Battlefront 2 will have micro transactions, but won't be P2W

While Electronic Arts will release DLC for Star Wars Battlefront II free of charge, the game will also feature microtransactions.

Battlefront II design director Niklas Fegraeus confirmed the game will include microtransactions in an interview with GameSpot. You'll be able to progress and unlock content using earned in-game currency, but "if you want to accelerate that, if you can't play for a week, you can purchase that," Fegraeus explained.

"The important thing is everything can be earned [through gameplay]. If you're someone who spends time on the game, we love you, do your thing, do what you want to do. If you don't have the time, you can spend money and we love you as well. It's your choice," he added.

Fegraeus also went on to note that the microtransactions won't create a pay-to-win system. "No, it's not about buying the winning item," he explained. "No one can say, 'I'm going to spend my zillion dollars and then I'm going to dominate.' That's not how it works."

"if you want to accelerate that, if you can't play for a week, you can purchase that,"

So, it will take a week of playing every day to unlock one weapon or whatever?

It's not a perfect solution but I will gladly take it over paid map packs plain and simple. Longer lasting community and player base > always

One of the weapons in the previous game clearly outclassed many others in the previous game for a good while so it all depends on if they balance shit faster this time.

Yeah. Looks like any in-game content can be unlocked through play time and probably some other variables. I hope guns are not apart of this but that's probably going to be one of the things.

Expected, given that a season pass is no longer required to enjoy future content releases. They're going to make that money somehow, and this is it.

I'm still expecting people to be outraged at this despite the fact that these same people have been calling for an end to the season pass for years.

I think it's a good compromise.

Don't you unlock force modifications through loot crates? I'm not saying he's directly lying, but that's not a statement you can make until the players get your game. All it takes is one OP power combination and you'll have someone dominating the field. Of course they're not going to say it's P2W. I don't know, after them locking flares behind a level gate in BF3, and all the overpowered DLC weapon that seem to happen more often than not, I'm not sure I trust their word.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding how this works, but if you unlock power sets for your special characters through lootboxes, and one with all rare cards is better than one with no cards, than yes, I'd call that p2w. Especially if it takes a significant amount of time to unlock those.

The problem is usually that they crank up the XP/currency to such a degree that it is annoying. Not to mention DICE have been awful at balancing between new players and old players.

Will never forget the sheer stupidity that was having Flares an unlockable in BF3, making new players in jet fighters comparetively worthless to a player who had them.

Much, much, much better approach than the community segregating season pass approach they've had in the last several games.

Everything is unlockable without paying a dime extra by putting in the time.

If you can significantly accelerate progression via real money then its P2W regardless of what they are saying.

The website describes the micro transactions a bit better.

TROOPER STAR CARDS

Star Cards are powerful collectibles, allowing you to boost, modify, and assign new abilities across trooper classes and heroes.

Each trooper has multiple Star Card slots. Select from a huge variety of Star Cards to equip your trooper with unique abilities and boosts.
STAR CARD PROGRESSION

There are 4 tiers of Star Cards available, ranging from Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Epic... all of which can be earned through play.

The more you play, the more you earn.

As long as the in game progress isn't too weighted against the player. A week of casual play or a night or two of hardcore grinding I think would be fair.

I'm not sure you can really trust the people who gave away the best blaster in Battlefront 1 to people who paid for the Deluxe Edition, and made everyone else grind their asses for it.

If better weapons go to people who are higher in the XP progression, then anything that accelerates XP progression is kind of a cheat. Once everyone's at the cap things will be more level though I guess.

It's pay to win. A real non p2w version, would have loot boxes unlock emotes and weapon/player skins. Not game changing mod cards...

so it is p2w

The question is, can you buy cards directly either one by one, or in a detailed pack, or can you only buy loot boxes? There is a case where I prefer OW's system, because if the only way for every player to get the cards is through a loot box, then it's random and fair, even if you can buy more loot boxes. If you can directly buy cards that might take a nonpaying player 100's of hours to get randomly, than yes it's P2W.

I hope all of this XP grinding Starcard nonsense only applies to the third person shooter modes. Please keep Fighter Squadron pure -- that's all I ask. Don't ruin the one part of the game I loved :)

I'd rather pay $60 and have everything in the game I paid for be the content that I actually paid for, with paid for DLC. I miss the days of the original Battlefront games where you got what you paid for, had FREE cheat codes and unlockables all on the game disc, and now we have to pay for the game, pay for the online, and now pay to unlock unlockables.

Absolutely crazy the way people have accepted this business model.

That sucks tbh. Why not make it cosmetics only when it works so well for games like RL, Dota, CSGO, OW or PoE. If you don't care about skins you can just ignore that shit, no one will ever have any advantage over someone else or get items faster.

It can't get much worse than Battlefield 3 when they locked flares behind unlocks

DICE has some good games but also some really, really, really stupid decisions.

If it's anything like Battlefield 1 the maps between releases will be staggered by 6 fucking months

why would they rush to make maps when people don't pay for maps?

it's gonna be like other pay to win games in the genre.

BF1 will have what, 11 new maps in under a year?
