It's a confusing issue, and I don't really think there is a right answer. I know I love playing with my friends when given the option. But since I don't get to hang out with them a whole lot these days, co-op isn't really an option most of the time.
Thing is, though, just as games designed around co-op aren't as fun in single player, games designed around single player aren't as fun in co-op. I guess you just have to know what you're getting into when you get a game.
