Great opportunity for US to aggressively signal increasingly favorable relations with South Korea to further secure the relationship. This hot moment is an opportunity to emphasize closer ties economically (which would lightly tweak China, annoy NK, and be a good move on all levels) and further establish that US has long term strategic and cultural ties to Asia with extremely firm commitment to safeguarding the free societies of Japan and SK. The Mattis visit was a good step, but we should go further.

It would be a great moment for some hot Abe style president-on-president golf action... if only SK had a president that wasn't in the middle of an extremely well deserved impeachment. Hard to cement ties with a leadership that is in complete disarray.

We should make clear to China that bullying attempts to isolate South Korea economically will be countered.

As I said, once Park is gone, China still can steer the next SK president away from THAAD, or just use it sparatically. It's going to be fun for the next few months.

Just imagine if China was stationing one of those things in Cuba. You'd get one hell of a harsh reaction too and severity of the threat to the US wouldn't be even comparable to what the AN/TPY-2 deployment means to China.

This entire situation is happening because North Korea is fucking crazy and China seemingly doesn't do shit about it besides propping them up.
