Can anyone tell me if the PS3 version has the Vaseline filter for AA, can't deal with that if it does I'm stuck waiting or getting 360 version.

Expected as much. The game looks like it was made with a lot of attention to detail and affection for American pop culture. Will definitely pick it up on PS4 next year.

I really don't have any issues with the reviews.I mean its GTA...of course it will be highly received, but I could not relate to the feelings projected in the escapist's review, since i really don't care for third person shooters and my favorite thing about gta is how dumb and profanity filled the games are(I liked san andreas alot). I guess Adams review was a bit silly, but I assume he was joking at the expense of the "hyperbole" talk going on to a degree and just genuinely loves the game.

"•Optional missions are the thinnest padding GTA has ever had.
•Non-Trevor player-characters are largely forgettable.
•Some tedious and dated navel-gazing in the plot.
•Lots of tedious missions in between the exciting ones."

Those aspects along with reports that the gameplay, while being slightly improved, is still clunky/shallow/subpar/repetitive has convinced me this is just another Rockstar game and nothing to get excited about. Whew. This month was already too damn expensive.

To be fair, I only played SA for maybe 30 minutes at a friend's house. It didn't grab me. I'm trying to work my way through the motorcylce GTA and the gay Tony one but those are both a chore as well.

I came in to see the hyperbolic reviews proclaiming it to be one of the best games ever. And then to voice my opinion that the SAME thing happened with the last game, and years later many people will look back and say it was overrated.

The thing that really sold me on GTA IV was a review that proclaimed the online play to be amazing and one of the best online experiences of all time (IGN I think). And then I played that first and it fucking sucked. So....we shall see.

I'd wait for the pc version anyway, so I've got plenty of time.
Welcome to the world of not having the same opinion as other people! ;)

But really, while the hype over GTAIV didn't really seem warranted looking back, I think GTAV is quite a different proposition, leaning heavily towards trying to emulate what they did right in San Andreas. You're sceptical, that's fair, but I wouldn't go automatically assuming the reviews are all just hyberbole.

Although I don't think GTA IV deserved the 10s it received, this logic doesn't make any sense. Technology advances with time. GTA IV came out in 2008 and at that time it was pretty impressive.

It does when you consider it's not necessarily an argument from a tech perspective. Mission checkpoint problems, driving mechanics, shooting mechanics, UI, etc. are things which didn't need to rely on tech advancements to improve.

It's very easy to grasp.

People just see Sessler comparing a game's writing to *gasp* a book and lose their minds for whatever reason. It's obvious he's talking about the game being a window into our culture rather than a 1:1 ctsomparison of writing quality.

Its still absolutely ridiculous. To declare that in 200 years society will look back on this game as a window into the culture? Any review of a movie, book or TV show that made a similar claim would be just as stupid.

Escapist's review is spot on about most "AAA" games today. Games like this are the reason I have to lock myself up in a room at like 11 pm just to play video games. I can see having to do that if you enjoy watching XXX pornography, but playing a video game shouldn't be like that.

So many games are going this direction. It's embarrassing that this industry is just a notch above porn with it's so-called "AAA" titles.

Thank God for Nintendo and indie developers, but this industry has a long way to go. Millions upon millions of people go to see summer blockbusters that know how to make the trade-off between family-friendly and thrilling action. Yet somehow games have to go over-the-top in order to even think about making a profit.

No, I won't be buying GTA V.

This is like going to see the expendables and complaining about the violence. This is a gta game. There is violence. There is sex. It's over the top. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be gta, it would be red dead redemption or similar

Sessler has to be trolling with this

"I can imagine, 200 years from now, like our reading of Dickens, the game will be regarded as a catalog of our contemporary travails, an accelerated reality bearing more truth than just gazing at our own reflection."

I don't know him that well though. There are those who gauge games' value in this way.

So, what has been the average respond of the entire gaming community to reviews that gave less than 10/10? Attacks through twitter? Death threats?
Checked gamespot forums myself and people have been attacking Carolyn Petit there for the most insane things (mutant, retard, whore, you name it), just because she had the audacity to give it a 9/10. I understand the rage such reviews have brought forth though, as not foaming at the mouth at everything Rockstar makes and not giving their games 11/10 has been deemed unacceptable for a long time now.

Not getting this on release, but will probably try it out later when it decreases in price. I just hope this isn't GTA IV all over again.

Think there's a petition going around to get her fired...

So it's spot on for your sensibilities. You're clearly not the type to play open world games where the protagonist is a morally reprehensible character. That review is for you, not the majority of gta fans. That's fine. We kinda know what we're getting into by now.

Yeah, and to each his own. But I think the point of the review is that the game doesn't elevate the art form. It just goes for the cheap and easy thrills.

The reason I absolutely detest GTA, and it's no fault of Rockstar, is the effect that it had on the rest of the industry. Every game uses that cheap formula to rack up sales. I just don't see how a character yelling "Die mothefucker!!!!" elevates a game. GTA would be a C-level movie.

Soon people will get bored with the murder simulation and how will Rockstar sell-out next? Will GTA 10 end up being Hot Coffee the game where you're a pimp or a porn monger?

Ugh so Gametrailers review may or may not have a tiny spoiler in the review. Still a fantastic review though, worth watching as they show a lot of the awesome stuff you get to do, got me psyched.

Patrick mcreary from gta4 is in the game

Edit: so really gaming community, we are trying to get someone fired for giving a 9/10? We are mocking all the low review scores? Ugh sometimes I hate being a gamer and being lumped in with all those detestable people.

I posted this in the other thread, but it was locked so:

I wonder how many people making fun of Sessler's Dickens quote have actually read Dickens in any real critical way.

There's nothing wrong with that quote. It's not about quality of writing (though that seems high here). He's just saying that like Dickens' work is a window into that time period GTAV will be a window into ours one day. That's...true. It will be a very interesting work to look at for someone 100 or 200 years from now. It seems to be quite the cultural time capsule of 2010-2013 in terms of tone.

Eh there's thousands of those in this information age, there's nothing special about that if you look at it that way. Not many writers in dickens times actually wrote about the truth of how society was then especially of the poor which the upper class cared very little about. Considering even being able to read and write required generally required a certain level of upbringing it's not surprising.

Hence why people scoff at the comparison because it is fairly ridiculous.

All the praise for the story will be laughed at in retrospect I'm guessing. It's all just so goddamn hyperbolic again.

Ok my copy has turned up, am i safe to play this online?

If you acquired the game through legitimate means, play it. It's not on you if a store broke street date.

edit: Folks, I don't think Lettuce is talking about playing it online. I think they mean "while online", as in, Microsoft/Sony can see you're playing it.

Sounds like they should have just had Trevor and made the other 2 guys side characters.

I still love the GTA formula though, so I'm still excited.

PS3. It's the best version.

OT.

Nope.

End OT.

After reading some of the reviews some seem to score a little higher than the words. But the escapist one comes off as being low to make a point in my opinion.

I agree. It seems quite a few of these reviews, high or low, don't match the content with the score. The escapist sounds more like a 4/4.5 and a couple of the highs sounds like a 9.

I wouldn't doubt that 6 months from now the game fits nicely between these scores and is just a solid, Rockstar game.

Review of reviews: 7.36/8.93

Yes. I've been playing since Saturday while connected to LIVE and I'm still okay.

Played for about 18 hours so far. Game is godly and it doesn't even have the multiplayer yet.

Why?

How many individual pieces of media bring together so much satire and reflection of our society that this game seems to be doing though? How many create a virtual city so full of references, radio stations fake ads, and what-have-you that a game like this does? Not many. Does it hold less value than Dickens comparatively? Of course it does. I think it still has more value as a cultural window than most movies or games do though.

I'm not even the biggest GTA fan but I can see the value that this game could potentially have as a window into this time sometime in the future.

Dude this game won't even be playable in next Gen consoles (no BC) forget 10 years from now.

With this game costing about 265m dollars I am not surprised of the moneyhats.
Also, why do I always have the feeling that this game always receives so much 10s across the board only because of the technical achievement and giant scope of the game?

Months later you always look back and shake your head about it because the story and narrative are cringe-worthy and the violent, conservative, macho, sometimes rascist and misogynic attitude of the game are despicable. Especially now the graphics this generation make it less cartoony (like last generation) and more realistic.

Although this is my personal opinion. I respect every other one's opinion.

GTA has lampooned those on the right far more than it's ever parodied those on the left.

The real problem with "Citizen Kane" statements is that movies like Citizen Kane weren't instantly recognized as the best movie ever made by every single film critic. Deciding on how a game will stand the test of time is not something you, Mr. Game Reviewer, get to declare before the game is even released. Review the actual game, you're a video game reviewer not a prognosticating blowhard historian. Don't try to tell us what the game will be in 200 years, it just makes you look silly and bought off. Tell us what the game is now.

Review Of GTA V*
Grand Theft Auto V is the fifth game in Rockstar’s epic fun mayhem but also serious grown up storytelling franchise. This game’s world based on a major American City is even bigger than the last GTA, and that one was pretty big. You can do a lot of things, but not too many things, just enough things.

Most of the things you can do are helicopter, base jump, shoot, drive, run, swim. Whether or not you can swim in GTA is very important. There are even more unique cars with satirical names like a Jaguar except it starts with F and the writing is very witty. You can also go on the internet in GTA and it’s all sick and funny just like the real internet where you’re reading this very review and about to get mad. Only in truly interactive entertainment do our souls see a mirror and that is exactly what Rockstar has told us it is doing since it started making GTA games.

Instead of only playing as one gross man who commits crimes and swears a lot, you get to play as three different ones. My press kit says this is a narrative innovation. You can’t be a woman. I could be lazy and say this is because women do not commit crimes or swear and nor should they want to, but instead I’m going to come right out and say it’s misogynistic. What, you want to leave me death threats? Go for it! Games are about feeling powerful, and about you getting your way!

Anyway the thing with 3 different guys doesn’t really do everything they said it was going to do, but whatever, it’s the culmination of a great vision and this is why we video gaming. Back to the thing which matters, which is is this GTA better than the GTA which came before it. If you like GTA, sure it is! If you like GTA you should buy this game. I know I will. It’s a cultural revolution 9.7/10

(*I haven’t played this game yet, but boy am I fucking glad I didn’t actually have to review it).

That's because their batch of bannings come later with a patch. I would never break street date on a MS console.
