Just thought I'd post the latest Beyond the Frontline from Forward Unto Dawn.

Beyond the Frontline is a regular feature where the staff here get up on the soapbox and put forward an idea or idea relating to Halo. Each BTF is a talking point designed to start a dialogue and unlike our regular word blasts and articles, the entries are short and sweet.

The “Pre-Rendered” Advantage

Every Halo trailer that stands out in people’s minds has followed a pattern. From the announcement trailers for Halo: CE, to the in-engine trailer for Reach, every game has attempted to set a standard with its previews, a visual indicator of what we can expect from the game itself.

Halo 2 showed us the new and improved graphics over Halo 1 as well as our first in-game view of Earth, and Halo 3 showed us the updated textures and self-shading, as well as the mysterious Forerunner artifact under the African Savannah.

Additionally, each trailer has marked the debut of the new soundtrack for each game, not only presenting us with a visual indicator of what is to come, but an auditory one as well. ODST (at the time known as “Recon”) and Halo Wars were the only two trailers to break from that mold and show pre-rendered trailers for their announcement, ODST because it was not technically a full game, but rather a spin-off of Halo 3, and Halo Wars because its gameplay and graphics were not suitable for an in-engine reveal.

However, things took a turn for the different with the fan community’s reaction to the Halo Wars cutscenes.

Because they were pre-rendered, and allowed for a much more cinematic makeup, they struck an appealing chord… one which allowed Halo fans to see elements of their favorite universe portrayed in a way which had previously only been described in the novels. Younger teams of Spartan-IIs in action, ship-to-ship engagements and naval maneuvers, and open combat. It was an amazing realization that in order to achieve the level of enjoyment out of the game that the designers wanted, the immersive in-game cutscenes were not required.

Enter Halo 4. On June 6th, the first announcement trailer for Halo 4 was revealed at E3 2011… and it, too, was pre-rendered.

If we are to follow the pattern established by all the major Halo releases up until this point, disregarding ODST, this would indicate based on a very shallow pattern analysis that Halo 4 might have pre-rendered cutscenes. Blasphemy, you say?

While I’m not outright suggesting that this will actually be the case – and in fact would be against it myself – I am suggesting that we all take a step back from our established “Halo comfort zone” (coining the phrase now), and consider how Halo 4 might actually benefit from this.

Just as with Halo Wars, it would allow us a much clearer picture into the Halo universe. Smaller miniscule details could be added throughout, giving the most scrutinous of us fans even more content to pour over for hours and hours. The constraints of rendering a cutscene in-engine would be eliminated, giving artists and animators more freedom to make their work as accurate as possible. Cutscenes wouldn’t be limited by the amount of characters and items populating the screen, and would obviously suffer no potential playback issues. If one were to really consider it, the sky is the limit… or perhaps the Ark. Either way, nothing would be impossible, and everything would be allowed for. There would be, quite simply, no reason for any of us (except those that exclusively enjoy fitting warthogs and other objects into cutscenes they shouldn’t necessarily be in) not to be happy with pre-rendered cutscenes, assuming that they are of the best possible quality and that the Spartans are not animated using mocap again.

And a small note on some upcoming content on the site.

Over the next few weeks Forward Unto Dawn will see a wide range of exciting content and articles leading all the way up to the summer, E3, and beyond. Topics include matchmaking, Forge, podcasts, fiction analysis, commentary and much more. We're really excited about the work and we hope that our readers will look Forward to it as well.

What is this and how can I help?

It's my final year project for Uni. Just making a game in XNA which uses Web Services (such as our beloved, soon to depart, API). I'm just demonstrating how these web services can shape gameplay and player experiences. So, my game features names and players which are somewhat familiar to you, in that you have played with and against them in your last game of Reach. I could tie things like current Reach challenges with my own in-game player investment system. Players health and damage settings could be changed in my game to be the actual player's skill level in Reach. Things like a player dealing their k/d in damage. This will actually serve to give the game a false sense of difficulty with better players in Reach dealing more (or taking more) damage in my game.

I'm gonna handle this one solo for now as I'm due to demo it on Thursday :p

I totally want to carry this on beyond Uni (without the API, obviously) so perhaps it can be a HaloGaf effort. We have artists, musicians, voice actors, programmers, critics, journalists, students and everyone in between so there is absolutely no reason why we all couldn't chip in together and make our own Halo game for us to complain about.

Here is a quickly thrown together background I'll be using for my project. The image will be the same size as the game window and the objects you see will move as the player moves in the level. Floating platforms where players to fight will come in later. I'll try take more screengrabs before the week is out. I'm actually using the Spartan sprites from Halo: Zero which I believe is just a 2D fan-made Halo:CE game. However my sprites will change to your Spartan's colours as used in Reach.

Currently I have your character spawn in initially. Then, as if by some dark magic, players from the last game you've played start spawning in as my game grabs their data (god bless threading).

Now All I gotta do is give 'em health/shields, the ability to jump, some means of firing their guns, a scoreboard and a main menu and I'll be done :p
That is purty.

Looks really good :)

Will read!

Was looking trough the gallery again and stopped to look at this:
We're gonna be exploring that :O

Surely Halo 4 can get some attention, based on what we've seen so far.

What is the current most popular FPS that MLG features?

Next tournament might only feature Gears of War.
But they also play Call of Duty (if the developer of the current month's title supports competitive gaming).
And I think they are interested in the new Counter Strike game?
Not sure on that one though.

You just reminded me to update the Gallery with the two Wraparound images from last week's Bulletin, so thanks!

Also, that picture is dated 2010. Just think about that.

Just finished syndicate, not too shabby, worth a rental.

The physicalty and the gunplay in the game was impressive and the last level reminded me of the fight in cyberdyne HQ's from T2.

To UK/Euro HaloGAF: kiss goodbye to any unspent GAME loyality card discounts/points or any unused vouchers. They have also decided to keep any deposits on pre-orders you may have given them and they are refusing any refunds or returns. It's also likely that your local store may be already closed and shuttered.

Hope no one in HaloGAF gets fucked over.

Truly is a dire situation, personally, I haven't used either game or gamestation for the last 5 years, their prices were always terrible.

I feel for anyone who put money down on pre-orders/ game credit. Truly is bad business not to refund people they're money, they essentially got nothing for they're cash. I hear they are also refusing refunds in general. Isn't that illegal? Surely fair trading standards will be all over them for that? Not like they have anything else to lose lol.

I like having Game on the high street, but I dont think I purchased anything from them for years. In a way they did bring about it themselves, as a specialist game store, they sure did overprice and turn gamers away lol.

EDIT: I do hope Game have a firesale though, all but one of my controllers are wrecked lol, and my 360 is in pretty bad shape, thats the kind of stuff I prefer picking up in a shop rather than using online for. My xbox now refuses to read disks, luckily I have a few games installed, but I certainly need to pick up a new xbox before Halo 4 (and all the other brilliant games) comes out. Im hoping for a price drop before then.

Just want to put my 2 cents in again regarding the HaloGAF montage. Try to to keep it to one or two of your absolute best clips, I'm sure there are a ton of people who have submitted stuff, and wacky and zany clips that you find funny are fine but if each person sends in four 30 second clips it's going to drag on forever. I've seen enough painful, 12 minute long MLG montages filled with fluff to know nobody really enjoys watching Halo clips for very long. I'd rather watch everyone's best, versus everyones kinda funny clips, y'know?

Nothing in Game was ever competitive, supermarkets have been undercutting them significantly, hell, there's usually a price war on new games at midnight release, remember asda and co doing MW2 and BO for 25 pounds at release? Crazy.

Also, slightly related, Halo anniversary is riding high in the UK charts lately, pretty good.

I will miss thee GAME. Pretty much everything games related me and Krow have is from there. I'd love to see a transaction history if they could drum one up.

I deleted all my Reach clips like a week before Duncan announced the montage. You will suffer through my Countdown lift multi-kills and you will like it.

I am slightly worried that with Game going, despite them not being competitive, that it will affect game prices elsewhere in the UK. I hope supermarkets dont relax on being competitive now that the game specific store goes.

I guess Halo Anniversary is cheaper now? Im still gutted Halo 1 multiplayer didnt come back. (Im also kind of annoyed at how laggy the co op was)

15 second clips in slow motion

Got it.

How do you feel about lens flares?

Game Group clarifies how customers will be affected by adminstration
Game Group has issued a statement to customers via its Facebook page regarding changes to the business as a result of the company entering administration this morning.

Confirming that Game will continue to trade while administrator PwC attempts to find a buyer, the retailer has warned that many of its services have been altered or suspended.

Chief among these changes are the suspension of GAMEWallet funds, gift cards and reward cards. Points can still be earned on rewards cards, but cannot be redeemed until further notice.

Online sales are likely to be disrupted over the coming days, while refunds and exchanges are also suspended on products bought before or after the company entered administration today.

While Game stores will not accept pre-owned hardware for the time being, it's still possible to trade in games against others and accrue reward points doing so. Exchanges for cash, however, are no longer possible.

Finally, no pre-orders can be placed from today onwards while Game's Click and Collect service has also been suspended.
Yep, confirmed.

I believe Frankie said something along the lines of "we haven't released concept art that hasn't been from something in game". Something to that effect.

Thats what really excites me, its fairly common to see concept art which looks awesome but doesnt map to the game. I cant wait to see some of these locations in game! Some of the stuff in Primordium has me excited aswell.
The crazy hologram camp opens the possibilities for trippy locations in Halo 4.

I agree with this but KyleJ who are you kidding, do you really think its possible to make an entertaining montage out of Reach? :p

I have more fun taking potshots at Reach on Gaf than I do playing the game. True story.

30 second clips
15 second clips in slow motion

Got it.

Keep in mind that the kylej ceiling for amount of Halo watched at one time is something in the neighborhood of 9.5 hours...so just try to keep that montage tight Duncan. I'll be sending you hundreds of dozens of clips of getting splattered by some falling debris or by my teammate's vehicle. Those are hilarious right guys? I've got to be the only person here who has those.

Haven't really played Reach in so long, don't think I really have clips for the montage... Tis a bummer.

I can't agree with this.

In-Engine cut scenes give us:
-scenes that will look exactly like the rest of the game.
-animation data that is required to render the scene will take less storage space than the equivalent in high quality video, allowing playback to cover up Loads and Loads of Loading.
-Dynamic armour, like Reach in cutscenes e.g. Chief's or other characters appearance can change, the changes will be reflected in the cutscenes.
-The possibility of interactive elements, like the ability to move the camera or zoom in during the scene.

Sounds awesome, but I do think that concept art always looks more amazing and fantastical than the final product.

I really don't save clips... I submitted stuff from over the last few weeks. None of it my best.. hope they all make it so I can see Kyle tears.

I would trade all of those for some amazing pre-rendered cutscenes.

-I'll be playing the same-looking game graphically for 8+ hours so a little variety would be nice.
-A few extra seconds of load time isn't that huge of a difference to me.
-Dynamic armor controlled by the player was kind of silly for campaign.
-Aside from Peace Walker, camera control during cutscenes in most games is pointless and adds nothing but players trying to be the best shakey-cam director ever.

NeoGAF's smiling token!
Montage needs Star Trek's movie levels of lens flare, yup.
Was gonna say something along those lines.

I've been meaning to pick that up. Maybe I'll get it as a birthday present or something. Not to go off-topic with something that could be answered in the Syndicate thread, but how integral to the combat is the dart overlay? It was something that stood out to me as possible being too helpful to always have on like VISR was in ODST.

Yeah, I spent my HMV gift card that I've had for ages at the weekend, just to be on the safe side

It's very important, it serves two purposes, it acts as slow mo mode ala max payne and also highlights important interactive objects to use against enemies, such as turrets etc.

However, unlike in odst, you don't really need it on all the time, the game doesn't really punish if you don't use it, something which I quite liked, although this could be because the game is piss easy, even on hard.

Warning, single player took me less than 4.5 hours (hard mode), tried co-op with Xand, had a tainted experience. :p
