In other words, with this hodgepodge committee of people with football experience ranging from novice to somewhat experienced, the most important factor in determining a playoff representative is the "eye test". Seems fair

I know that I shouldn't just look at eye test. But when we look at key comparisons between Oklahoma and Iowa, Oklahoma wins out. In most areas where Oklahoma has an advantage over Iowa, it's by a pretty decent margin. In areas that Iowa wins out, it's by a tiny amount. The only thing that is a clear advantage for Iowa is that Oklahoma has a loss to Texas, while Iowa doesn't have a loss.

Again, I hate that it is rankings. It should just be these are the top 25 teams in alphabetical order. Because ranking them serves no goddamn purpose, unless Jesus comes down and says, "the season is over, play y'alls playoff"

I recall an article last year saying that there were several people on the committee that dominated the discussion, and that those people were from old Big 10 or similar programs. They liked ball control and defense, didn't like spread and offense first. So it could be that.

It could also be that OK St. needed a miracle to beat Texas and a complete suspension of how measurement works to beat K State. But that implies they're actually watching the games.

No good answer here.

Only argument looming is Oklahoma-NDU, and the committee said they have discussed common opponents, so NDU would get that. Very low odds that everyone holds serve anyway. Pretty sure Clemson and Bama win out, but other than that, no one else losing would surprise me

There are some logical inconsistencies the committee has, which is still the problem. Some schools get punished more than others for schedule, lack of big wins, and/or bad losses. Name on the jersey and conference are obvious factors. Yes, lots of games left. But all that came up last year and it's still there

Finally, a bye week. Our first of the season.

"When asked why No. 5 Iowa is ranked ahead of No. 6 Oklahoma State and No. 7 Oklahoma, chairman Jeff Long simply said it was because the committee thinks the Hawkeyes are 'better' than anyone from the Big 12."

Does this committee even watch games? Are they talking about the same University of Iowa team I watch close to every week?

At least he finally just came out and said it instead of dancing around. He's been backhandedly talking down the Big XII for weeks.

Long is an Arkansas guy, which is functionally the same as being a B1G guy. Plus, Arky's home loss to Texas Tech this year isn't sitting well with him at all going by previous quotes. FYI, The only teams that have scored fewer points on us than his team were UTEP and Kansas.

The weird thing is his Iowa fetish, which I really think is just to prop up a potential 1 loss OSU or MSU Big1G champ. Someone scores 50 on this great Iowa defense and they have a statement win in the CCG

He was trying to play through an ankle injury suffered on a previous kickoff, and his teammate told him him to go down to get off the field. Herbstreit called him a faker, and apologized the next day

We all give those guys a hard time, but usually when it's that obvious there is probably a good reason for it (though the reason often seems to be "I didn't sub out earlier when I should have so now I'm going to overact").

The Texas guy that flopped down against Cal a few months back, for example, ended up being out for a few months with a shoulder injury IIRC.

I'm ashamed that you're a fan of a school in the same conference as I.

I, and the rest of the B1G contingent disavow Karl2177 as a false B1G fan. He doesn't have the faith & conviction that the rest of us have in our conference. He is the Iowa State of football fans.

B1G WILL BE BACK 2 BACK CHAMPIONS!

THEN BACK 2 BACK 2 BACK CHAMPIONS NEXT YEAR WITH KYLE FLOOD'S SURGING RUTGERS TEAM.

Even that Texas Tech one you put in there is from two weeks ago, not last week. I just posted it in last week's thread to compare it to the Baylor hit that didn't draw a flag.

::edit::
Also, if you're looking for gifs, the /cfb reddit has a weekly gif thread.

Haha yeah that's the UGA linebackers coach, Mike Ekeler, who has been known to celebrate very hard with players after a big play. Lot of people have been wondering at one point he'd actually hurt somebody. They thought the player in this play got a concussion from the hit, but turned out to just be a headache.

Karl2177 is an Iowa State fan, not an Iowa fan. Your B1G contingent remains pure.

Thank you for this clarification. That explains his bitter pessimism, and hatred of life. It must be hard when BIG BROTHER is a member of the B1GGEST CONFERENCE IN THE LAND!

Meanwhile, Iowa State will be left in the DUST when REALIGNMENT haPPENS again. Not even the MWC will want them.

If LSU gets rid of Les, I don't know what to think. That guy is made of pure superstition and luck, so I feel like if you fire him it's akin to a voodoo curse or building your house on a burial ground.

Heh. You know, every time conference realignment comes up, the more I think Iowa State would fit in the B1G. For football, we'd be a middle of the road team in the west division, and then competing for the conference title in basketball. Additionally, our wrestling program is pretty good, although not as good as Iowa or Penn State. But aside from the officials, I'm fine with the B12 right now.

It is kind of weird for me to see them talk about getting rid of Les. Tons of schools would love to have him right now.

Makes more sense to me than fucking Rutgers and Maryland.

Not to burst your bubble, but there is no fucking way Iowa State goes B1G in any scenario short of an outside body coming in and forcing a complete restructuring of conference alignment. Iowa isn't a big enough market, ISU isn't a big enough draw in either revenue sport, and the B1G has enough strength in basketball.

Great read about Javien Elliott who came from being a walk-on to playing a key role for the Noles this season. I was unfamiliar with this article series but will have to go back and read some others. I love stories like this.

You'll probably like this story about a UTEP player from Mexico, then. Gave away a scholarship playing football at a Mexican University so he could try to walk-on at UTEP. Never got any responses from his phone or mail inquiries to the UTEP coaches about walking on, so once a week he started taking a 13 hour bus ride up to El Paso on the off chance he would run into some of the coaches while wandering around the football facilities. Eventually enrolled at UTEP as a regular student before getting invited to join the team partway through the season.

Incredible! Definitely will give it a read.

Ah, I see. I saw Herbstreit apologize for something but I didn't know it was for that. I can definitely see why it seemed like faking. Players are always trying to play through shit like that.

Didn't the Cal Bears start the feigning injury to slow down opposing offense trend like 5 years ago when they played Oregon?

Then why's Alabama there?

The committee's putting SoS high up there it seems; Big 12's backloaded; if they win out, they'll be there. Same with Iowa State.

It's going to be hilarious when inevitably the committee tries to justify Notre Dame getting in over a Big 12 team because the Big 12 doesn't play a championship game.
