Doom Game Informer Details

Steer clear of this game. They got slammed by Doom fans for Doom 3 not feeling like a Doom game. Sorry if that's your favorite, but Doom 3 is something they're trying to steer as far from as possible.
Don't get me wrong, I love Doom 1 and 2. It's just that I thought the direction of Doom 3 brought to the series was so excellent and I wish more series would do the same.

To me it feels like a huge step backwards to the "same old" because the fans didn't like the new stuff, which reminds me of the despicable way that the Halloween franchise headed after its own third installment. And that's fine, I'm not shocked that I, yet again, am on a different wavelength than other fans of a property I like.

the main difference I see between The New Order and this(besides Machine Games/Starbreeze output >>>>>>>>>> ID Software output the past 15 years), is how MG merely used the Wolfenstein franchise as a launch pad. There are nazis that you shoot in first person, and the final boss is a nazi in a giant mech, but they grew from there to make something that felt genuinely new. They moved into a Nazi alternate future, utilized a lot of post Half-Life 2 mechanics and ideas in a unique way, and exploring some interesting thematic material that was always built into the series, with a surprising amount of heart and humor from the legitimately good dialog and performances.

Conversely, here it just feels like they're content with doing a modern Greatest Hits tour of the original Doom. So we got all the exact weapons back, and all the demons, and the demon infested Mars bases. Only new idea is some AAA game checklist stuff like upgrading weapons and perks, even if that fucks with the simplicity/immediate playablity of Doom. Or other silly shit like canned melee animations or BFG Panic button.

Which I guess is fiiiiiiiiiiine. Its not like there are dozens of fast paced FPS out there. If this can be fast, challenging, without falling back on ADS to punish blind fire accuracy, it could be pretty good if creatively vacant. Something enjoyable in the moment but I don't think it'll have much staying power, especially that Quake 4 lookin multiplayer component. We'll all go back to playing the real Doom that the community has kept alive for so long.

That was the Pain Elemental.

I'm a bit disappointed the Baron/Hell Knights are still using the Doom 3 melon head design. I preferred the quasi-cow head.

Pain elemental. Love those fuzzy brown fellas.

Yeah while I quite liked the Doom 3 art as it's own thing, I think they should have only used original Doom as inspiration and modernised it as they saw fit.

Bovine Barons for the win.

Permanent character upgrades that allow you to swap weapons and mantle more quickly, increase ammo and health capacity
Swappable perk "runes", ex. one gives you a stackable temp speed boost after melee kills

Ok just stop to me this isn't a doom game..there trying to but to me it isn't.

You don't think so? I personally think what they're attempting to do sounds more like DOOM than a lot of things that were done in 3, which I still really enjoyed. The gameplay itself has to be updated to some degree to hang with today's expectations. After reading the article I honestly think they're heading in the right direction, even more so than I thought before. I'm a huge DOOM fan, and sure, I'd love just an updated version of the classic games, but that would only really be appreciated by classic fans. I'm sure some new comers would enjoy it too, but it's apparent they want to appeal to as many people as possible, new and old. We'll see what happens, I'm eager to see more and get more details.

I don't like the idea of the chainsaw requiring "power cells". I hope the good old-fashioned fist makes a return for low/no ammo situations.

Zenimax was responsible for the best FPS of this generation. I have high hopes they will manage to repeat that feat again.

and then yet again with new game from Machine Games :D

Not really i never experienced 'leveling' up in doom 1 or 2.

If the moment to moment gunplay feels familiar to Doom 1/2, and the level design and progression feels like 1/2, then I don't see how adding a new element of character progression prevents it from being a competent Doom sequel. From the sounds and looks of it, this is much closer to what a modern yet faithful Doom should be then Doom 3 and the cancelled Doom 4.

I do not get why does there need to be character progression in a doom game? Why is this needed? It was never there in doom 1,2 or 3. It's just a carrot on stick thing that i do not want to see in a doom game to me this ID Software doesn't know what they're doing at all.

Wait, so idtech6 means they got rid of megatextures? Or is it 6 in name only?

I remember when Carmack talked about idtech6 being the engine where he wanted to switch to voxels (must have been around idtech3)..

Keycards are a nice addition. Hopefully progression through maps are also directed by finding keys and/or devices to move on...I don't want Call of Duty.

Maybe you don't realize it, but this isn't saying much. doom 3 was not a DooM game at all.

This looks like it will possibly be a decent game, but still not DooM. Whish they didn't call it so just to abuse the brand and its popularity.

If it played exactly like the original Doom you wouldn't even be able to aim vertically. What's the problem with adding new features? I don't see how an upgrade system would inherently make it feel not like Doom. I do think BFG being tied to what is the reload button in most FPS games sounds crazy though.

Think they had 2 spare buttons and just used them to bind the 2 most unusual weapons. Should have put them both on the dpad though.

Wow. No modding tools in a Doom game.

Welcome to the future.

(or the past? people will have to hack their own stuff together)

Calm down. It's going to be okay. Doom 1 and 2 still exist.

Play the new one before passing judgment on it.

Sounds awful so far. I'm not sure why they're having a hard time realizing what people loved about the classic games and just making them look pretty. Just looks like a generic shooter. I'll play it, as I enjoyed Doom 3, but I was hoping this would feel more like classic doom

Barf. No thanks. I don't want to be slugging through slow-ass menus when stuff like that could just be either a Backpack pickup found in secret areas or simply there from the beginning (combo system that grants a speed boost etc). Boring and uninspired "me too" game design is not what I want from this game. Rest sounds fine I guess.

Yeah I do not like this in shooters. It ruined Wolfenstein TNO and Shadow Warrior for me. I just want to play the game not stare at a menu all day (or in the case of Wolfenstein constrain my playing style to fit perk unlock requirements)

Yay
- Piss filter is gone?
- Plans to offer "sliders and multi-sampling options" for PC players. Only time in the article PC is mentioned specifically.
- Examples of modes made in SnapMap: tower defense, moddy single-player missions, VIP escorts, racing challenges
- Moddable enemy AI to some extent

Boo
- Chainsaw is a one hit kill on most enemies, multiple on bigger enemies like the Mancubus, power cells are limited
- Permanent character upgrades that allow you to swap weapons and mantle more quickly, increase ammo and health capacity
- Apparently multiplayer has more guns than single player, including a "lightning gun", this might be GI assuming based on what was offered in the demo portions though.
- All SnapMap creations are small instruction files, you can probably forget about custom textures and rooms and whatnot
- Namedrops of old Doom WADs followed by statement implying that they won't be releasing mod tools outside of SnapMap because of accessibility consoles. seems like kind of a big fuck you.

Uh, will wait and see
- BFG and Chainsaw aren't on the weapon wheel since they're used in specific scenarios, Chainsaw is on D-Pad down and BFG is on X. Seems like they're treating the BFG as a panic button.
- Weapons have mods you can find, ex. a remote detonation mod for the rocket launcher
- Swappable perk "runes", ex. one gives you a stackable temp speed boost after melee kills

Character upgrades, chainsaw having limited ammo, and no modding options for snap map is dumb. The snap map situation seems like it's intended to control the range of user created content, and not just a restriction enabled because of the console version. Haven't they learned anything from Skyrim? Skyrim didn't sell 12+ million copies because people really like plain old vanilla Skyrim.

I don't really understand treating weapon mods and upgrades in the SP campaign as if that's some modern decadent console mechanic. If anything, it's something we saw most often in the late 90's and early 00's.

Try justifying a full blown AAA budget by remaking a mid 90s game.

I bet there are people already lining up outside your home, fighting among themselves for the chance to fund this game you want.

If what you want is old doom then that's out there, it's never disappeared and you can get an near endless supply of wads for it. Let them make Doom for the modern times and let's just wait and see how it turns out before we dust off the pitchforks.

Me either! :p But again, this is typically what happens when classic games are rebooted or revisted. Honestly from the little I've experienced and what I've seen and read the gameplay remains, and to me that's what is most important. Especially in a FPS world that still very much leans on iron down sights, sprint buttons, and other modern FPS gameplay elements. It's a breath of fresh air, a large one IMO. So while there may be some new things in DOOM that may graze those gameplay elements, it's still nice that they knew better than to completely succumb to them. I mean, it's been 23 years since the original DOOM, a lot has changed.
