Media Create Sales: Week 1, 2014 (Dec 30 - Jan 05)

Phantasy Star Nova will hurt really bad when neither SEGA itself nor Atlus publish it in the West.
Atlus brought over a anime fighting game that never had a chance to sell more than 8k and conception 2, they'll bring over Phantasy star Nova if Sega lets them (and there is 0 reasons why they wouldn't). Wouldn't be surprised if Sega themselves brought it over though.

I hope Atlus USA do the work. I mean, SEGA now has a brand now that makes money localizing niche stuff. If they have benefits releasing stuff like Conception II, why not Yakuza/Phantasy Star?

And then they'll bring the game to Europe in less than 9 months...

Yeah, we theorized that Atlus would take over some of the neglected SEGA franchises in the West and Nova being kinda a good fit would make it the first "test".

For some reason I thought SEGA didn't even localize Phantasy Star Portable 2 but it was just Infinity that was Japan-only. Maybe not that unlikely. I still hope Atlus handles the localization though.

The Vita sales aren't anything to write home about, whats impressive is the combined number with PS3 and the fact that the games are sold out. At the same time, many games are facing shortages so that is more an indication of retailers misjudging demand rather than the game being super popular.

200k isn't impressive for game on Vita which also launched on PS3 ?

Yes, FFX Vita sales are very impressive. An hd port on a userbase that small sold 200k and that was because it sold out. At the very least it guarantees a FF12 Vita. I doubt Square has anything besides that lined up considering their smartphone obsession.

I agree, it's holding up really well compared to the PS3 version, which reminds me of the Dragon's Crown performance.

But let's hope it's FFXII:IZJS. And this time really international.

I don't know if this was posted here or not. Siliconera has the full sales figure + shipment percentage of FF X/X-2 sales on VITA.

As per the article, the total stands as(Media Create Numbers, Two week sales) :

Final Fantasy X/X-2 PS3 = 225,448 units sold, 95.52% of its shipment
Final Fantasy X/X-2 Twin Pack VITA = 182,170 copies, 97.26% of its shipment

They also got the individual sales for each game on VITA.

Final Fantasy X = 31,775, 97.26% of its shipment
Final Fantasy X-2 = 16,355, 84.12% of its shipment

Numbers are pretty impressive to me. Especially on the VITA.

Source

Impressive numbers for Vita, especially considering the games are also available on PS3. Both PS3 and Vita versions have been (finally) in stock for a couple of days on Amazon and the Vita Twin Pack has been ranking higher since then.

Very curious to see how these games perform in the next couple of weeks.

Yes they are. The Twin Pack alone had the 4th best opening of any Vita game, and is so far the sixth best selling game on the platform. On itself, it might not be anything noteworthy, except if you consider:

- It is a simultaneous release with the PS3.
- It is the only non-exclusive game besides GE2 to achieve those numbers.

Not really. To both of those points.
Given that two of the SKU's are simply half the package each you should, at best, count the one with higher sales only. Implying that Vita digital sales are higher than PS3s for this particular game with no data to go on.

Agree with the first part. Every individual copy of X or X-2 on Vita should count only as half.

About digital sales though. Has there been a single game available on both Vita and PS3 simultaneously where the Vita version hasn't sold more than the PS3 one digitally?

Does the character do an explosive fart half way through that gif?

I'll never believe anyone who ever tells me that SEGA doesn't pay attention to the details. lol.

Phantasy Star Nova will hurt really bad when neither SEGA itself nor Atlus publish it in the West.

It should be a lot easier to localize than PSO2 (no major online infrastructure), but I've learned not to get my hopes high when it comes to SEGA anymore.

Not really, Vita doesn't have many big games, I kinda expected the game to do well in general so its not that impressive.

It's got a 97% sellthrough. I don't know how you can downplay that. The only reason it didn't sell more was because more copies didn't exist in retail. Regardless of platform, it's an impressive percentage.

Still not sure why this was considered a disappointment, especially when it came out not too long after FFIV Advance. Ah well. We'll never get a similar treatment for FFV.

hmmm how about a port of FFXII on 3DS? I'd buy it, SE puts in less work than they have to, everyone wins!

You mean more work right? It'd be far easier to port to PS3/Vita than 3DS.

It's interesting to see that this is the first FF game after VI to ever be rereleased/ported to another platform. That might be also why there is demand for the game in general. Also, if you add up the PS3 and Vita combo pack sales, you'd get 402,797 sales so far. I'm assuming most people were really buying the game for X (and not X-2). So that easily puts it in 3rd place for sales of the remakes and rereleases. This is only behind the FF3 DS and FF4 DS remakes (approx 1m and 600k respectively). That's pretty good imo,

I'm not sure what to think of the Vita number, but it at least likely means if they plan to do any other FF HD remakes for PS3, they'll likely also consider Vita. I think doubling your sales by also releasing your PS3 game on Vita is nothing to scoff at.

Type 0 international, that might be a Sony thing though.

Hey guys... hum... I don't know where to ask for this but are we supposed to know about NPD sales for December 2013? Was it supposed to be on the 12 of the month after? I'm sorry to hijack this thread. But like I said, I couldn't find the info about it and I can't create threads yet so my only option was to ask in a sales thread.

With a new release I'm not expecting too painful a drop. Though the game could just be selling to the existing userbase rather than driving sales much.

Thanks for this. I've been looking for this info for a while.

I think it is no coincidence that the two best selling titles on this list are full-on remakes.

I want FFXII and Type-0 ported t Vita, but I secretly hope that SQEX brings remakes of VII - IX as well. I would love HD ports of these games but I'm not sure if they would ever achieve substantial sales considering their PSone versions are readily available on the PSN store.

Interesting list overall. I wonder if X/X-2 could become the second best selling there.

They can do a FFVII (remastered music and updated models) + Crisis Core HD compilation.

That's probably another easy 500k in Japan.

I doubt it would happen, though.

Is square even creating any mid budget Vita/PS3 games? I thought all those types of games were on smart phones outside of bravely. The last one was Drakenguard but I don't think we'll be seeing a sequel any time soon

Sure, don't see why not. Sony has a PSP emulator on PS3 too. You can literally play monster hunter portable 3rd HD on a PSP emulator because of this.

I think that seeing how X/X-2 are doing, the best option for SQEX would be an HD port of Type-0 on both Vita and PS3. They can get a nice chunk of sales in Japan that way, plus gamers in the west will get the definitive version of the game.

I doubt that would happen though.

I don't know if Square is actually funding their other games. I just mentioned them because the speed of BD releases may mean resources are getting directed from other projects.

I remember you said you were going to take a break from developing games after 3D Dot Game Heroes, but then I saw Bravely Default with Silicon Studio’s logo on it. That was a surprise. Are you developing any more games?

TT: Yes, but I can’t tell you what those are. We have one 3DS title, a PS3 title and a Vita title is also coming.

It's crazy to think in those peak DS days even a ugly remake of a shitty Final Fantasy could pull off a million in sales. Japan will never see such software success like they did in those days.

Looks like the X|X-2 remasters will reach 600k, I wonder what affect this will have on Sq-En future decisions...clearly they are surprised at these numbers because they are essentially sold out after two weeks (with 456k sold already).

Me thinks Sq-En didn't expect the remasters to outsell XIII-3.

BTW did we get sold through rates for LR?

I just hope they cut the fluff in the sequel, give me a solid 50 or so hour game, don't attempt to artificially prolong the game past it's best before date.

SE will never remake FFVII, because that would be admitting defeat from their neverending attempt to replicate its success.

SE is a good example of what Steve Jobs meant in that old interview with Robert Cringely for Revenge of the Nerds, when he was talking about companies being stuck in a cycle of trying to replicate their biggest success and not innovating. Square has been stuck since 1997, and everyone in upper management is too short-sighted to break that cycle.
