So I took the advice of you all and took back the Nexus 5 for the G2.

Best advice ever given. Not to say the N5 was a bad phone, as it was certainly nice. I enjoyed matte finish, and I still think it's a tad more of a preferable size in comparison, but the slightly dull wash over the colors along with the rocky vibrations left a bad taste. After much thought(because I really did enjoy it mostly), I went with the majority gaf opinion and returned it for the G2. Right off, I could tell the colors were much better. They had more pop to them without being completely saturated. Also, it wasn't as bulky as I thought it would be. I think they are close in size, it's just that the G2 has less bezel and more screen. Also, the power button is a non issue so far. Having it on the back wasn't my concern as far as using it, but I thought it may be accidentally pressed. Everything has been smooth sailing. The hard plastic is kinda terrible coming from phone with either metal or matte, but I guess it can't have everything I want. Also, the battery hasn't moved much at all. Good sign of things to come.

Overall, I'm damn happy with the switch. Thanks gaf :)

How can you stand this though?

I'm thinking of getting a new phone, but I can't decide between the LG G2, Note 3 or the HTC One. I would like a phone with a good battery life and a good ppi. I'm using a Nexus 4 and I'd like to get something that would be a good step up.

I'm on ATT, BTW.

on AT&T? Note 3.

depends on the carrier/oem build, some of them let you disable some of those.

I've recently discovered the greatness that is Xposed + Gravity Box. Custom roms features on a rooted stock rom <3

If you have the G2 I recommend rooting it and downloading the G2 xposed app. You can change tons of settings like the nav and status bar, notification area, and soft buttons. Here is what my status and notification area looks like now:

You can even turn all the toggles off or make it a two finger drag, but I like them on.

Plus having a recent apps button instead of menu is real nice.

I somehow managed a little over 6 hours on my One earlier this week. I can usually get 4.5-5 on a full discharge. This was way over average.

I never get less than 5.5hrs. Almost 7 hours amazed me, lol.

Get a Note 3. Killer specs, great screen and the battery is incredible.

bastard, used like 70 cent worth of stuff while I was sleeping for facebook, youtube etc updates, didn't know it would do that if not on wi-fi ^^

I guess checking "restrict background data" fixes this and it only updates while wi-fi in connected right?

First S805 device to release in May/June according to Qualcomm. My money is on the GS5 and the Z Ultra successor. The HTC M8 will release with S800 or possibly even S600 if they go for a Q1 launch. The story is still the same, HTC are having trouble procuring S800 at a decent cost with such poor volumes. Makes sense when you consider Sony had the same problem getting S600 for the Xperia Z/ZL and at the time their volume was quite low, especially in the high end market.

I made a list of potential buyers for HTC:

Lenovo
Asus
Acer
Sony
Microsoft

The latter two would be using HTC to leverage the pre-existing relationships with US carriers more than anything else, so it would have to be going cheap. The first three are computing companies without a big smartphone brand or presence. Asus and Lenovo make the most sense to me.

Have Sony really had such a bit turnaround to go from struggling to get the S600 for the Z/ZL to being, in your opinion, one of the two frontrunners to be the first to get the S805?

Yes. They were one of the first companies to get S800 for the Z Ultra as well, but in low volumes with a high price as a test. The S800 for the Z1 wasn't locked in until quite late, around December 2012 when Sony proved they had a place in the high end with decent volumes after the S and T.

Umm interesting. Could HTC try something similiar? Get a low volume at high cost for new phone and try to prove they can bounce back or have they just given up?

Their margins are already too low to support a high price SoC. They may do t anyway as a flagship with S600 in 2014 would be dead in the water IMO. But while they struggle to get their costs under control it would be tough to justify an increase in costs.

What they could do is go all in with S800/805 for all their devices and meet the volume requirement by only making S800/805 devices.

Sounds reasonable, surely would be better to concentrate efforts on a few key products rather than a host of mediocre ones. 2014 will be an interesting year...

The fuck is Knox?

It's two things. Security software and also it locks the bootloader on all new Samsung phones. You can still root with it, but it trips a fuse on your phone so it will always show you flashed a custom rom. There is no way to get rid of the bootloader part once you have it. If you have a Samsung phone with 4.3 you probably already have it.

Ooooh, gonna keep an eye on that. I've got my Z Ultra now and love the size, but it was always my plan to upgrade to either its successor or the new flagship this year. Don't suppose you've heard anything on either timeframe or specs on the Z Ultra successor, have you? I'm very hopeful they'll put the same camera as the flagship in it.

Anyone got the Google Search update today yet?

In particular, anyone got it and been brave enough to install it on a Nexus 7 running GEL? The last version reduced the grid size from 6x6 to 5x5 and I had to uninstall it.

So I missed the PSA that unlocking the bootloader on a Nexus 10 (running 4.4.2 KitKat) will result in a bootloop by default. argh?!1?!

Play it safe and always reboot. Annoying, though.

Xposed is simply amazing. It's a shame I only became of aware the existence of this framework a day ago.

Fucking finally. Play Services has been wakelocking my work phone like a bitch. Sometimes I take it out of my jacket pocket and it's hot as fuck and the battery is down to like 10% for no reason.

Seriously. This update is most welcome. Play Services was a grim reaper for battery life, capriciously deciding whose battery lives and dies today.

So my SIII was updated by Verizon to 4.3 two days ago. Since then all haptic feedback when typing has disappeared. It still works for other buttons and functions when I turn that on, but not when typing, even when I turn the function on within individual keyboard settings (tried both Google typing and SwiftKey). Any ideas?

I got my HTC One yesterday and I love it so far. One I got Nova Launcher on it it's so godly. Battery life has been amazing so far too.

Pretty happy that I chose it over the Nexus 5 at this point.

I got the 2014 edition of the Galaxy Note 10.1 over the holidays and I love it. Yeah, it's a bit jittery, but overall I think it's a fantastic device. It's my first tablet, and I'm glad I waited a few years before jumping on board the tablet train, it was worth the wait. After messing around with my home screen, I think I finally found a look that I enjoy thanks to Nova Launcher and circle battery widget (minus the circle):

Part of the reason I dig it so much as a device (and why I got it in the first place) is because of the S-Pen/Wacom digitizer tech. I've been sketching and drawing on this thing like crazy, works like a charm.

Need help with a problem I have been having the past two weeks or so. Anytime my nexus 4 is connected to a wifi network (any wifi network), the internet and data is slow as shit. I looked around the web and have come across people with similar problems, but I haven't see any solutions.

Anyone have any idea what is going on?

After putting some time into it, I'm really loving my LG G2. Such a good decision over the N5 if give the choice. Digging the lock screen transitions as well. I still haven't even fired up the camera though.

I'm always down. Thanks.

Glad you like it. Digging mine too. Battery life is noticably better than my One. No more putting the phone on standby and 2 hours later I lose 10%.

The battery is pretty darn amazing. I'm almost positive it doesn't move at all when the screen is off lol. One thing I was surprised by was how light it was for not being a "pure android" device. After uninstalling some of the apps that were loaded on there, it's extremely thin. Just feels like pure android with a little spunk thrown in to liven things up. Also, double tapping to wake/sleep the device is really, really nice. The vibration is smooth and consistent too, which was another small issue I had with the N5.

I wish the damn Play Music widget wasn't so damn basic and crappy compared to others though, but that is another issue I'll take up with Google...

Battery life is much improved with the latest Services update.

seems the same to me on Nexus 4, msm_hsic_host is still causing pretty hefty idle drain.

dunno if Nexus 7 has improved yet though.
