Basically No One Has Joined Twitter for Months

If you're not "famous" Twitter is basically useless.

Anything I happen to tweet is going to be ignored by practically everyone.
This is me but with all other social media as well. I'm just not that much of an interesting person so there's no real point in talking about my life in the open like that.

I'm more surprised by the fact that people are still using Facebook. That thing is absolutely pointless if you don't have any friends. But Twitter can be a good source of news and sometimes meeting new people.

Facebook groups are actually pretty useful. I don't connect to any friends on Facebook, but I use it to participate in a few groups.

I don't understand how you can meet people in any meaningful way in 140 characters.

Poisoning the minds of millions of people with simple 140 character messaging.

I don't get why people think it's a good platform. I find it destructive.

What a terrible site, as soon as I signed up I got auto blocked and had to add a phone number. It's hilarious to me because the place is filled up to the brim with obvious bot accounts, and people spewing hate.

who wants to be on Twitter and expose yourself to the inevitable harrassment?

i guess a lot of people are saying "no thanks".

Twitter is awesome, I have two accounts.

One for the few people I know IRL that are on it, but I also follow cool people in certain industries, some funny people, and I've met some ppl thru tweeting at big accounts. My other one is for anime/art that I like.

There's a huge welcoming community on twitter for niche topics. You have to just keep at it for a bit, and you'll end up with an awesome feed following seriously funny people, content creators, speculators, etc.

For example I have a twitter bubble for Dragon Ball, and I get the fastest info from twitter, the best art, friends I've met online, and even access to DBS staff!

Obviously there's the deep dark side of twitter, but it's very easy to ignore.

Twitter is probably the best social media.

If you are into collecting things or purchasing limited-run items that sell out quickly, or hearing from particular people, groups, or companies in a timely manner, Twitter is by far the best platform.

There is literally nothing better for getting news and up to the minute announcements, it's not a "garbage platform" at all. Everyone in here saying it is just doesn't know how to use it.
What companies are you buying from who don't also use Facebook to advertise their limited products?

Looking for meaning in GAF
It's mostly garbage. It throws so many shitty ads into your twitter feed these days that it's not even worth looking at most of the time.

Seems like you have to wade through a bunch of random BS to get to the stuff of note which countless news/entertainment outlets and GAF/Reddit already screen for me anyway. Never saw the draw.

To be honest I never understood when Twitter launched what Twitter did that just having a public Facebook account wouldn't.

I used to love Twitter. I used it daily for several years. Not so much anymore.

To be honest I never understood when Twitter launched what Twitter did that just having a public Facebook account wouldn't.

The character limit just makes Twitter better. You get short communications rather than walls of text. It's easier to read and actually can make you think a little about brevity.

I don't understand how you can meet people in any meaningful way in 140 characters.

I met my wife on Twitter. Not kidding.

Annnnnnd this is why I stopped using it. When every 8th tweet is an ad, it's super distracting and a huge turnoff.

it's a shame, it's my favorite social media by far - i actually learn things on there. but sometimes if i'm bored on the crapper i dive into nazi/alt-right feeds and go on a reporting fest - there's been days ive reported 20 something accounts for the most blatant racism, anti-semitism, harassment etc and i think 4 being found in violation of the rules was my record.

it's a dumb sissyphean task and i' m not gonna keep at it, but holy shit i have no idea how their criteria works at all.

Twitter is not a good product at all.

Discovery features are bad so you're almost never going to have an interaction with a stranger unless it's a sociopath who uses it 20 hours a day to yell at people they disagree with. Lack of features to stop abuse means active users have the opposite problem where they have to face a torrent of shit. Celebrities checked out a long time ago so now most famous people have stage-managed accounts. It's really just journalists and comedians actually using it. The UX is terrible (I especially love all the shit they force down your throat and you can't turn off, "Show less of this" doesn't do fucking anything). No privacy granularity at all. Media features are garbage. Embedded images and videos are not very performant. Customer support could one day be something useful on Twitter, but most companies just have "@Soandso Sorry to hear you had a bad experience, DM us for more info" -> DM them -> "We'd be happy to help you with this, please call our customer service line M-F 9-5". If they had a more flexible bot specification they'd be a better platform for this. Oh, and speaking of bot specifications, their API is pretty bad and not useful for researchers, who otherwise would be the greatest evangelists of Twitter. Conversations are impossible because the threading interface is dreadful. If you have privacy turned on then there's no way to suppress follow requests without blocking someone. The onboarding process sucks. The spam problem is out of control, both in terms of sex-bot accounts, russian political accounts, and just blog spam. I think most of the people I know who have Twitter accounts use them for contest signup garbage.

It's hard to think of something Twitter does that it's actually good at.

Twitter is good at catering to me as an actually working stuff aggregator, as with enough persistence you can force it to view basically every post of people I follow, and due to following being an unilateral relation I can follow the accounts that keep the content to spam ratio above an epsilon without any drama following. The few people I know in real life tend to use Facebook exclusively and, well... maybe it's working for their hobbies and interests. For me it doesn't. You can't beat up that filter. The fact that RL acquaintances don't actually follow me is a plus.

Now this doesn't mean that I can't imagine this stuff being done better, but the fact of the matter at the moment is, Twitter is where most of entities who I actually want to follow are. Half aren't on Google+ or RSS readers, most are on Facebook but end up getting filtered out from the feed, not to mention they tend to mix up different portions of my life, and everything else I looked upon seems to have even worse interface, image based or something like that.

If you use twitter on your phone, download Tweetbot and you don't see those ads anymore

It was $10 when I got it, but worth every penny to not see ads anymore

Twitter is awesome if you know how to use it. Tweetbot & Tweeten = ❤️
If you subject yourself to the shit that is the website, well, you have only yourself (and Twitter) to blame. I’d gladly pay a reasonable subscription fee for it as long as it doesn’t turn into the shithole that is Facebook. It’s absolutely useless and way too convoluted for anything but private messages.

It’s sad to see my favorite “social” platform being infested with all the scum and bots in the recent past though.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I'm sure Twitters great for certain things and people but its basically Donald Trump's cum rag at this point and I have no real desire to support that.

You could say as well that all of them probably have a phone number, too. Userbase matters, but is not the whole deal.

For instance, as I mentioned already, Facebook will sometimes show you this sort of stuff for companies you've set to liked, but it may very well not show it and decide the fact friend of a friend changed their avatar a week ago is more important. Properly configured and maintained Twitter feed, on the other hand, WILL show you everything you ask it to show, nothing less (some things more, but in my case at least it's manageable).

Twitter is 🐐 if you know how to use it right.

Sports, GoT, memes, Black Twitter, award shows, world events.
Yeah, I agree with this. I personally don't like Facebook ot Instagram. Is there anything currently that could replace Twitter that others think is better?

I've always felt like people like Twitter because they can "converse" with celebrities. Other than that it's a really poorly done social media outlet.

I don't tweet as much as I used to, just interacting with the same people on there.

Its far better than Facebook imo I still believe in the "Facebook is for people you used to know, Twitter is for people you want to know.”

I like it. Direct and to the point. Best for breaking news and such. Depends on your interests, but for sports stuff, it's pretty much an essential.

I'm feeling like I'm ready to leave too. I really enjoy the memes and the funny videos but these bots and the shit face himself using the platform to announce policy just makes me want to say fuck it and be done. It's only because my loved ones are still there...yall know who y'all are ❤️

I enjoy using Twitter. Its an easy way to keep in touch with folks and has basically replaced RSS for me completely. Its great. Don't have to deal with people I don't want to talk with which is the case with Facebook.

I'm of two minds on Twitter. I use it regularly because there's great news, jokes, memes, threads, and thoughts on there but there's a lot of shit I hate too. All the ads, for one. Showing tweets out of order is another. I see stuff people retweeted entire days earlier alongside the latest tweets from my TL, it's confusing. Then there's the SAME tweets showing up on my TL over and over whenever I'm scrolling and that pisses me off. The Nazis and harassment issues are obvious.

But still, I can't imagine Twitter actually dying. It's just become so big in our cultural discourse for almost 10 years. We're at the point where even Disney movies are referencing it.

I believe you can do the same thing on Facebook. I remember options that allow you to tell Facebook what pages updates you want to see most so they'll push them to the top of your feed.

But maybe you've tried that and it doesn't work. A lot of things about how Facebook's feed works are really wonky so it wouldn't surprise me if this didn't either.

It's a shitty platform. I have a Twitter account solely because I'm a moderator on GAF. I set it up after being modded, so people could reach me if they needed to. I use it to retweet random shit and read dumb hot takes, mostly. And get called names by people who hate GAF.

I wouldn't be that sad if it ceased to exist. I think it lives right there on the cusp between being too useful to get rid of and too toxic to use.

Twitter has become something more than a social platform. I honestly don't know how I would get my daily news sources without it. Lots of quick and easy to read headlines from a huge number of sites. Throw in a few celeb and social tweets and it's perfect. No doubt the moderation needs a major re think but if you don't look for the bile it's pretty easy to avoid if you're just johnny normal.

Perhaps people don't want to join a social media site where Nazis harass people or youtubers with sizable fanbases instigate harassment or tweet unsolicited gay pornography at people they disagree with or deal with annoying russian bots astro turfing the platform.

but people love youtube

I "use" Twitter (I've basically stopped tweeting and following people and have mostly cleared out my past tweets and I've always had privacy on so I deliberately don't have any audience.) There are things that it is, comparatively speaking, the best at especially with the demise of Google Reader, but it's the best by virtue of being the only option, not because it's well executed.

I don't see how it's much different from other online social places, the narcissists, the trolls, the egos, the disingenuous, the decent, the idiots, all can found away from Twitter. I find Facebook and YouTube to be worse from personal experience.

The difference with Facebook is that you have pretty near complete control, if you want it, to remove the things that you don't like.

Not surprising. Twitter has become an absolute shitshow, and it's for factors that extend even beyond the orange cumstain we call a President.

The way the site handles abuse is horrendous, esstentially leaving the onus on users to use the block and mute buttons to try and moderate themselves. Which becomes untenable as you accumulate followers, or hell, even if you have just one tweet that catches on. Especially when you account for the persistance of people who are hellbent at arguing at anyone who disagree with their worldview.

Changing how threading/replying works has made carrying on conversations harder. It's harder to follow the flow of things, which sucks when someone is trying to read a series of related tweets.

The discover feature sucks, especially for trying to find new people to interact with.

The community is just bad. Near constant, 24/7 arguing and misery. That's not to say that's every twitter user or community; many have lovely Twitter experiences I'm sure. Even the few of my followers I still interact with are great. But the overall feel of the site has certainly become more negative, even toxic, over the years. Twitter has become probably the least "fun" of the major social networks. I'd struggle to tell someone to use it over facebook or Instagram now, which wasn't the case just 3 or 4 years ago.
