Massive EVE online battle, 10 hours, 2000 players, 57 dead titans.

There isn't a "third largest." There are two superpowers in EVE. No one else could realistically enter the battle at this point.

Smaller entities have been destroying key assets during this battle. A small pirate corporation managed to destroy a lone titan in the middle of nowhere attempting to get to the battle. A primarily roleplaying alliance managed to gank a Russian supercarrier in a similar situation.

That photo album is amazing.

Would be nice if EVE's servers could handle this kind of situation a little better. More dynamically, perhaps. 4 or 5 frames per second fucking sucks. I guess on the positive side, it means people can coordinate and organize a little better. But shit man.

It's handling pretty fucking well. 1 server, tens of thousands online, and it's not down? Frankly EVEs servers are impressive. Many MMOs could not handle that many.

and yet, it can clearly be better. one day servers will be able to handle an MMO engagement of this size much more fludily. today is not that day. that's for damn sure.

"Today, N3PL surprisingly lost sovereignty over PL's warzone staging system of B-R5RB, apparently due to an administrative issue with sovereignty bills. CFC forces were quick to capitalize and dropped their own Territorial Control Units, which take 8 hours to online until sovereignty is claimed."

And we bitch about how boring Star Wars: Episode I is.

The United States and Russia almost engaged in nuclear war because of computer glitches and irrational fears and confusion.

And let's not forget about the misinterpreted information that Vietnam started because of.

We're all lucky to be here considering how lethal these accidents can be in real life. So it's not surprising the same problems play themselves out in the virtual world for all the same reasons.

Not even close. The third largest power in EVE is probably Brave Newbies. They still send critical alliance updates through the in-game mail service. The biggest thing you need to worry about from BNI is a fluke.

PL lost more titans than they have in a long time, which are probably being replaced as we speak. Goonswarm has enough income rolling in to get the people rolling that lost them as well. The real problem here is the staging system being flipped. This locks out a large number of assets in system and lets Goonswarm have a foothold in the region. PL probably didn't sweat losing the assets in terms of wealth, rather it will cost them quite a bit of time to set up another system to stage out of.

January 27th - This day in history:

The United States, United Kingdom, and Soviet Union sign the Outer Space Treaty in Washington, D.C., banning deployment of nuclear weapons in space, and limiting use of the Moon and other celestial bodies to peaceful purposes.

ironic stuff.

Is it possible to be a pirate crew, pillaging and plundering? Or will you cross the wrong people and get destroyed?

N3/PL cannot replace 60 active titans in a timely manner at all. Its not just the expense its the time, it takes two months to build one. This will allow the RUS/CFC to rollover the southeast without having to worry about the "wrecking ball" fleet for quite a while IMO.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
I just saw a ship blow up from a laser that went on for like a min after twitch video loaded up

Many have had success today doing just that.
I want to play with those guys. I finally built my first gaming PC. That sounds like fun. How do people join these crews? I assume there's a GAF one out there.

No, but they could now replace PL as one of the superpowers. I know little of EVE Online, but they seem seriously fucked at this point. 63 Titans lost vs. CFC's 32.

Definitely. The point you need to take away though, is rather than the ships trading hands, the sovereignty of the system is the main concern. Having a foothold in the region is huge.

The last time a GAF corp formed they set the hangar to allow everyone to take stuff out "as long as you put stuff back in." The corp folded in like 3 days.

Just had a little trip down memory lane whilst watching this unfold and ponder what could have been. Remember being a part of the Stain Alliance just as it was formed, had to look it up - about a decade ago? Jeez. We all used to talk about the potential of the game, corps, and all the rest of it... Much has come to fruition although I retired a long time ago.

Makes me itch to start again but life, sensibilities and all that.

Is there ever going to be a new EVE or a similar game? I feel like joining now is difficult.

From what I gather, having not actually played the game myself, those USD$ values are more theoretical than actual. While it is possible for people to transform real world cash into ISK (EVE currency) via PLEX (essentially monthly subscription items that can be moved and traded in-game), no one actually does so in large volumes. All of those spaceships were built the traditional way: gathering up resources and money via in-game asteroid mining and so forth.

What I'm more curious about is the amount of man-hours needed to gather said resources.

It's not difficult and I doubt there will be an experience like EVE in a good long while. It took years for EVE to gain steam and that's not really viable for a lot of companies.

They key to EVE is you're mostly limited by your own ability, rather than the game. Finding a group of people who can adequately support you is key to getting into the game.

Haha, that explanation was hilarious.

At some point there will, as of right now not really. EvE is still playable by all means, it just depends what you want to achieve.

For example I'd rather be in your situation and excited by the prospects than mine with a lapsed account from the early noughties that could have been training crazy skills (which take a ridiculous amount of real world time). Throws a downer on proceedings. :p

Not with the industry in its current state. Mainstream publishers don't want to fund anything that seems remotely as hardcore/complex as Eve. Though with games like Eve, Day Z and Dark Souls recently getting popular it we might see some movement, but I don't know of any games like Eve currently in development.
