Let me know if there's anything else that would be helpful to add to the OP.

The website has an extremely saddening lack of SKILL, GONG, and Yuusha Oh Tanjou.

I guess Japan just doesn't like JAM Project anymore!
i could've sworn i had skill downloaded on band bros DX but either i'm crazy or it wasn't updated to support P

Either way, new songs are really just starting to be uploaded so whoooo knowssssss~

I think I'm going to import this even though I can't play it.

It's too bad they're still going with the 100 songs limit and no sharing online. It could have been amazing.

the limit is 3000 songs and there are online modes, and I am pretty sure you can "share" them, at least you can download songs you just played online, or so I heard.

I really hope you can share online, that would give this game very long legs.

I guess I'll link to some of the songs that I've listened to on the BandBros. site (Once again, quite a useful feature this time around; the ability to officially listen to songs in a browser):

I really hope you can share online, that would give this game very long legs.

Online sharing is similar to DX. You make songs and upload, and then from there people can go download them.

The main difference I've found this time is that it's way easier to find new songs because you can actually preview them before downloading, it'll recommend you related songs after you download some, and you can find and download songs that come on the radio or that people have you play in online MP (which I think is a pretty big deal, because online MP lets you play songs you don't have downloaded.)

The browser based song list is pretty helpful too. It has daily song recommendations from Nintendo and weekly themed song collections, this week's being 2000s anime songs, 90s anime songs and classic anime songs (last week had stuff like winter songs and internet songs, it's not all anime!)

Somehow I found my way to Checker Knights from Kirby Air Ride. Huh!

For some reason it seems like a lot of the video game music I played in DX didn't carry over, which is a shame. But yeah, if people keep posting any good stuff they find that would just be super swell. Hopefully more of it is made soon.

Anyways, here's the near-final version of my Ready Steady Go track, on my mission to complete the Ouendan catalog in the game (apologies that it starts a few measures in, you don't really miss much). Volume balance still hasn't been worked on but I'll do that soon. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be more than open to them, as I don't really know shit about music.

i think it's neat that you can get a feel for what music is popular at the moment by going online and seeing what songs people choose
and then the answer is akb48, kyary pamyu pamyu and vocaloid and i think "oh i already knew that"
though through the game i heard invader invader for the first time and it's catchy as hell

ugh now i'm gonna have to go back and wrestle with vocaloid again to get vocals throughout the whole song
siiiiiigh
at least i think i'm almost done

I would import this in a second, just like the last 2, if I could play it. I'm not importing a system, though. Nintendo sucks - twice as much as they used to - for region locking the 3DS, and of course, NoA for not localizing this game.

i chose import 3ds as my next-gen console

it's pretty neat though. right now i have sayonara umihara kawase, taiko no tatsujin, this, and culdcept via the buy 2 get 1 free promotion club nintendo jp has going on right now. and then there's other stuff too, like dragon quest 7/slime morimori/terry's wonderland, ex troopers, and kunio-kun remakes. also game center cx 3 coming out soon. i really hope a budget jp 3ds comes out so more people get to play these games because all the ones i've played thus far are really fun.
... and yeahhh as much as it sucks there's basically a 0% chance of this coming out overseas when you combine past release history with the new vocaloid stuff
believe me i can attest to how tricky it is to get these fuckers to say anything in english

at the very least i'm really glad there's the online song rankings so people can get to listen to the music

Alright, my first song has been submitted. Evidently it has to go through some sort of approval process before it gets posted, so we'll see what happens! Making a song certainly was exhausting, so we'll see how this one goes, and then whether or not I'll make one again afterwards. Hopefully the feedback will end up amounting to more than "ACCEPTED" or "REJECTED" so I can get an idea about what needs to be fixed.

40k copies sold in the first week... bargain bin confirmed?

There's so many songs I don't know what to download. And I still haven't found the time and willpower to try to compose something seriously. I'm basically doing nothing with my copy, sigh :(

That's ok, Wonderful 101's JP sales were enough heartbreak to make me impervious to any other disappointing bombas. Plus, I'm having fun with it, so that's really all I'm concerned about.

Yeah, at first I was basically downloading every song I recognized, but now I'm already down to 63 tomatoes after redeeming the bonus Club Nintendo ones so I have to think twice before I decide to redeem any songs, heh. And making songs certainly does require a lot of willpower. More than I'm usually able to build up, at least.

I don't have a copy yet, but I feel like I would be in the same situation. The previous game had music coming out for it even up until recently... good songs, too. I worry that I jumped into this early, I'd spend all my tomatoes before some of the best songs hit.

I'll get it eventually.... as soon as I figure out what Japanese 3DS I want.

Man, these guys are thorough with their checking!
I accidentally forgot to change one "ka" to "ga" (which really was an easy mistake I should've noticed) and so it got sent back, ahahaha.
Gonna fix and resubmit! Hopefully it doesn't end up being just the least of my problems, heheh.

at least we know now that quality assurance works...

Gosh, I definitely learn new things about the versatility of the composition software all the time. Aside from lacking the proper Famicom percussion sounds, this version of Pollyanna from Mother just sounds crazy accurate. I didn't get DX at launch, so it's been really interesting to see new tracks roll in following the release of the game, and I think it'll be cool to see how the quality of the songs improve over time.

To be honest, I've been so involved in the composition side recently that I have hardly been actually playing any songs, ahaha. The game certainly keeps you occupied. Hopefully between all the games the released today and my hopes of composing some more tracks, I'll still find time to actually play the game part.

Edit: BAAAAH i just noticed a kinda decent sized mistake that got left in my song. You don't really hear it unless you're playing that part but it bugs me that it got in. I can't resubmit again until I get the last results back, so I hope it doesn't pass this time... or they give me the option to confirm it being added. Ugh, I need to be more careful.

Even though I don't like region locking and especially that it is kinda new on Nintendo-handhelds it servers no purpose to make multiple posts in this thread about it. It don't move the discussion forward about the game.

Most other people in this thread can play it and have either bought a second 3DS or always had a japanese system. Back in the days you had to do the same for NES, SNES, N64, GAMECUBE and Wii. It's really no different now.

Speaking of songs I'm familiar with, hey, check it out, a version of Ready Steady Go made it! +1 to the number of Ouendan songs, woo!

This is particularly interesting for me because now I have something to compare my version with (I think this might be the latest version I submitted, it still has the mistake, ahaha)! It's helpful to see how someone who actually knows what they're doing handles some of the parts I had trouble with and see what they did differently. Also it's ironic that they ended up mixing the English parts way better than I did, ahahaha.

So now that there's a version of the song up, I'm gonna move on to something else! Need to figure out what to work on. Leaning towards another song featured in Ouendan (probably Kokoro Odoru) or maybe some game music (probably some Gitaroo Man).

@region locking business: I feel that being disappointed in regards to not being able to play is totally justified and it really does suck, but yeah, that's been voiced plenty in this thread already. I encourage people without JP systems to enjoy checking out and sharing songs on the website! It's a rad resource!

just a correction. Linda Linda is actually a song by the Blue Hearts.

There's a great Japanese coming-of-age film centered around this song.

What the fuck you can make custom tracks to share online and download? God damn I would so buy this if it wasn't region locked.

Can you play the voiced part of the song like a normal instrument?

Voiced sections go on top of an instrument track, which determines its tune, and you can play both the instrument track and the vocal track separately. The only issue is that Vocals are their own difficulty that is basically equivalent to beginner and are played by sliding a mic around the bottom screen to catch notes as shown here. It's... not very fun.

in other news how the fuck do you decide what instrument a voice sounds like, ahahaha

Man, I imported the first of these on the DS and I'm pretty sad I can't import this one due to the region lock. :/

Huge disappointment-maybe they'll localize it as an eShop-only release. Hah...

most of the time it's either a trumpet or a sax... at least that was the most common instrument used in the original for that purpose.

I suppoooseeeee, but this is a hip hop song so it makes it kinda tricky, ahahaha.

For reference this is the song. I'm gonna need to do 5 different voices, heh.

It's totally different. The SNES had cartridge converters, the Gamecube had Freeloader as did the Wii before firmware updates bricked it. I'm stating my frustration because I really liked the first one, but buying a second system for this game is financially irresponsible. Listing how a bunch of old systems had the dumb restrictions is besides the point, it's 2013 and Nintendo's reluctance to get with the times is one of the things holding the company back the most. Won't bitch about this further than that, but I did want to voice my frustration and hope this does reach other regions at some point.
