PAL Charts - Week 52, 2013

jvm

Gamasutra.
Overall UK revenues (only software) increased due to growing digital sales:

_72012606_digital_sales_624.gif

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-25559821

ERA usually uses Chart-Track data, the digital number should be estimated though.

We should probably get a better report about the gaming market from mcvuk in the next few days, including hardware, accessories and so on.
Last year's chart from MCV UK mixed up the hardware and accessory segments (or something like that), so best to double check what they claim.

Also, MCV UK reporting on the figures:
http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/uk-digital-game-sales-overtake-physical-in-2013/0126322

I believe we can now say this, based on these figures:

UK Retail Software
December 2011: £341.0mm
December 2012: £245.3mm (-28%)
December 2013: £270.0mm (+10%)

UK Retail software:
Full year 2011: £1.421B
Full year 2012: £1.045B (-26%)
Full year 2013: £1.015B (-2.9%)

It is at least worth considering that retail has turned a corner, for the moment, and will experience a brief period of expansion during the beginning of this generation. The really interesting question is how long any such expansion might last.

Germany week 52.

01 (03) PS3 GRAN TURISMO 6 (SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT)
02 (05) PS3 GRAND THEFT AUTO V (TAKE 2)

FIFA 14 (PS4) (ELECTRONIC ARTS) and WII JUST DANCE 2014 (UBISOFT) should be 03 and 04 as they are on the side of that article (in week 50 it was the same). Maybe Bruno gets the full charts.

I'm happy Call of Duty is declining. Maybe it will stop this horrible trend of annualising games.

It won't. The annualization isn't the problem. Just look at BF4. That's in decline too.

If anything, releasing every other year will accelerate its decline by allowing their competitors to take marketshare.

The way COD is set up with multiple studios working on the game is the best thing it has going for it. There's internal competition going on there as Treyarch strives to make a better game than Infinity Ward.(and vice versa)

The dog in COD Ghosts is awesome BTW
:)

Thanks to this, I can extrapolate how much these games actually sold week per week, as well as how much they sold per platform (I mean, with the last shares from Guardian ;_;)

I'm currently trying to extrapolate week per week numbers for each game, but I noticed numbers are higher than what estimated before. Heck, the extrapolated FIFA 14 debut (924,240) is higher than the debut extrapolated back at debut (836,000). The only explanation I can think of is that the Entertainment chart include the 10% of the market that GFK doesn't count.

EDIT: Just verified

2,656,763 --> 90% of that --> 2,391,087
2,391,087 / 2,87453936712 = 831,816

Yeah, those sounds like the real numbers, after all.

What should I do? Extrapolations starting from 90% or from 100%?

IMHO should be from 100% so we can know the final sales..

You know what? I'm doing both! 90% and 100%

I'll continue tomorrow.

I suspect the round off errors managed to catch up. When the numbers are close then a 0.5% here and there matters.

I tried everything to understand what's possibly wrong in COD & FIFA numbers, but I can state that, so far, I found it impossible that COD Week 4 = FIFA Week 10 + 6,000, FIFA Week 13 = COD Week 7 + 17,000 & FIFA Week 14 = COD Week 8 + 2,000 at the same time, given the % increases / decreases. Absolutely impossible. I'll give it another try in the next days, but...it looks IMPOSSIBLE XD So, sorry for the errors, gentlemen.

I'd like to try to extrapolate GTA5 weekly numbers, the next time. Yes, even in the weeks when the GFK PR didn't give any number at all. I still don't completely know how, but I'll try.

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I...I think I just cracked the code. GFK didn't state how much GTAV increased / decreased in its 10th week (Xbox One's debut week), while they gave % for every other week. This is what I've done. The formula is the same as with the other games, but used slightly differently.

W1 = D
W2 (-83%) = 0.17D
W3 (-34%) = (0.17x0.66)D = 0.1122x
W4 (-53%) = (0.1122x0.47)D = 0.052734

...

W10 (no %) = 0.01399686107xyD, with y = the % for Week 10
W11 (+92%) = (0.01399686107x1.92xy)D

...

W15 (-5%) - (0.03536351516xy)D

At this point, I sum all these terms, derivating from percentages, and I extrapolate D in this way

D = LTD / sum of all percentages

For both 90% and 100%

But, in this case, we have the debut. From PAL Charts, Week 38 Thread

Upweighted to 100%

01 (NE) GRAND THEFT AUTO V (TAKE 2) - 2.250.000

First day sales - 1.570.000
First week sales - 2.250.000

Platform breakdown:

Xbox 360 - 1.282.500
PS3 - 967.500

Using this with the 100% LTD (3,670,234) and the 90% version (2,205,000) with the 90% LTD (3,303,211), we have

y = 1,10054904677

Week 10 (+10%), then.

So...

Grand Theft Auto V

Week 1 - 2,025,000 / 2,250,000
Week 2 (-83%) - 344,250 / 382,500
Week 3 (-34%) - 227,205 / 252,400
Week 4 (-53%) - 106,786 / 118,651
Week 5 (-31%) - 73,683 / 81,870
Week 6 (-28%) - 53,051 / 58,946
Week 7 (-13%) - 46,155 / 51,283
Week 8 (-31%) - 31,847 / 35,385
Week 9 (-11%) - 28,344 / 31,493
Week 10 (+10%) - 31,178 / 34,642
Week 11 (+92%) - 59,862 / 66,513
Week 12 (+19%) - 71,236 / 79,151
Week 13 (-40%) - 42,741 / 47,490
Week 14 (+94%) - 82,918 / 92,131
Week 15 (-5%) - 78,772 / 87,525

Week 1 - 2,025,000 / 2,250,000
W1 X360 (56%) - 1,134,000 / 1,260,000
W1 PS3 (43%) - 870,750 / 967,500

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

There must have been big shipments for both PS4 and One, all their multiplatform SKUs increased in places compared to last week.

3DS down to 2 titles in the top 40. More next gen releases might knock those two out as well. Nintendo needs to do something soon there . And in that context Wii U not having any titles isn't surprising.

Also, in a few places, the price of Xbox one games have dropped.

You can get most X1 games under the golden £40 mental barrier now.

Sony needs to do something about this retailer gouging.

I'm not sure, sales are down 50% this week, next gen might just win out from being newer. No idea about splits but if FIFA sold 62k this week total then I doubt the PS4 version is earth shattering numbers.

They need to start launching their titles at £29.99, I reckon. A bit more western support wouldn't go amiss either, but I guess that's out of their hands.

Big jump for Xbox One Forza + Fifa... possibly due to Xbox one selling decently this week. WOW at PS4 Fifa being number 1!

Looks like the market is transitioning to next gen.

Looking at the All Formats, there are 4 3DS titles in top 40. 6 in the Full Price one. Even if the situation isn't that good, all those SKUs for single titles are making it appear much worse right now than what it really is.

I think it's too late for the UK for Nintendo. They're missing the right cards as SmokyDave pointed. They should just manage the thing and focus their ressources on the other EU markets.

I played FIFA 14 on the PS3 at my cousin's. The last one I played was 4 or so years ago and it's so damn good. Might be my first PS4 purchase once it's back in stock.

Overall UK revenues (only software) increased due to growing digital sales:

ERA usually uses Chart-Track data, the digital number should be estimated though.

We should probably get a better report about the gaming market from mcvuk in the next few days, including hardware, accessories and so on.
Does this include iOS/Android/Steam? And if so, does iOS/Android include all Apps or only apps categorised as 'games' on the store?

Happy to see X1 gain a big bump in the last week. Keep growing, X1. You don't need to outsell PS4 to be a successful console.

Are retailers not practically giving away the Vita now and still nothing charts.

I'm wondering just how well 3DS / 2DS is selling. Software sales are not good enough.
