Connecticut Democrat resigns after outed as furry

Kinda surprised at the overwhelming kink shaming. Maybe I shouldn't be, perhaps most ppl here are pretty vanilla and naive about that sort of thing.

Can any furry Gaffers she'd light on the average age of most furries you know? I always assumed it was something that was more common amongst younger people.

Electing a furry to office? Now we've gone too far.

In all seriousness, that sucks that he had to resign over it, especially the out of place bit about him liking rape porn (which he didn't).

Anyhow, the point is do everything possible to keep your real life and online persona separate. Who knows if what you do in your private time will come back to haunt you.

So was it the furry or the rape fic that caused him embarrassment really?

Considering the public image furries have, I'd say both. The rape part of the story was completely misunderstood though. Poor website design.

To tack onto this, it disappoints me how some GAFers still have issues with furries. It's easy to read every horror story about furries because that's the shit that gets the most publicity, but it's a fetish like everything else. There are plenty of helpful people on this site that can educate you. FurryGAF has a bunch of normal ass people posting on it.

all the ones i know are between 20 and 30 but theres more of them all the time, all you need is a cartoon or game to raise a furry adjacent fandom and you will start generating furries by attrition

or just the internet in general i guess. but anyway i would guess it skews young in general, idk i try not to talk to teenagers

It would be extreamly painful...

This is why I give side eye to the people who suggest people's real names should be tied to their online persona. Pseudonymity/anonymity online is important for a reason, you know.

This is a damn shame. Being into something even moderately socially unacceptable (but legal) can completely ruin you and its fucking stupid.

Uh... probably both.

As far as the rape fantasy goes (not for him, but in general), I'm not sure how anyone can be vehemently against it, but then go right back to their power fantasies where they're mowing down countless (sometimes innocent) people.

Yeah, I wouldn't post half of what I do anywhere if I knew it wasn't anonymous. Opinions that are even slightly controversial that are tied to your name/identity can and will come back to haunt you.

In any case not being anonymous wouldn't even really improve post quality, as seen by the countless stupid Facebook/Twitter posts people have.

Eh, this used to be my perception (and so generally was on "avoid" mode), but it isn't exclusively or at all in a lot of cases. As someone who likes anthropomorphism as a device in fiction, I'm finding that for a lot of people that alone is enough. For me, that aspect can be pretty cool. As a fetish, it also seems generally harmless compared to some from what I can tell (then again, I can't really speak to this).

I always talk about politics and what not with my dad and one day he suggested I follow it as a career path since I talk about it so much. I shot it down instantly because I envisioned something a lot like this... except not furry cause I'm not a furry. The thought of running for/being in an incredibly public position and having something like this get out is horrific.

Have to own what you do, even if you prefer to keep it private.

Yeah I'll never run for office. Not a furry, but good lord, if someone found a way to pull my Incognito search history...

You're totally right, it's not just a fetish. In the context of this thread, I'll leave the post as is, but there are PLENTY of people that just like to look at the art and draw and shit. For some people it has nothing to do with sex.

Thanks for correcting me.

No problem. Like I said, I used to make the same mistake. I think I've embraced the fandom a bit more recently due to the fact that there is a lot of unwarranted hate and oftentimes straight up misconceptions about what it entails.

Shit, some of the stuff I don't go incognito for would still probably rile certain people up.

Good on you. Wish more people were open minded about these things.

Friendly reminder that our president bragged about sexual assault openly yet this guy has to step down for a harmless fetish he never intended to be public.

Literally doesn't even LIKE rape fantasy, people need to lay off of him on that. Tolerate means that he doesn't like it but it's not gonna make his boner disappear if he accidentally stumbles on it -- in the context of fiction

Saying he "tolerates rape" is an absolutely disgusting twist of the actual context, Jesus Christ people stop this. Should at the very least no longer be bolded in the OP, if not removed entirely.

Check out the whole OP.

scaly bruh

but you already knew that didn't you

Read the OP, it was completely misunderstood due to terrible site design. It was for sexual preferences in the content the site served. Tolerate was on the more negative side, so he didn't like rape in his erotica.

("But how can it be furry if it doesn't have fur?...")

It's been discussed at length in this thread.

I am aware my point which I should have clarified is that "tolerates rape", irrespective of how the tagging system works was never going to be a good look.

So then what the hell was the point of your post...? It's already been discussed extensively in the last couple of pages lol

I'd say I'm too old to know what any of this is, but the dude in the article is comparatively old as dirt... so I guess I'll continue to live in blissful ignorance.
I'm gonna admit, I posted this almost immediately after hearing it in the Super Best Friendcast, and they speculated a bit how people get attracted to furry characters in the first, maybe because you were really young and impressionable and liked Disney's Robin Hood, or Animaniacs, or TaleSpin...but this guy was already 40 when that stuff aired so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

God I would be embarrassed if the shit I posted on GAF got out into reality. I already have a bad habit of oversharing

So...he's not into rape? Some crazy character assassination happening here then.

I doubt the rape bit has anything to do with it.

If it was purely "this dude beats off to Star Fox" he'd still have lost his job. Americans are still prudish about vanilla sexuality, anything considered kinky or deviant is a major taboo.

No matter how prevalent those kinks may secretly be.

I feel like in the post-internet age this is just going to be the norm going forward. People in the near future are going to have such long digital footprints that simply need to be dug up and politicians will be able to out each other for just about anything. Like a paper trail of likes and web history that will eventually just lead to one embarrassing smoking gun that takes down a whole career. It already happens today, hell people get fired all the time for things like off-color facebook posts or get doxxed by cyber vigilantes, no telling how much smear campaigns are going to target an individual's digital history ten years from now.

Watch what you post and where you go because if someone down the road decides they really don't like you they can gain access to that sort of knowledge and make your life hell.

Can you imagine being born in the last 10 years or so and having a digital footprint from the day you are born. 100 year old digital footprint lol.

Kinda feel bad for this dude.
