Graphic Design |OT| Be, INdesign

Playing around with ideas for a mate. He's getting into some music stuff, so he needs an image. Never really had a go at proper design so it's all so very new...

His name is Vincent. If you didn't get it.

What font is that?

Nice to see this thread a bit active. My friend (same one I did that P* thing for) wants something for his band, 'Luminary'. I'm doing it for free, and I kinda don't have to time or effort to come up with something.

I'd like some help, he wants some kind of crazy and progressive emblem or logo to represent
this type of music. Furthermore, he wants it layered on top of this image.

So the style has to be rock/progressive and look decent on top of that double helix fractal art. I've come up with a few things but tbh, i'm stumped and not liking what i've come up with.

I'd like some help, just some ideas/concepts to work off of.

[edit] Oh and actually, he's apparently gonna give me an iTunes gift card for my efforts (lol), so if someone helps with this I could gift them something from iTunes (songs/videos/apps) in the 5-10 bucks range.

Thanks in advanced, i'd like to just tell him no, but he's an old friend and a good guy.

This has been bothering me for sometime, can anybody match this closer then I can?

I've had this Lions phone wallpaper I found on google images (didn't make it) for sometime now and like it, but couldn't find one for the Red Wings one I liked. So I'm trying to replicate it.

Can anybody top it? Anybody have any idea how to make that light burst like thing?

Here are some pictures that might help:

Top one has vignetting, bottom one doesn't. That will help to replicate it more.

Think you're better off using more abstract shapes and playing up the luminary name or something, like this:

Colors selected from that image by the way, since he seems into the palette there.

Not set on that typeface at all but something similar I think would be good.

Darken up the edges of the image(grab a black brush with a soft edge), and add a center gradient mask to the burst you're using.

Still needs tinkering though. If you want the .psd I can put up a link. I also used a light beam brush instead of the provided file.

Bah, Crude's version of the middle logo is better due to the added black border thickness, but Devo's BG is more loyal and accurate to the blue version. So here's my take merger;

Geez guys just make the background all red. It will look much better.

Thanks for the help
(esp. in the irc)
. I was developing this further but he ended up taking what I showed you earlier anyway, as an EP cover;

Dicked around a bit and made this thing too, lol. Never sent it obviously.

I miss my old design job. It's been years since I've designed anything. I opened up Illustrator a few days ago, just to play around, and realized I forgot how to use the damn thing.

Are you placing it or copy/pasting it?
Is that an illustrator filter/texture on the blue part of the logo? Indesign tends to choke on stuff like that , youre probably better exporting the background to photoshop, resave it as a print res CMYK PSD and import back into Indesign. If its not, then I have no idea! sorry.

I think Indesign has some layout preview that it defaults to, make sure you have the print preview selected and it should fix it.

Yeah, remember to change the 'Display performance' option to 'high quality display' i think it's in the view or window menu. That said, still looks a bit weird how it's showing up...

I'm really nervous and excited. Just got a call from my boss and I'm going to a convention with him tomorrow and learning some marketing things and getting some networking going with people from literally around the world. Apparently they were asking all day today who's doing his design work, so I'm probably going to come home tomorrow having given out my card to tons of people that I'll get to design for.

JasonMCG, I'm loving your style, this piece in particular:

I haven't done anything design wise in about 2 months. I guess it's time to start back! One of the fears that I still have to conquer is try to come up with new styles. I don't want to be doing the exact same thing all the time.

i was working on something similar at work today but didn't have a chance to get it anywhere (spacey abstracted shapes, etc).

that imposters poster is neat, i've always had that idea to reduce logos to their barest shapes and colors. really cool.

one of my biggest challenges is finding a style. i find myself constantly bouncing around different aesthetic spaces because they strike my fancy at the time.

Love that "impostors" piece. I could have sworn I had seen something very similar a few years back, though. Still, nicely done.

Made some simpler versions of the previous stuff, for internal or basic prints;

Quite basic, but I felt obliged do something without using that mess of a double helix fractal art background. :p

I'm in IT but I love doing graphic work even I'm not really good at it. :p

oh right, vertically - I thought I read horizontally.

Being above or below the fold isn't really as important as it once was. You get the most important content above it, and if you so care - scroll to read the rest.

Are there any infographic designers on Gaf? Got a few burning questions....

I can answer some

Did you make this with photoshop?

btw the white part of the gaf logo is too light.

I'm taking a Graphics Design course next semester and I figure I get a head start on things. What are some programs and tutorials I can start learning the basics from?

Most people use gimp or paint.net if they want something free but in your class you will most likely be using Photoshop. You can download the free trial of photoshop and start experimenting. This guy makes really good photoshop turotials

I have a interview for a photograph place next week, anybody know where I can get high res pictures of faces/families to practice that haven't been touched? I have some experience but I rather learn a bit more before I go in. It's only a part time gig.
