Week of November 24th to 30th, 2014.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

On GAF we have various members that stream fighting games from time to time too. If you would like to add your channel to this thread, send me a PM.

Often, some fighting games can seem intimidating to players new and old. Below are a bunch of resources that may be of aid to new players, or handy as references.
  • Learn How To Play Fighting Games Free eBook from Shoryuken is a fantastic primer for new players to the genre.
  • Footsies Handbook is a guide to the potentially elusive, but integral part of doing well in any fighting game.
  • NeoGAF's Arcade Stick Thread is the place to go for questions about anything arcade stick-related.
  • Step Up Your Game is an editorial series by Justin Wong that covers a multitude of topics, notably focusing on strengthening your mental game and playing smarter instead of harder.
  • Tips for first time competitors will help you straighten out those nerves and expectations when you head out to your first tournament.
  • Domination 101 is almost a cult classic article in the FGC, which has Seth Killian telling us how he really feels about the idea of "cheapness" in fighting games.
  • Team-building Guide by our very own Karsticles, which helps make it easier to approach team-building in MvC games, and games with similar synergistic elements.
For a list of NeoGAF OTs for specific fighting games, as well as a list of non-GAF fighting game communities that may be of interest, check out the FGW Archive where these resources can be found on separate sheets at the bottom.

Great throwback tourney, kind of a pity that there wasn't TTT1 or any GG there. Daigo actually won GGXX at EVO 2004, but I guess that victory wasn't as hype.

Or maybe....

During the 3S exhibition, at first I wanted to turn my head away at how bad the play was, but when the full parry happen again I laughed for like 3 minutes straight and it became totally worth it.

edit: also we ran Vampire Savior and Alpha 2 side tournaments at 37reloaded

http://i.imgur.com/KMXdiML.png -- Vampire Savior bracket from 37reloaded
http://i.imgur.com/VyhB4Pf.png -- Alpha 2 bracket from 37reloaded

brackets are there if anybody is interested. Couldn't get Valle to enter A2 once again sadly. ): One day I will force him to play with me damn it! I should probably play a bit more A2, not quite at the point I can beat NerdJosh in it yet.

Daigos sol was so ugly lol. Ume volcanic viper just doesn't have the same ring to it. That dude would whiff vvs like full screen.

What a moment that exhibition was though.

Iirc, he spent a lot of time this year focused on Marvel and KI rather than SF due to having a better chance at dominating those two at majors. At least until Evo.

He dodged a MM against Khaos(talking to khaos in the mvc2 fb group):
Kenneth Villalobos November 18 at 4:57pm - After Sanford S Kelly, I want Justin Wong. After that, I'm done.

Justin Wong November 18 at 5:00pm - But I suck right now. I don't want you to kick me in the head a million times

Kenneth Villalobos November 18 at 5:01pm - Justin Wong DON'T GIMME DAT

Justin Wong November 18 at 5:03pm - I'm serious!! I been on that sf4! 30gs on the line for 1st place in 3 weeks!!!

Damn, Cody got curved lol

I want to put Rosalina and Palutena on the team, especially after that wonderful Palu combo video came to my attention in the Smash thread. At the same time, that'd be more time not spent leveling up my Pit, learning crazy things with Greninja, piling up bodies with Zero Suit Samus or reminiscing about the good old days with Marth.

God damn that Daigo 2014 parry.

RE: top tierz:
I'm already on that Diddy Kong train so I think I'll stick with him, Robin, and Ness. I like Marth in Smash Wii U too despite hating how he felt in Brawl.

I think Palutena is secret top tier with the indefinite Lightweight glitch, but that'll probably get patched out later.

I sent a few friend requests to a few of you here on Miiverse, hit me up for games whenever. I usually play with customs on, no equipment.

I just saw the K9 salty sprint.

I think this might be my favourite reaction to a game ever, he doesn't just leave, he straight up runs away.

I have no idea what the guy in the blue shirt is doing.

OP's post forgot to mention the KOF UM's coming to Steam very soon.

Also, FightCade got updated again. 3S feels really good, comparable to 3SOE post-patch.

I definitely want to learn greninja too.

Horrible realization: I had more fun playing brawl Marth, meta knight and snake than ANYONE in smash 4 so far :(

Really enjoying the uh... character variety.

You should be enjoying it, you're a KOF fan after all :p

Flame Iori / Karate / Kim v. Kim / Karate / Claw Iori?
Iori / Chris / Daimon v. Kyo / Daimon / Iori?
Are you not entertained?

Speaking of which, it annoys me to no end when people say SF4 has great character diversity because 8/~40 characters see play in the top 8 - or 7/~40 (only two repeats!!11!one).

Then KOF13 gets complaints because 15/36 characters see play? And it's somehow more stale?

Forrest Griffin?

New character Kan-Ra comes out for KI in a matter of hours for Ultra Edition owners, and he's definitely one of the more interesting new characters I've seen in long time. Ranged pokes, ranged command throws, and probably the best use of traps I've seen in a fighting game. Can't wait~!

Brawl Marth is way faster, fluid, and powerful than this watered down version. I don't know if you actually played Brawl Marth or if laggy, shitty Marth is just genuinely fun in your mind.

Uh huh. How many times have I watched a grand finals in KOF that didnt involve Iori or Karate in the past year? Probably very few.

Meanwhile in SF4 theres a new character flavor of the month making noise or a MU that doesn't get played ever almost every tournament. T-Hawk, Dudley, Rufus, Sagat , Chun Li, Evil Ryu, Oni, Fei Long, Poison, Seth, El Fuerte etc the list goes on and on.

Keep believing whatever you want to believe though lol.

I have played him in Brawl, and I mained him in Melee. Customs just makes him pretty fun (Dash Breaker being an interesting approach option/recovery option, the no hitbox upB that makes him have increased vertical recovery to be able to go off stage more with less consequence), and normal non-custom shield breaking actually being a legitimate shield breaker is pretty fun too, combined with tipper'd fSmashes killing at much lower percents than Brawl.

So yes, he is genuinely fun in this version to me, thanks.

Palutena with Super Speed and Jump Glide is pure fun.

I usually run Auto Reticle/Super Speed/Warp/Lightweight, but yeah Jump Glide is great fun.

Super Speed is probably one of the best custom moves in the game period.

For those who aren't familiar with Super Speed:

Exactly the mindset I talked about earlier. See Karate => bleh no diversity. Team games concretely increase the chance of characters seeing play. I'm just trying to point out it's hypocritical to accuse KOF for lack of diverisity when:

SF4.
Cast size: 39-44
EVO top8 character representation:
2012: 9
2013: 10
2014: 12
Unique characters across three years: 23

2012 Finals: Akuma v. Adon
2013 Finals: Akuma v. Gen
2014 Finals: Rose v. Sagat
Unique characters in finals: 5

KOF13:
Cast size: 36
EVO top8 character representation:
2012: 20
2013: 15
2014: 16
Unique characters across three years: 25

2012 Finals: Duo/Chin/Kim vs. Billy/Takuma/Shen/Ralf/Clark/Benimaru
2013 Finals: Ryo/Takuma/Kim/Mai vs. Kim/Benimaru/Chin/EXKyo
2014 Finals: EXIori/Karate/Kim vs. EXIori/Karate/Chin
Unique characters in finals: 14

The whole cast would have to get played before people accepted KOF13 to be as diverse. The game has a smaller cast, routinely more of the cast see play both in relative and absolute terms, and the diversity over time is higher in both relative and absolute terms.

So what gives?

EDIT:
Id Global tournament bonus:
KOF13:
Cast size: 36
Unique characters used by top8 players: 14
Finals: Clark/Benimaru/EXIori/Daimon/Chin vs. EXIori/Karate/Kim (9 characters total)

SF4:
Cast size: 39
Unique characters used by top8 players: 7
Finals: Fei Long vs. Akuma

8 different SF4 characters in top 8 is perfect diversity as you only have 8 characters slots(not counting alts). Top 8 KoF have 24 character slots, all the top 3 players at EVO use both EX Iori and Mr Karate, and you have 4 Kim users in top 8, people complain because the same characters keep showing up in every match. There was no top 8 match at this year's EVO without Kim or Mr Karate/EX Iori.

Sounds like a Doom Vergil thing in Marvel.

EX Iori/Mr. Karate/Kim

Clark/Mr. Karate/EX Iori/Kim
Duo Lon/Daimon/Kim/Chin
EX Kyo/Benimaru/Billy
King/Takuma/Kim
Duo Lon/Iori/Shen
Yuri/Saiki/King

Those were the teams used by the Top 8 at Evo 2014.

Only three people used Mr Karate/EX Iori and those people are well known tier whores in general.

And it's a team based game so naturally there would be more overlap. The same thing would happen in SF4.

Enzo, I completely screwed the spotlight up this week, for that, and to the rest of you, I apologize.

I can complete it for next week (long weekend), or, it can go to the next person in the rotation (as my pennance).

Sorry about that =\

You see more character variety in the UM titles aside from Nameless/K'/Chris in 02UM.

Thought it was Kasumi instead of Chris.

98UM had a lot more variety- prob the most variety of any KOF game once you got past Krauser, and Steam version has the Krauser nerfs (which nerf him down to upper-mid) Only KOFXIII came close in variety, and that variety declined as the game matured (which often does happen as a game ages)

As much as I complain about XIII and how it strayed form what I liked about KOF, it was one of SNK's better balancing efforts, though the DLC hurt it some.
