Bonus Round: E3 2012 Preview [Up: Part 5: Thrid Parties Again]

I can see people predicting the decline of the 3DS but to call it dead, after what the DS did to Sony, seems a stretch right now. Especially how they are tracking ahead of the DS and how well the new games are selling.

Nintendo did do a very poor job presenting the Wii U as new hardware. It's just a little odd that anyone in games press wouldn't notice it. Ignoring the Cafe scuttlebutt leading up to E3, wasn't there an announcement prior stating there would be a new console? and even ignoring that, it's not too difficult to put 2 and 2 together if it's your job.

Still, compare how Nintendo revealed the Wii U to how Microsoft revealed the updated/slim Xbox 360. Or any hardware, really. If I'm remembering correctly, in 2005 Iwata held up the Wii console and showcased the controller about a year before any games were shown. Reggie should've pulled out the Wii U from his jacket, because he's a large man and has that pocket space.

Yes, they officially announced that their next console would be at E3.

I don't disagree that it was a shit reveal, but hearing journalists say that they didn't get that it was a new system at all until the end or someone in the next seat explained it after the show was embarrassing.

$399 coz the fanboys are gonna pay any price anyway...yeah look at the 3DS

That guy is a moron and looks like your typical nerd with the way he crouches on the seat.

IQ levels on the tards not understanding the Wii U reveal is around 10! Seriously, you wheel chair bound idiots were confused? And you call yourself GAMERS? Hahahha, I haven't had a laugh like this in a while! It might not have been shown in the best order and just because Iwata didn't come out with it held in his hands people didn't get it?? Really?? It's time for another hobby, maybe you can find one of those special Olympics considering this is the year for the summer Olympics. I still need to donate this year, so please let me know what special people organization I should send it to.

As someone who has a friend that is now unable to enjoy games on the Wii or WiiU due to motion gaming, as he has Type II SMA and has been wheelchair bound almost his entire life, I find this post very offensive.

I still say the best way to reveal the Wii U would have been a teaser trailer for Smash Bros. having all the characters from the major franchises run by in HD and end with Mario saying, "It's-a me! In HD!"

"We're going to show our new console today. But first, this stuff!"

*shows stuff*

"Okay, time for our new console!"

*shows Wii U*

I really don't think it's too much to ask for a journalist to be fucking paying attention during the most important press conference of the year.

I love you Billie but that was not how that conference went down. I was watching that shit live. They did not clarify on-stage whether it was a controller peripheral for the Wii, whether there was an entirely new box running it, nothing. 'twas pretty vague.

Yeah because a tablet controller is going to automatically make the Wii console HD and super powerful.

*smh*

Except for, you know, that HD Zelda tech demo.

Ever heard of tongue and cheek, notice my username? Did I call out your friend? Was I specifically calling out anyone who really is in that situation? No, I used it as an example, and sorry if you are offended but, pretty much EVERYTHING is offensive these days. Talk about mature gaming and sexual themes, big tits, homosexuality, religion, perverse themes etc... the list goes on and on.. gaming is all about stereotypes now because developers think they are creating playable movies.. it's a cesspool and if you don't like it, find a new hobby. WTF happened to peoples sense of humor.. Gaming is like the internets now, "Serious business"

Look at the GAF thread at the time. Check the archives. Nobody was certain until the new footage whether the tablet was just the controller or if they were actually talking specs about the new system, and even after the thing was over people were like "What just happened"?

It was a terrible presentation. Even as someone who went in expecting, you know, a console reveal, the message was confusing at best.

Yep. I still remember seeing scans of newspapers and magazines (not necessarily gaming publications) saying explicitly that it was a new controller for the Wii - simple as.

It was indeed terrible, and it's fine if some people were confused, but I truly don't understand how anyone, especially journalists, could possibly think it was a new Wii peripheral and not a new console.

25 seconds in..."a new Nintendo system."

That's a little overblown, but not that overblown. Remembering that something as crazy-different as the Kinect and the Move already existed, and the Wii was a basket case of specialised peripherals, without the focus on the actual new box itself it's easy to see how the message got swallowed.

I was looking away and only half listening to the horrible Reggie as he rambled on about We and Us and You and That Other Guy, such an embarrassment, and still it was entirely clear that it was the controller for the new Nintendo system called the WiiU. If people were acting confused in the reveal thread, then I guarantee it was pantomime because no one on this forum could actually be so thick as to not put 2 and 2 together.

Yep. Basically like what they did for Kid Icarus and 3DS. Then follow with the promotional Miinigames reel, Bird demo, Zelda demo, then a giant list of games and publishers commiting and finally finish with demo units on hand.

3DS reveal was pitch perfect and likely the best coming out for a gaming hardware platform ever, I still don't understand why Nintendo didn't just reuse the formula for Wii U.

I was paying attention during the briefing and realised that it was a new system but the image that sticks in my mind most was of the Wii-U controller flanked by 4 Wii-motes with no base unit in sight. It was a confusing reveal, to say the least.

What kind of analyst can he claim to be poo-pooing the 3DS after seein' dat sexeh Midnight Purple one? :p
The type that knows a contracting market when he sees one?

The danger is truly there, but "spin" notwithstanding, 3DS is ahead of the DS while iOS is red hot and growing...

Note I say this having had owned only two Nintendo consoles in my life (GC and DSlite).

I was so excited by the idea of seeing the next Ninty console at E3 last year and walked away confused and disappointed.

Terrible reveal. The worst you could possibly do, as far as I'm concerned.

They really have to redeem themselves this year.

They specifically used the phrases "home system" and "our next platform" earlier in the conference. They referred to Wii as a system and made it obvious that the thing called "Wii U" was a sytem. The context was obvious. I will concede that if you walked in, had never seen video games before and didn't know what anything technology wise meant, and had just watched a specific 2 minute slice out of a 1 hour presentation out of context before turning around and walking away, you could reasonably be confused.

On top of that we'd literally had rumors from as early as the Jan before E3 that Nintendo would be revealing a new platform.

I can't help but think some GAFers and people in the media were being intentionally obtuse, or had some form of agenda.

And I'm the guy in the WiiU thread always saying stuff like "Stop with this persecution complex guys."

BECAUSE THE RUMORS HAD STARTED ALMOST SIX MONTHS EARLIER!

Devs, and even Nintendo themselves had chimed in a loooong time before the conference. There was no excuse for it.

We KNEW they would be showing a new platform, and we KNEW it had a screen on a fairly traditional controller. We just hadn't seen either of them.

It was far from their best conference. But please stop trying to rewrite history.

Exactly this.
I am right now WAY more confused by the comments in this thread about last year's conference than I ever was about the Wii U reveal itself.

I'm pretty shocked we're not getting a release date and price-point though. If the Xmas 2012 release rumors are true, then they're really taking their time here with these details.

No way we will see a Zelda at launch. Wasn't that long ago we got Skyward Sword. Zelda and Metroid are really the only Nintendo franchies I like. So if they can't at least get a Metroid on launch, I'll be waiting.

Didn't Nintendo "unveil" Wii U by showing the tablet heavily and barely even recognizing the console part? It even looked like the Wii console.

And just talking about it like below, it was mildly confusing.

They called it a system and referred to the controller as "the controller for WiiU". The first video, the one that showed mostly Wii-like casual games, ended with HD Zelda footage that could never be done on Wii. Then they showed a trailer full of HD games that looked worse than PS3/360/PC games despite being the PS3/360/PC versions.

Plus Nintendo ALWAYS showed Wii in the vertical position. The horizontal-only Wii revision hadn't come out yet. And the WiiU is a lot rounder.

I wasn't paying much attention to the GAF thread because I was busy watching the conference. When I checked it after the WiiU reveal it was like stepping into a madhouse.

This is some revisionist history bullcrap going on in this thread. The message Nintendo was sending was mixed and confusing, and it wasn't just a handful of people going ZUH!? at what Nintendo showed. They kept flashing the words "NEW CONTROLLER" on their reveal video, while showing Wii Sports-level crap. It's idiotic.

The number of people being ignorant/stupid does not validate their ignorance/stupidity. They called it a new controller. They did not call the controller WiiU. It was possible to be confused if you missed the parts where Reggie called it a new system and called the controller "the controller for WiiU" but once they got to the HD Zelda footage in the first video that should have ended all confusion. No new controller is going to give Wii HD graphics capabilities.

Same with Wii in 2006 they announced price and date at a September of 2006 in a separate conference.

I think they know the date but want to gage reaction in order to set the price.

And the date is going to be: Sunday November 18th 2012 btw that is just looking at the Agenda and commonsense.

Does Sessler really think that Nintendo shouldn't talk about 3DS in the conference because it will confuse people? That was a very stupid statement.

It's why I don't get why Sessler's as popular as he is. For every good point he makes, he makes one equally as asinine a few minutes later.

Just a recap of EVERYTHING Sessler said during Bonus Round:

- Wii U is a terrible name that sounds stupid

Seriously? This isn't 2006, dude, let it go. Your opinion of the Wii name didn't stop people from buying that, Sessler, what makes you think it'll matter now?

- having another console with the Wii brand on it will confuse the casual market

Yeah, just like the iPhone confuses the marke.... OH WAIT!

- the controller looks silly

Matter of opinion, but strongly disagree.

- they'll jack up the price because they won't have enough at launch

Yeah, cuz the 3DS shows how well pricing themselves out of the market really works, and they won't want the press coverage that comes with selling out their stock... RIGHT....

- Nintendo will confuse people by talking about the 3DS at E3

WHAT. THE. FUCK.

If anything, this guy is not to be lauded for anything other than an example of how out of touch the industry is.

How is he out of touch? Most of that is reasonable. How is a Wii U going to differentiate from the Wii U?... the tablet? Regarding iPhones, they have numbers ahead of them...clearly showing a new iteration. So on so forth.

iPhone 4 and 4S look EXACTLY the same, but an "S" added to the name is less confusing than a "U" added to the Wii name for a completely different-looking product...... yeah, you keep thinking that.

The Wii U's name isn't important, but it's still pretty stupid.

Too much is being made of it, but I do understand the concern. "Wii" is a brand associated primarily with Sports and Fitness. If WiiU is intended as successor to Gamecube, that brand carries some baggage. But we don't really know Nintendo's intentions yet.

Keeping the Wii name is a good idea. Core gamers should care more about the actual games, it's the casuals the name is for. They need to be told "Hey, this is the next thing you need to buy."

I agree; there were some that were legitimately confused - though for stupid reasons, if any of them had been paying attention to the rumors, as a journalist should - and others who took their confusion as a springboard to bandwagon bash Nintendo.

I-I-I-I-I-I find his stutter annoying too.

I agree the guy is kind of a douche. I will agree, I think the WiiU name should change. Not that I think it's terrible or stupid, but I think they would have a better job catching the core gamer market with a slight rebranding. Nintendo has always have new console names/designs, it seems unlike them to brand their new system as a Wii upgrade and not it's own new thing.

Let's be honest... it's not the Wii brand that carries the stigma among core gamers, it's the Nintendo brand itself.

And I agree with Ragnarok, Nintendo's intentions are simple... they will sell to casuals on the name alone, but do targeted marketing to the core audience for the first year. Casuals don't follow E3 or gaming press, they follow information on content via their friends on social media. Facebook integration is going to be Nintendo's marketing to the casual audience.

I think some here are under the impression that abandoning the Wii name would be a symbolic move by Nintendo to those core gamers that they're changing focus, as a method of rehabilitating the Nintendo brand.

It wouldn't work, the damage is done. Nintendo's actual actions will be the only thing that will actually get people to believe it, symbolic gestures are trash.

This.

Fools have been saying Nintendo is "teh kiddeh" long before the Wii naming.

Calling it something cliche and boring like "Nintendo Destroyer" isn't going to sway really anyone, it's games that interest these people that will.

I generally agree. Good, core-oriented games, released over a significant period of time, with no lapses in focus, would improve their perception.

That said, purely for personal reasons, I wish the console was named differently. And I think many people here do too and are grasping at straws for legitimate business reasons why they should.

One would assume that the "dedicated gamer" is capable of looking past the paper thin marketing shell, and base their buying habits on what the system offers instead of names and shit.

Seriously, you guys wouldnt name it Wii something if you were in charge?

I actually am cool with the last name and this successor's name because while they may sound unconventional, it matches the company and the names have some philosophy behind them and symbolism.

What's great about the other consoles' names???

No name is anything negative for me.
