With the new titles ready to drop I thought it might be a good idea if we try and get a GAF footy community going. A place free of shitposting about whichever game you choose to purchase this year.

For most of us stalwarts, it's always a choice between Fifa and PES and if you're like me, you eventually end up with both titles anyway.

As always the developers promise radical game defining improvements, which will no doubt turn out to be slight tweaks marketed as genre changing reforms. PES has gone heavy with the finesse dribbling this year partnered with Andres Iniesta. This is a context aware, skill based deft dribble mechanic. When standing up your opponent you can flick the right stick if you anticipate the direction you're opponent is going in. Tap it in quick succession and in the right direction and you can weave through the opposition like a gazelle. Some advanced dribbling skills are tied to the player skills and rating though. So while someone like Jordan Henderon might be able to sell a feint or two it's unlikely he'll have enough in the locked to link enough feints through a packed defence. On the other hand, players like Messi will. PES has always prided itself on the player identity aspect of its game. They will have several licensed teams but option files remain the go to for PS4 and PC players. Xbox ecosystem currently doesn't allow for option files.

This year FIfa arrives with Volta football, which is a stripped down version of Fifa Street. It remains to be seen how good this will be. A lot of the development and anhancements have been around Pro Clubs and your own Virtual Pro. A lot are on cosmetic and appearance but there are soem new positions available as well. Again, the promise of not being able to sprint the entire game is there. Any points spent on stamina and pace will lock out other meta stats and attributes to prevent the 'gold build' or template. They have also introduced synergy between traits. If you select a particular pair they will work together to heighten the impact on your pro. Timed finishing is going to be made harder and defending will be more risk/reward with improvements made in the AI support. There will be more reward for 'beating your man' when 1-on-1.

FUT v myClub
These are the grind/lootbox modes of both games. With FUT you can grind for players or spend time gaming the player market to earn currency which you can then buy specific players. Think ot if like an auction house. Aside from that you can open packs of players and hope to get the correct ones to build up your team chemistry. If you run out o fin game currency then you can buy FIFA points for real world currency.

myClub is based more on using scout cards to narrow the chance of acquiring a specific player. Chemistry is easier to build in myClub but you are restricted more in tactics. You have more scope to develop players in this mode as well into roles you want/need.

Wish there was a viable alternative to FIFA and PES. This two horse race has grown so stagnant over the last decade. Surely there must be another developer who can bring a fresh perspective to the beautiful game (yes I'm aware of the numerous low budget and indie games - I'm talking about a big budget title from another major developer or publisher apart from Konami and EA)

Yea it's pretty tiresome. I remember we seemed to have a wealth of these games at one point, or more adventure. I remember the likes of Actua Soccer

This is what Fifa 95 looked like for comparison

And Goal Storm arriving shortly afterwards

Adidas power soccer was a solid effort as well in 98

And this was Fifa 98, to see how the games were progressing

And ISS Pro 98

Then a year later we got Three Lions

Which was up against Fifa 99

and ISS Pro Evolution

The two horse race has seen both settle into their hierarchy. Fifa actively delays bugs/fixes now for the next release to avoid making structural changes midway through the cycle. That was why the defensive tweaks were delayed and not patched in. Both are now focusing on FUT and myClub and just adding one or two tweaks each year to the actual football. Dicking about with physics, animations and aesthetics while thinking the fundamentals of the game play are all fantastic. It's frustrating and annoying.

This. Back in the 16, 32 and 64 bit eras (and even the PS2, DC, GC, Xbox era come to think of it) there were lots of competing football/soccer franchises. Now it's just PES vs FIFA every year and it's dull as fuck. Brink back This Is Football, World League Soccer, Actua etc! It'll never happen, but we can dream.

Forgot about TiF, what a legend of a game!

Red card last man in PES demo

And two stellar free kicks :messenger_sunglasses:

I've completely abandoned to 2 big footy games franchises in recent years in favour of indie titles that tries to capture the spirit of the Commodore Amiga days. Recently, Active Soccer 2 has been a favourite of mine. As you can see, all the names are altered because of the lack of rights but it's still pretty easy to know who a given player or team is. It also has a nice, old school, campaign mode where you can sell and buy players, get new job offers etc. If you're into arcade footy, it's definitely worth checking out

PES has been awful ever since the introduction of FOX engine in 2014 & FIFA has been subpar ever since they started using the Frostbite engine in 2017. FIFA is still a far more complete package though, so if I purchase any of them it'll be that.

FIFA16 is still the best football game you can buy on this gen of consoles.

Been messing more in the demo, sort of getting the hand of the new dribbling now and how it works but it's clunky. And it's more risk than reward. Only seems to be beneficial out on the wing to get a quick yard, it's not really to be used to weave through defences

Also went back to Fifa, trying to get Tranmere through to the FA Cup Final. First round delivered in style :)

On anothe rnote, it's always baffled me that indoor football was always a side effort in mainline games. NO one has really committed to a proper 5 a side indoors, or even a larger 7 a side. The best memory was Fifa 97, or even like a party style game of three and in or heads and volleys. I mean we had fifa street and now have volta but it's not the same really.

PES is for men. FIFA is for boys.

Just kidding :messenger_beaming:
No. You're 100 percent right.

Put it this way.
Fifa: There is not much error to put together a string of passes around the pitch. The movement of players is also ultra responsive and the game can look like a pinball table at times with the ball rapidly zipping between players.
Ball physics are getting better but during the first few months of Fifa 19 the ball would skid around the pitch like a hockey puck on ice. No bobble or bounces (or very little thereof) which made it look very unnatrual.

PES: There is a margin of error when stringing passes together (especially so in PES 2020). Players have weight so you have to think ahead when moving with a player as they would react slower as you would imagine a real football player would react.
Shooting and passing also have a margin of error.
Ball physics are the best of all football games.

At the end of the day Fifa sells because of the name, the licences and easy accessibility. PES takes time to master and you get the best out of it the more time you sink into it.
I know, i have PES 18, PES 19 and Fifa 18 and Fifa 19. I can pick up Fifa now and not feel like i have missed a day even though i last played both Fifas months ago.
PES 18 i started playing again last week after a long time (since i been playing PES 19 all the time) and it felt so different to PES 19 that i struggled and lost my first few games and had to get to grips with the gameplay before i started getting decent results.

It almost is a Men Vs Boys situation with these games.

Get Fifa if you want easy accessibility and you love the authenticity (Official everything) of the game.
Get PES if you want the most realisitc simulation of the game of football and if you want some challenge from the game.

I've had some fun with various versions of FIFA over the years, but for me, it never replicates that organic random feel that PES captures - that feeling that things are open and anything could happen.

Between PES and Football Manager, I don't think I could handle any more virtual soccer.
