[Bloomberg] This PlayStation Veteran Is Helping Make the Xbox Relevant in Japan

Kato helped build Sony Group Corp.'s console into a dominant presence in the games industry over two decades with PlayStation. Since July, she's taken on a far more daunting task: selling the Xbox to studios who swear by Sony and Nintendo Co. She's counting on her dealmaking skill, Microsoft's global reach and her own local connections to finally make the Xbox a relevant player.
"Japanese publishers will definitely need us in expanding their business," Kato said in an interview. "It would be difficult to do that just with the PlayStation."
The Xbox unit, led by Phil Spencer, has been stepping up its foray into the world's third-largest economy, with the executive in September saying players can expect top-tier Japanese titles as Xbox exclusives in the future. His company has lagged mainstays Sony and Nintendo, but Kato brings the local experience and connections that it has long coveted. The executive said she was approached by Microsoft several times before she finally agreed to join.

Kato doesn't expect negotiations with partners to be easy and anticipates there'll be plenty of adaptation required for Microsoft to increase its relevance in Japan's games industry.

"We face a challenge and that means there are still a lot of things we can and should change," she said.
"Microsoft offers huge scalability to Japanese publishers as there's virtually no country without Windows PCs," UBS Securities analyst Kenji Fukuyama said. "When it comes to access to game fans in emerging countries, Sony and Nintendo just can't compete with Xbox."

This is the equivalent of Google hiring jade raymond to develop stadia because she "helped" ubisoft made Assassins Creed.
You got it all wrong.

Google hired Jade Raymond as their head of Stadia's internal studios because she was the one that set up the Toronto studio for Ubisoft from nothing, which within three years released Splinter Cell: Blacklist and had begun to play instrumental support roles across several major Ubisoft titles. After that, she left the company to create a new studio, Motive, under the Electronic Arts banner in Montreal, attracting a lot of talent from the North American dev scene to their original and Star Wars projects; and within a year or two since joining EA, she had become the general manager of all NA studios outside of BioWare, Respawn and EA Sports teams.

She's one of the few genuinely great executives and managers in the industry, and just by looking at the resumes of the dozens of veteran game develops that have followed her around across all her ventures (from Ubisoft to EA, to Stadia and now Haven) you can see the respect that people have for Jade Raymond as a leader.

She was key on AC, built and leaded a team that got a failed Prince of Persia sequel project and turned it in a record breaking new IP.

Later did the same with failed Driver sequel project and built and leaded team that make a recordr breaking new IP, Watchdogs.

Also build and leaded Ubisoft Toronto studio, which quickly became the 2nd biggest and most successful Ubisoft Studio, able of working on many top performing AAA games from series like all Far Cry titles since 4, South Park Stick of Truth, For Honor, The Division, Splinter Cell, many AC games or Rainbow Six Siege to name some of them.

Jade is the leader and the one who built very productive and successful AAA teams that made or worked on record breaking fastest selling new IPs ever in gaming, like AC, Watchdogs, The Division plus many other top performing AAA games. She is one of the most important people in the industry because very little people achieved it and way less achieved it multiple times as she did. She is recognized as a very talented leader by the people who worked with her, great at building top performing and highly productive AAA teams and new IPs.

The person mentioned in the OP instead was a random loser in Sony. She was VP of business development in Japan Studio from 2013 to 2020. All the projects they had there were business failures: money sinks like The Last Guardian that needed external western studios to fix and complete its development, turds like Knack 2 and many other failures that ended on losing many of the key staff of the studio and putting most of the remaining ones to make -later cancelled- mobile games. And Japan Studio had business with Japanese 2nd party teams which most of them did stop working with Sony while she was in charge.

She then became Japan Studio vice president of mobile business in 2020 before leaving the position a year later, at the same time that mobile games that were being developed in Japan Studio got cancelled and people from there got fired and the studio ended being restructured and losing more key talent. In the recent 4 years of Jim Ryan era SIE expanded very successfully in all platforms, markets and regions excluding one of the single key areas where SIE wanted to expand: mobile business, the one she was in charge of.

So she got fired from Sony. The Japan Studio 2nd party team got branched out to have their own office and don't depend on people like her and instead work collaborating with the other SIE 2nd party teams from EU and US (XDEV), and Japan Studio internal development teams got merged into one of their internal teams: Team Asobi, whose boss was promoted to studio manager.

Bloomberg is a propaganda outlet where mercenary clowns like Takashi Mochizuki and Jason Shredder made up multiple anti-Sony fake news hit pieces stories and lies which later have been debunked with official statements and facts.

Here is a free consultation; the only way to penetrate the Japanese market is to release their games on relevant consoles such as the PS5 and Switch. The Xbox hardware is dead in Japan and no amount of former Sony or Nintendo executives that MS recruits can do a single thing about it.

Oh, and Mochizuki is a joke "journalist". His articles are only useful for the Lols.

Which people at Xbox were behind the Persona deals and FFXIV? If she was in those meetings then she’s doing a decent job so far. If not then she still needs to prove herself. It’s really that simple.

I think it would be cool if Xbox also brought whoever is in charge of their indie initiative to Japan so that they put some money behind the Japanese indie scene, including putting money behind talent that were thrown to the wayside like the guys who used to work at Japan Studio. They’re out there somewhere.

Was she at Playstation when they started to lose the Japanese market? Because it's Nintendoland now.

No company can compete with the hubris of Microsoft's Xbox division.

Makes sense. If companies want their IPs to grow and expand, they have to come to Xbox and PC. For the first party it does not matter, for the third parties it is a must if they want to grow.

What emerging markets? Boy she really didn't do her homework did she?

Xbox isn't doing better in China, South America, etc for sure, lmao.

Her logic is: everybody in the world is using Windows PCs. Every Windows PC has the Xbox/Gamepass app. WE"RE NUMBER ONE FUCK YEAH! WHOO!!

As if there was no such thing as Steam which completely demolishes the MS store/Gamepass.

Xbox will never be able to even try and compete with Steam.

Sony even surpassed the on streaming capabilities. The fact we can play PS5 games in 4k with barely any latency way before Xbox games is mindblowing to me considering the resources MS has at their disposal vs Sony...

I love Neogaf when criticizes MS for not doing something and, then, criticizes too if they do it.🤗

The news here is that MS is investing and working to bring more games from Japanese developers to its ecosystem (which is not limited to what comes to the Xbox console to boost its sales there).

It is difficult for some to understand (especially for those who are waiting for Xbox to become EA's business twin before 2027 😅) that MS knows that it needs in the ecosystem, where Gamepass is present (Console, PC, phone, xcloud), a varied and attractive catalog especially with a view to positioning itself as best as possible for the future and, of course, the games of Japanese developers are important.

Will it be of any use? Is it a wasted effort? There is no doubt that the situation cannot be more complex, but it is clear that if they want to enhance the catalog of their ecosystem, make Gamepass the most attractive service in view of the future of cloud gaming and, yes, satisfy their loyal users. of consoles, at least they have to try.

The fact is that the results are there for whoever wants to see them. More and more games from Japanese developers are coming to XBOX, including franchises that were always exclusive to PS. Beyond the main FF series, it is increasingly difficult to recognize any great franchise or reference game that does not reach the XBOX ecosystem. It can be added that Spencer and Nadella themselves have ensured the announcement of exclusive games from Japanese Studios.

But hey, I guess even the fact that MS even tries is not to the liking of some here.... Which is funny if supposedly according to them it is in vain.

Dude, look at the headline; Xbox has been around for over 20 years and is still looking to find market relevance in Japan.

Don't you think that history warrants warrants a fair amount of cynicism?

Not really, no. They're hiring an ex-Sony staffer and trying again. Unless you think Sony's strategy also deserves cynicism, they're probably literally going to be trying the same thing she did previously. She acknowledges that they have an uphill effort in the article. Much better to keep trying than just give up.
