a deal breaker for me.

Well this is fucking lame. Sure I'll do it on the first playthrough but I don't want to be blocked from replaying the game when I feel in the mood for a solo second or third playthrough.

This so much. I don't want my casual playthroughs dictated by the amount of people online. Or have to deal with other players when I want to explore the levels.

urk

butthole fishhooking yes
Tyson is 100% talking about Raids. "End game" as in "I've completed story and played a whole bunch of other stuff and I'm looking specifically for a super challenging and optional cooperative experience." There are still a bunch of activity types and content you can tackle if you're not looking for that exact type of experience.

It's online-only game, so there is nothing really special if they require something like that or not. Offline option would always be great and welcomed, of course (I don't mind online things, but I generally don't like the idea of online-only games), but I will give Bungie a pass on that. Can't wait to play this game eventually.

These games shouldn't be supported anyway since the major publishers want all games to be like this and the Division. It's a way for them to still get their always online DRM without a massive riot from the internet like we saw when a console manufacturer tried to do it. You want to stop this now before it becomes a problem? Don't buy this game.

I'm sure people will moan, but at the core Destiny is an online game.

I'm glad to see Bungie embracing the online world, and creating a game like this.

Read this people.

Anyone wanting to run through the storyline solo will be able to, they already said so. I think there was even a thread on it the other day.

Major letdown if I won't be allowed to beat the campaign by myself. Part of the appeal of Destiny is (well, was) I could run into other players in this universe but I wouldn't be forced to do anything with them if I didn't want to.
