Any issue that can be linked to gender issues, and more especially masculinity issues, will degrade into a smarmy cockfight. I know you have frustration with gender equality debates, I feel the exact same way with circumcision debates. You just can't reach some people when they think their views of masculine culture roles are even slightly challenged with new information.

It's basically a threat to their comfortable viewpoints, and is responded to almost instinctively.
We should have a special new member group with its own tag to match: Smarmy Cockfighter. It'd have all the stigma of being a junior, but none of the restrictions, allowing people to make fools of themselves in new and exciting ways.

It's really disturbing and frustrating how a place that's quite liberal and progressive in other avenues gets this way about gender issues.

Ah, well, therein lies the truth about "liberal" and "progressive". Those are relative terms, not all-encompassing behavioral codes. People are going to be conservative about SOME things and liberal with others, whether they know it or not.

Usually the things they grew up with will be the most conservatively viewed, and the liberal ones are due to their education and exposure to new ideas afterwards.

To use a frivolous example, take old school video games. People scream and shout for hours about, say, Final Fantasy 6 on SNES being the pinnacle of game design, despite being tiny sprites on a screen, and that all the subsequent games RUINED IT FOREVER I HATE YOU TIDUS and they want things to go back to the way they were.

Silly? Of course. But it illustrates the point that we all can fall into a conservative mindset when our comfort zone is threatened, and it takes a REALLY enlightened person to realize when they're doing it.

To be fair, I think a lot of this was more along the lines of people falling for a title that implies that this was forced on the kid and not reading the rest of the OP than actual bigotry.

Don't get too upset. It seems like people with better informed opinions are telling the idiots what's what here. I'm arguing this exact same topic on another forum and its basically me against the rest there.

There we are. I love the mods on this site. Sometimes they may take a bit of time to clean up the trash but they are quite good at what they do. <3

Honestly, as you said, no you shouldn't. But you've gone and backseat modded anyway. Yes this is a very heated discussion, almost aggressive at times, but as this thread proves NeoGAF is a microcosm of society. What, should the mods ban everyone with a dissenting opinion? Whether people are perceived as right or wrong, there is a dialogue happening.

As for my two cents, I don't know enough about the issue or the science/biology behind it. I guess you take the potential side effects of the hormone blockers with the potential benefit of more time for the child and parents to decide the right course of action.
I can totally understand dissenting opinions. I'd never call for somebody to be banned over such a thing. There is a clear difference between that and what people have been presenting in this thread however.

It's been quite a while since I've been as unnerved as I have by some opinions in this thread. Apologies for the backseat modding, it was unnecessary and altogether wrong of me. All I wanted was some consistency between how groups are treated, and it seems that given due time the moderation team was more than happy to make sure it happened, something that I am very thankful for. I should have had more faith in their abilities.

Which falls under the separate offense of being a dumb driveby poster. Less heinous, though, I agree. Hopefully most of those bans weren't too long.

I think we can all think of one person who already is infamous for being the smarmy cocktype...

It was a bit of both. Some of the posts were definitely some ignorant bullshit when it comes to trans issues, even after they were corrected.

Personally I find the time delayed bans even funnier.

Neogaf REALLY needs a list of banned people and the reason they were banned. The community is big enough to warrant it, and other successful forums have implemented it.

It's a good idea because it serves as a warning to as to what the moderation team is watching for, which in turn leads to the community self-moderating, which makes it better for everyone.

It also keeps everyone honest and up front with their mistakes, including the moderating team, and makes for better communication up and down the hierarchy.

Like, every member who has been banned carries a scarlet letter list of offenses committed on their profile? Well, actually I may be thinking too far on that one

But it would be kind of hilarious, regardless

EDIT:
Also, could it be possible that ignorance of the subject at hand may be indistinguishable from ignorance of the article?

So....they were banned...why?

The mod clearly believed they did not read the actual article and just responded to the sensationalist title.

The article outlined how the child had gone to several specialists for hormonal treatment for his deteriorating mental health.

The title implied THE LESBIANS were doing this arbitrarily, making it sort of a political statement.

I'm not sure if I am pleased or disappointed that GAF made it 9 pages with no Ackbar.jpg. I think I am mostly pleased. Still sad my preconceptions were dashed though :)

And people ran right with it too. Despite the fact they have other kids without this issue. Basically big ultra fail all around on this one. Willful ignorance abound this time around.

Perhaps we're growing up as a community that can make its own humor and not leech reddit/4chan memes.

Isn't that a banned meme?

[notspoiler] As it should be. Embarrassing that that became a meme here [/notspoiler]

Nah, the internet always feeds on itself and recycle.

While that is GENERALLY true, I think a community of clever people who recognize how humor works can generate new jokes on its own. There has to be a "prime" who creates the joke in the first place for it to spread, even if it's just a variation on an older joke.

You just need people to stop taking themselves so seriously and realize when it's time to lighten up.

True enough. If the glass were half full for me I would probably agree with you ;)

Nice title change.

Interesting to consider how the thread would have turned out if that was the title from the start.

Holy fuckawesome title change, Bat-Mods!
I do wish the thread creators were more accurate with their titles, but I suppose the people themselves are to blame for reading the headline but not the paper.

As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, the ghosts of the damned and banned try to bring me in to their ways of not reading the OP and reacting to thread titles. Some were banned due to actual prejudice and now reside in e-purgatory till the master hand of the internet decided their fate with the flip of the eternal coin.

Souls or soulless, how ever it may be reminisced by olden fools of yesteryear, or those who dared to voice their uncelebrated and often reviled opinions as it isn't right for other physical manifestations of being to carry their identity as what is seen as their birth shell. If one feels that the powers that be's choice of introducing a person as the seed when they feel like the bearer is wrong and must be rectified then so be it. Live and let live, for it is only so long till we all meet our angels of death.

I still had the old title ("Lesbian Couple give 11 year-old boy hormone blockers so that he may decide his gender") at the top of the thread by the time Auto-Pager got me to the end of the thread, so I was kind of confused by the talk of the title change at the end there. Then I refreshed and all made sense.

Well, a thread with this many bannings should make interesting reading for the evening. I wonder if stories like this one make people who think that gender identity is innate question that belief? Like, at all?

Ah no apology necessary. Yes unfortunately the posters who go kamikaze style into these threads with uninformed hate drown out the genuine dialogue. Looks like most of them have been cleared out by the diligent mods here at GAF! This sort of title is much better for a start.

Unfortunately I think many people would still see it as some sort of lesbian conspiracy. I think those that would be able to question that belief probably would not hold it all that strongly in the first place.

The idea of a lesbian conspiracy or gay conspiracy is probably one of the most offensive ideas I've ever heard. Funny enough I study various aspects of conspiracy all the time. Next to reptiles or truthers that one is at the top of the list when it comes to being bullshit.
