Bernie Sanders Univision interview.

How is she good and prepared? What did she accomplish in her 7 years in the Senate? What did she accomplish as Secretary of State (other than convincing Obama to bomb Libya)?

This post on this topic is even more ridiculous, considering Clinton ILLEGALLY backed a coup that ousted the democratically elected president of Honduras.

Clinton's record:

- Voted FOR the invasion of Iraq
- Voted FOR the bailouts
- Voted FOR the Patriot Act
- Voted FOR renewing the Patriot Act

Not that I necessarily disagree with you, but random insertion of the bailouts made me laugh.

Yep, Libya is really all Hillary's fault.
She should be flogged before the UN for her uncalled call to arms that nearly led us into another Iraq but worse because she alone convinced everyone to go for it.
No one but her should be punished for that.

That is definitely part of how she's framing her campaign, and it'd be stupid not to. But like I said, nothing is going to pass domestically because republicans will still control congress.

There are actually stark differences between Clinton and Obama in foreign policy base on their records, insider accounts, and even their rhetoric. This causes concern for me because this is by far the area that the presidency has the most influence over. And I don't believe you can just hand wave away her record and accounts of disputes between her and the president just because her campaign is framing itself as Obama's third term in the PR.

I'm not sure they're even that far on foreign policy when continuity of policy means that even if Trump is elected there's some stuffs that won't change anyway (because Trump ain't firing all the diplomats to begin with).
And as Obama's Secretary of State I'd say we got a taste of what her policies would be like.
Of course she's the sole reason behind Libya but still.
She really is

He has passed 3 bills, 2 of which were renaming Post Offices.

Look that up, it's true.

He's been in the Senate for twenty-five years.

he's been in the senate for ten years, he was in the house for 16 before that (and had the illustrious record of voting for every crime bill and every military intervention, save one)

Hail to the KING baby
He should at least know that Brazil is in the middle of a FUCKING OUTRAGE right now. Even gaffers know that.

I can't believe Sanders doesn't know everything. HOW DARE HE?!? Meanwhile, Hillary knows all about Latin America. She's just like my abuela! Wow. Much authentic. So normal. Very human!
Great post, full of substance. Has Hillary come out in an interview where she said she doesn't know or has to look into the situation happening now for these countries? Does she have some sort of non-answer you can post a link to or are you just shitting on her blindly because reasons? If you do have a link I'd like to see it as I would have the exact same criticisms for her as I do for Bernard.

Again, you don't have to know everything; but you do have to know about the damn job I'm hiring you for. Don't know why anybody is celebrating ignorance here (feigned or real) on Bernard's part. This really comes down to him only caring and knowing about a few domestic issues and anything else he just hand-waves away.

guys come on, foreign policy is just a tool of the establishment

if it isn't about wallstreet and revolutions, it doesn't matter. at least ron paul seemed to have more knowledge of the world around him

I mean, you say this, but the foreign policy record of Presidents seems to have no real relationship to their foreign policy experience. The last president with significant foreign policy experience before taking office was Bush the elder, and his foreign policy relations were... subpar, to say the least.

I mean some of these questions weren't even foreign policy questions per se. Asking a candidate who wants to add more socialist structures to America about how certain socialist structures have failed in other countries is a question that Sanders should be 100% prepared for. That should be right in his wheelhouse. The fact that he has to waterbug away from questions about something that should be his #1 strength is not a good look.

A lot of this falls to his team. They are either not competent enough to prepare him for an obvious line of questioning or he is too stubborn/tired to listen to them. Neither gives me much confidence in how he would perform as President.

Whoever it was, it's true.

Do you think the leader of any country, must or should know details about foreign affairs?
Short answer: No.
Long answer: No. There are people on the presidential staff that take care of those details. They provide the needed information on said topics, so the president can take a well informed decision.

I'm going to quote this a second time because I still can't believe this is a genuine post on GAF. To literally argue that a presidential candidate doesn't need to know about foreign affairs, it beggars belief. How can you make it so far in life with so little knowledge of how the world works to form such a view?

Starting during this campaign season, it's no longer expected for a presidential candidate to be more qualified than the average schmuck on the street.

The campaign itself tells us a lot about Sanders' hiring abilities. The team he has put together has been consistently out organized and out maneuvered. They excel at raising money and organizing large rallies, but have been limited everywhere else.

Why did he hire staff who completely failed to prepare him for this interview? I understand that campaigning is insanely difficult and stressful, but the actual job he is running for is more difficult and more stressful. If his caimpaing staff is amature hour why would his White House staff be any different?

Yeah, I'm totally not buying the argument that ignorance is a virtue. If Sanders at least had a reasonable critique and the competency to explain why previous foreign policy decisions were a misadventure (even in the context of not having a perfect plan himself), that would be one thing. However, to praise him for saying "i dunno, lol" can't really be differentiated from the people who say Trump being ignorant is a good thing cause it screws over 'the establishment'.

Sanders, like Trump, is an isolationist and protectionist - but you can be those things and still have at least a working knowledge of current events.

From the get-go, one of my biggest problems w/ Sanders was that he doesn't seem to have the knowledge and skills required to be President of the United States. It's a job that you basically have to be on call for 4 years, any moment anything can happen. Every night you'll get some wind down time, but otherwise you are doing things that have an impact on pretty much the whole world 14-18 hours a day. Bernie has never struck me as someone who has the ability to handle such enormous pressure and the job in general.

He just comes off as a shleb and the idea that part of his charm is that he has his wife file their taxes with turbo tax or that he rides the subway to work or that he's in substantial credit card debt has always baffled me. I want someone who is going to be on their game at all times for the 4-8 years they're president and put in the work that's required. I want someone who has worked in high pressure jobs before and can be relied on to take the 2am phone call that something crazy went down. Bernie scares the shit out of me in that regard.

Yeah, that's the biggest problem here.

Let's fair, that the guy running for President doesn't have the skills to run the country is not the issue.
I mean I could fit a deck of cards with the rulers who were fit for running and still weren't a total disaster.
The issue here is that he doesn't even want to learn the skills to properly rule.

If you're a decent recruiter chances are you can excuse someone who is underqualified BUT is willing to get up to speed the fastest that person can.
Someone who isn't even interested in learning the shit needed for the work? That guy probably knows someone high up to get the job and isn't getting fired because that person is protected.

He doesn't put in the minimum amount of work to get brushed up on topics he knows he will be asked about during interviews.

That mentality in the Oval is terrifying. Who is going to pick up after the President on his job?

Details. Big difference. And stop being so condescendent when you can't even read properly.

This is something I can get behind. Sanders hiring abilities might not be what's needed to go against a political machine as Hillary, that can change her rethoric freely in order to get more votes and actually succeeding at it.

Ah the Trump defense: I'll hire the smartest people who know about everything. It will be beautiful. Trust me!

Trump defense? Jesus christ... It's like your brain didn't even wake up today.

He wanted to go in to Univision and appeal to Hispanic voters. Many of the Hispanics in CA are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, generation immigrants. Immigrants who have fled dictators and socialist regimes. So why was he not ready to make the distinction between those regimes and his brand of socialism?

It seems really easy to expect that question.

For the millionth time:

Sanders shrugged off the biggest specialist in minimum wage policy in the world as "establishment".

And some of you guys think he would have good cabinet picks?

Every single signal he's sent on the technical people he chooses to surround himself with is that they shouldn't be technical people at all: They should agree with his preconceived ideas.

This is an awful trait for a president.

I have 2 theories. First, his best staffers have already left and all that's left are the cult worshippers who think he can do no wrong.

Or second, they warned him but he fell asleep or didn't bother studying because he felt it was unneeded.

That being said, I respect him for admitting what he doesn't know when he could probably just spit out some nonanswer like "well i want peace and prosperity for the region and think the gangs are preventing that. Anything I can do to stop them as US president will be considered seriously as the violence impacts us all".

Bjergsen is the greatest midlane in the world
The first question in the video is worse for me. When asked about the effects of the war on drugs related to Mexico he targets that the lives being ruined are the nineteen year old Americans charged with marijuana possession, and the black mark it places on their record.

"I would gather a coalition of the willing, wa womp wa womp womp womp-"
*audience's eyes glaze over since they couldn't point out Venezuela on a map*
"...and that would totally not destabilize an entire region, which I know a little something about."
*audience wakes up and starts clapping*
"She's so experienced!"
Yeah let's just give presidential candidates a pass for not knowing much about foreign policy because stupid people don't care about foreign policy.

Ignorance for the win!

Considering the last century or two the best intervention the US can have in Latin America is non-intervention.

Basically this. Our "pivot" to Asia, our relationships with far flung European powers, and obsession with the Middle East has saved Latin America from a lot of our meddling. On one hand I appreciate a politician revealing (through unpreparedness) how little Latin America matters to our foreign policy, but it's alarming to see just how badly he fumbled this.

I really don't like that we're most likely to get a hawkish president this Fall.

That mentality in any position where you are to lead a team is horrible.
And looking at his campaign tells me that whenever he's going to fail it's never going to be his fault.
That's actually the single biggest trait I absolutely hate in a politician, you would have a better chance making me eat toxic sludge really.

Yeah the current state of Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela is a detail...

The defense responses here are hilarious. Sarah Palin was shown no mercy for her ignorance and she was running for VICE president.

Why should Bernie-dude get some slack?

I elaborated in a following post. And in this case knowing about foreign policy didn't keep her from making choices in regards to Egypt and Libya that will haunt her legacy.

There's a non-trivial difference between admitting a lack of knowledge and Palin going on a psychotic rant.

Mr. NeoGAF teaches Foreign Policy 101

Bernie student: Yo teach, I didn't study, I can't name anything on the test, and I've basically been blowing off this class since day 1.

Mr. NeoGAF: Oh well, as long as you're honest about it. A+!

Hillary student: Morning Mr. NeoGAF, I just sent you my ten-page research paper on drug policy in Latin America, it's thoroughly sourced in MLA format and I even managed to interview a Venezuelan politician for first-hand knowledge of the situation. I also have a hard copy for you right now.

Mr. NeoGAF: An F you lying shill!

Spin it anyway you want, you're still excusing ignorance for a man running for commander-in-chief of the most powerful nation on the planet.

But it is the defense. If your answer is I'll just hire smart people and select an answer from them it shows complete lack of understanding about the office you're running for. It's not a multiple choice quiz. You need to know a thing or two about the world too.

The US's war on drug's impact on South America - mere "details".

And regardless, if the answer to this

is anything except "hell, yes", you shouldn't even be entitled to vote. Such a comment should shame anyone for so ardently embracing ignorance.

"You are asking me a lot about questions that aren't the United States. I'm running for president here. Please keep the topics local"

"Ok so what do you plan to do as President for the US"

"well a lot of countries on earth are doing better than we are. We should be more like Sweden and Denmark."

Whats funny is that the people of Denmark do not appreciate their country being put on a pedestal by Bernie.

I'm not sure if it's agenda driven that you post every negative news or spin about Bernie all the time in off topic. Like what's poligaf's point? I thought that's where Hillary bros hung out to congratulate themselves.

The internal politics of other countries that are not key allies or opposition to the us are not his priority to know as a candidate nor as president. All he needs to know is how to appoint a team to investigate and report to him the situation and possible solutions so the president can give the go ahead or not. The potential effects of deportations will be further studied while in office.

Would Hillary respond with something like "don't worry we can form a coup and settle a guerilla army to murder anybody who objects and to ransack everything in the name of order and that way we get priority trade deals to ensure that the new elected leader stays rich, don't worry, Kissinger told me all about it".

Like what would happen to off topic if every random news about every politician would get posted all the time? Results about primaries or key events or disruptive situations should be posted, but trying to post everything about the candidate you hate so you can lead an agenda filled discussion only helps generate the cesspools that have been the threads about the presidential elections.

I'm risking a ban on "thread whining", and in a way I suppose it is, but I'm gonna call you out on the bullshit that you are doing. So please, give it a rest, you queen has won, and you're not helping at all to push this whole "party unity" you guys want by discrediting the other candidate everyday with whatever headline there is.

Right. I'm sure.

He has misrepresented their policies many times. Which OK fine, even if he's cherry picking parts about their governments that he likes, it is also important to understand where far left governments have gone wrong as much as it is to understand what far left policies have worked.

The fact that he couldn't answer questions even about Argentina and Brazil is pretty bad. Especially considering how he has advocated implementing trade policies similar to theirs.

I think that is also one reason why Denmark doesn't like the comparison, they are very much in favor of free trade, and not protectionist economic countries like he is advocating we become.

Because Bernie has a penis and also may or may not be the messiah. Allegedly.

Also, look over there, it's a billionaire and a big bank!

But she HASN'T won, that's the myth. Neither candidate will secure enough delegates to secure the nomination before the convention. Google is counting superdelegate pledges from a year ago, not votes. The super delegates haven't voted yet.

If she has the pledged delegate lead after 6/7 (spoilers she will) the superdelegates are not going to overturn that.

And pissing off the Democratic party, showing ignorance on policy issues that go beyond fuck the establishment and almost certainly ending up with less pledged delegates helps him win over super delegates how? Because he polls better than Trump in a few polls before he's attwcked?

Its incredibly telling how two out of the three presidential candidates left know next to nothing about their neighbors south of the border. What the hell, Bernie. I expected more from you. Especially when you knew you were going to a Univision interview! I mean c'mon!
