Go is the most complicated perfect information board game mankind has invented. It possesses more possibilities than the total number of atoms in the visible universe. Strategies in GO often rely on pattern recognition and intuition, in addition to careful calculation. Not until one year ago, GO remains the only perfect information board game that even the most advanced AI cannot beat top real human players in the world.
Then enters AlphaGo, a computer program developed by Google DeepMind dedicated to solve this game. In March 2016, AlphaGo challenged Lee Sedol, 18-time world champion, for 5 games. The prize for Lee Sedol winning any 3 games was $1m. Before the dual, the top GO pros unanimously claimed that it would be easy money for Lee.
Lee only won the 4th game.
But Lee is not the best player in the world right now. The current rank 1 player, Ke Jie, a 19-year-old young man who likes shit-talking opponents, said he was confident that he would beat AlphaGO in the same format after watching Lee's loss.
However, in the first few days , an unknown player called Master has been thrashing players on an online Go platform called Tygem. "Master" beat Ke Jie twice, and won all 60 games that it played against all the top ranked players in China, Korea, and Japan. "Master" also agreed to extend the time-limit of each move by 1 min when playing agianst Nie Weiping, a legendary player but is very old.
After a sweeping win against Nie, "Master" typed "Thank you mentor Nie" in traditional Chinese in the chat room.
Also after the 60th consecutive win against the whole GO community, DeepMind confirmed that Master and another earlier account Magister were both played by an updated version of AlphaGo.
