Not too many French-speaking Belgians in here (well, the tone of the OP didn't really help them feel welcome in here...).

Je viens de Bruxelles, d'autres membres made in Brussels ?

Hi everyone, what a pleasure to see some GAFers from our small country ! I thought I was the only one haha
Nice to meet you guys !

PS : sorry for not making a Dutch version, but even though I do understand the language, it is too hard for me to make correct sentences in it, my apologies !

PS : sorry for not making a Dutch version, but even though I do understand the language, it is too hard for me to make correct sentences in it, my apologies !

Most of us have that problem with French. :lol

(That right? My French is totally not up to standard.)

So guys, I may have to move to Belgium (Antwerpen) in a couple of months to work there from spain. How it's life there? Its there a good night life? Does it really rains the 75% of the time?

How is housing there? cheap/expensive? And it's life expensive? Any special laws I should be aware of? (I know about the 50% tax, yuck!) What are the social benefits of belgium?

Cheers!

Eh weird that I discover this thread only now. Belgo-GAF represent!. Coming from Nivelles here (town in Brabant Wallon south of Brussels).

Let the beer flow!

Nightlife is OK, lots of diferent types of bars, pubs and clubs which are open till the early hours and I you're in Antwerp you'll have a wide range to chose from. It's a 'happening' city with also lots of shops and culture. Not too bad a place, you could do a lot worse :)

Yeah, it rains quite often here but certainly not 75% of the time. Depends really, sometimes it rains day after day and then it can be dry for weeks. Most rain is in the autumn (november sucks!) and the spring. It will be a lot cooler here though than in Spain and it also gets quite windy here.

Housing prices have skyrocketed in the last 20 years to an average of 220K for a standard house but you'll probably rent something ? Expect to pay around 700 EUR/ month for something decent in the Antwerp region.

Life costs are around the same as in Spain I think though perhaps groceries are more expensive. Internet is also expensive here compared to abroad.

Social benefits here are second to none ! Belgium is a socialist haven. First class health care and education cost very little and you have social housing programs, job programs etc etc.. You have to try really hard to end up as a bum here :)

A big diference with Spain that annoys me is how little the people here are 'nocturnal' and how little sense of community there is.
Cocooning is our national sport and many people here don't leave there house anymore after 6pm after coming home from work.
In Spain the street and squares are full of people every evening but in Belgium you'll find them deserted except on summer evenings. Most shops here also close at 6pm so that might have something to do with it.
You might miss that from your home country.

It is changing though, since a year the local Carrfours in Leuven/Heverlee started closing down at 20.00 and 21.00 on Friday.

It's been like that over here for at least five years, at least for Carrefour. :lol

It's true that cocooning can be the national sport, but it depends on where you are. A lot of cities have an active evening/night life, especially cities with universities and colleges.

vrolijke kerst iedereen :)

Big retail stores like Carrefour, MediaMarkt and the likes tend to open later now, at least on friday and saturday. Still, it's true that most store close at 6-6.30 pm...

Nightlife depend on the town, in Liège for example, there's a pretty big nightlife most of the time. Mostly young people but the population is a bit older on Saturday and late at night on friday.

What about language? I know here in Spain, it's difficult for outside people to make any conversation as not a lot of people know english, or know it at conversation level. Will I have any issues communicating with people or it's like the nordic countries where everybody knows english?

I have zero kwonledge of the local language so it would be quite difficult. I guess I should start learning it :D

Many people speak English, I think we have one of the higher proficiency ratings in the world. We're 13th on the list, if my Google-fu is accurate.

Younger people will, at the very least, be able to hold a semi-fluent conversation in English. Older people might have more trouble with it, but it all depends. It shouldn't be that big of a hurdle.

Learning a bit of Dutch might not be a bad idea, but from what I hear it's a difficult language to get into. Worth it, though.

So, Belgium-Gaf, I'm in Brussels from now until about 20.00, what shouldn't I miss (in central Brussels)?

- Get chocolates from Neuhaus, or even better, Marcolini. There are shops for both all over Brussels but I recommend the ones in Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, also because it's a great location (one of the first shopping arcades in Europe)

- Go and see Manneken Pis and be slightly dissappointed ;)

- By art books at the Taschen store (not a lot of these in the world and the one in Brussels is designed by Philippe Starck)

- Take a walk from Central Station and through the Sablon area for antiques and great Art Nouveau houses.

- Eat a waffle

- Visit the Grand-Place, it's one of the most beautiful central squares of Europe

- Visit the Dansaert district, it's the up and coming area, with great stores, Janneke Pis, some work of Space Invaders (the guy that makes pixel art with tiles)

- When you are there, grab a burger at Ellis Burger (Place Sainte Catherine), they're the best gourmet burgers and the best fries you'll find anywhere.

Some of my own (low quality, sorry) pics

I love Space Invaders streetart, there are a lot of them in Paris (Montmartre area mostly) too. And I've seen one in Amsterdam.

By the way, how is the best Belgian band ever not mentioned in the OP Belgium Gaf? Tssk!

dEUS - Instant Street

Still get goosebumps watching this again.

You misspelled Soulwax ;)

Man, I never had a burger this tasty. I'm vegetarian and I always get the Soy Cheese with fries and the home made Ice Tea. My wife is addicted to the regular cheese burger, but they have more exotic offerings too.

And their home made mayonnaise. MANA OF THE GODS.

Hey, anyone know what the cheapest option right now is for a SIM card, for just calling? Possibly short-term kind of thing, so I'm considering both prepaid or subscription.

This Scarlet Mobile Red seems interesting.

I'm going to Brussels on Valentine's day for a day with my SO for a lovely day (hopefully). And I already saw the suggestions from kurisu1974, so I'm taking those already in to considerations. Anything else special in Brussels to do? Like a nice romantic restaurant?

thanks neighbors :)
