Not really, I buy all consoles eventually. MS and Nintendo's at launch, Sony's when Metal Gear comes out.

I never made any absolute statement like "ps3 can play any disc from anywhere". I said Sony's last three systems have gotten me used to region free gaming.Having even a single game that is region locked means the PS3 is not region free. Again it is impossible to allow for exceptions if you choose to talk in absolutes.

The DS was region free.
Sure, the PS3 is the home system for importers but saying it is region free is factually incorrect.
wikipedia said:Chinese version games can only be played on the Chinese iQue DS, whose larger firmware chip contains the required Chinese character glyph images.
No because the general public doesn't give a shit about importing.
Even stranger, most major studio's are now releasing a lot region-free with the expection of Fox.
And Nintendo will kill it again...the Freeloader team will be hard at work soon
This. Nintendo screwed the fans over with region locking on handhelds. It goes against the nature of a handheld based on the previous reasoning for lack of region locking on portables. I'm based in the UK but own a US 3DS. Have missed so many bargain sales on 3DS games because of this. Ugh. As much as I love Nintendo, if this all comes back to bite the company on its arse some day, a part of me will think that it deserves it.I'm still not over the 3DS region lock...

/off soap box
For what it's worth (admittedly nothing), I must say that I personally am somewhat confused at what you're trying to accomplish here. I must be missing something, because this seems like an incredibly pointless distinction based on semantics that you are insisting is important.
If I wrote a PS Suite Vita game that read the system's region and executed on all regions but put up an error message when run on a US Vita, would you consider the Vita to have become region locked? Just want to make sure I have this straight! It's pretty clear that when people say a system is "region free", they're saying that the operating system doesn't have any built-in functionality to prevent software flagged for one region from running on another. Which is true in the PS3's case.
Also, the DS is not region free by your standards:
Just correcting factually wrong statements. I would do it regardless of topic.
Meh
Would have been nice if it wasn't, but nothing to throw a fit over.
I remember doing the region mod on my gamecube, fairly simple mod to do. It did require separate cards, similar to the Vita.
If the Wii U ends up having something like that, i would not mind in the slightest. But that is wishful thinking.
But to what end? When someone says that the PS3 is region-free, you really think that it's important to distinguish that -- in the six plus years it's been on the market -- this isn't technically true because there is one title that defies this statement's validity?
Why would anyone not correct any incorrect post in any thread? I'm not saying his opinion is wrong, I'm saying his facts are wrong.
hackers will fix this bug
The supreme minority of gamers who would be willing to not purchase a Wii U purely on the basis of region locking are a supreme minority of the millions of sales Nintendo is targeting, as with the Wii, DS, and 3DS.
Not that I'm opposed with people trying to boycott Nintendo because of region locking bullshit, but as long as software continues to sell it's not going to work. The industry itself sill supports region locking as profitable business.
What mod was this? I had a Japanese GameCube but got the little switch added to the back which meant you could also play american games. Loved the cases for the Japanese games. Great artwork and small per the size of the discs. Dont know why the western games came in DVD size cases.
hackers will fix this bug
at the cost of access to all online functionality, most likely
Going by DSi (DSi games in specific that is) and 3DS, Nintendo have done a good job so far securing their systems against hacks. If they do a good job on sandboxing the Wii backward compability mode in WiiU, i wouldnt be surprised if it takes years before the WiiU gets hacked.Yeah if this thing is hack-proof in any significant way, I'll be shocked. It's Nintendo.
Maybe. We'll have to know the nature of Nintendo's online system and ability/willingness to correct hacks. Again I say.. It's Nintendo.
Because it doesn't change any of the points brought up in this thread...
I have a thought, this is not reassuring or anything but this is about the region locking, what if it's possible that Nintendo can be do a system like Sony with the PS3?, like the region locking is still there but it's up to developers to use it.
What do you think?
Not going to happen. System wide region locking is a Nintendo exclusive feature.
Sony did it with the PS1 and PS2 and Microsoft did it with the Xbox (and maybe the Xbox 360?).
at the cost of access to all online functionality, most likely
When was the last time Nintendo launched a home console in North America that wasn't region locked?
When was the last time Nintendo launched a home console in North America that wasn't region locked?
Any chances of them removing this in an OS update? Is that even possible? This really blows. I know I should have kept my expectations in check but just thinking about all the games we might miss out on here in NA really rustles my jimmies. I'm still pissed we didn't get all those Cing games Like Another Code R and The last window
There's not that many people doing it, but the people defending the region lock by deflecting to other region locked systems is not a valid defense (why are you defending this again?). Like seriously I think that region locking should be made illegal in the United States
I could be wrong but the last home system to be 100% region free was the 3DO. There was a hardware bug that allowed launch PS1's to play Japanese games but it wasn't on purpose and they fixed it with the next revision.
i wish Aeana and some of the more intelligent people in this thread had a better answer for my prior question on how to let nintendo/others know this is a priority for some, other than generic "BOYCOTT" answers. there's gotta be a venue to express interest in this feature, but im not seeing it. i mean, ill make sure to mention it in the registration survey @ club nintendo but that's not exactly ideal.
stumps, since you're here:
i think we can argue the merits of efforts like Operation Rainfall (or even less successful ones like Starman.net) for awareness, to what extent do you think that's viable here? because in nintendo's case, i think the people making the decisions in japan possibly have no real idea this is something consumers even value, and i'm wondering if there's any hypothetical effort that could alter that.
*edit crap you were here exactly an hour ago, haha
