"Hand drawn animation is inherently superior" is the most bs claim I've ever seen.

I do't see why there is ever a comparison of cell animation, 3D animaiton and stop motion. It's like saying "which art is better, sculptures or paintings?"

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Man, the emotions in Inside Out barely cast shadows. Wtf. No wonder they look pasted on.

Then tell Hollywood that. That isn't a CG problem.
Its the audiences fault. Mostly furries.

You can make the most stylish, abstract mindfuckery with CGI. The possibilities are endless. But we dont see much of it.

Where is the CGI Mind Game or Fantastic Planet?

Those 3 gifs are why CGI films look boring to some people.
Its either googly-eyed plastic or photorealism.

If you think Brave is photorealistic and not highly stylised, then I suggest leaving the house and looking at the world more often.

It's odd. I still don't like the animation style/art being CG. But I started watching Ajin on Netflix and it doesn't bother me nearly as much as Beserk or RWBY. I guess it's because they worked harder to make it look more hand drawn. But it's still pretty freaking janky, and that cell shaded look has never been something I'm a big fan of.

Again, ask Hollywood that. Or even the studios that want to cling to their styles.

You have to look for them. You weren't seeing Mind Games or Fantastic Planets in wide release western theaters when Disney was making big bucks leaving breadcrumbs for others to follow. You saw experimental or unique works like that at smaller venues. Today, you can go up around on Youtube or Vimeo to find unique artstyles in CG films or shorts. If I have time later today, I'll post some links.

Though I give the general industry some shit for this, the 2010's so far has seen larger studios branching out to really nail and play with unique styles, both in visual and in movement.

ReelFx's Looney Tunes Shorts
The Painting
Hotel Transylvania (1 & 2)
Paperman
Feast
Get a Horse
The Lego Movie (And it's sequels/shared universe)
The Book of Life
The Peanuts Movie
Captain Underpants

Japan, for reasons I'm not sure of, wants to emulate the technical aspects of most japanese hand drawn works for television. Even halfing the "framerate" to 12 for most occasions instead of a constant 24.

Not familiar with RWBY. I know they move to Maya, but do they still rely heavily rely on motion capture?

Berserk 2016 is Berserk 2016.

Though sometimes its jarring seeing the descrepency with the environment. The Good Dinosaur for instance.

The Good Dinosaur was Pixar cranking that shit to 100 on purpose.

While impressive, the overal aesthetic left a lot people mixed on it.

Crossing Eden

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Inside Out is easily the weakest one out of those, couldn't get past the textureless characters.
I don't think you understand what textureless means. Those characters are made up of several layers to achieve that effect. If they had no textures they would look incredibly different.

Your post is exactly why CG artists get annoyed. Watch more films! Also the only one of those films that is photorealistic is Inside Out's real life segments, and that's the backgrounds only. For the sole purpose of contrasting with the visuals of Riley's mind at a first glance.

but again to reiterate the point, watch more films:

Because it isn't about realistic 3D/physics at all.

I don't really understand the process of animation besides the basics and exactly how digitally animating changes things from traditionally animated, but animation before digital had this warmth and grit to it. Like to me it feels like there is a clear difference between hand drawn before and after digital.

Maybe this is purely an artstyle thing. Just what was in vogue during the late 80's to early 00s. Maybe it's the way backgrounds are handled. But even top tier animated shows have this extremely crisp quality to them. Some of them like Redline make sense that that's supposed to be this super slick looking movie most of the time.

This is probably not a fair standard but Cowboy Bebop is in my opinion the best looking animated television series ever made and definitely the best anime. So maybe it's not fair to compare anything against the all time great but there's a warmth and lived in-ness to the artstyle.

But while Cowboy Bebop was the best example of this other stuff still looked great in the same sort of way.

Now a days everything seems super crisp and shiny looking, even the stuff I think is super well animated.

I definitely feel like something has changed but I can't put my finger on exactly what it is and how to describe it.

And I'm not even going into CG.

Maybe I'm just a crazy person.

That has more to do with the move into HD. More pixels available means you can use thinner lines, which means cleaner lines. My Hero Academia still uses hand drawn cels for animation in fact and there I'd imagine that better scanning and colouring software also contributes to the cleaner look.

Here's some examples:

It'd odd. I actually do have a hard time trying to come up with 3D CGI works that attempt the sort of really exaggerated action sequences you can find in a lot of seminal 2D works.

Maybe Advent Children? The Matrix: Reloaded? Maybe I haven't seen enough 3D CGI works to make a contribution on this point either way.

Still, as a counterpoint, Thunderbolt Fantasy (despite being a puppet animation) provides a very interesting look at what could be done with 3D CGI works, were one to apply similar principles to the direction and animation.

People should watch Thunderbolt Fantasy, like right now.

You're taking that far too literally when Yakitate has people orgasming over food

FFXV still has the best looking 3d food in a game
By food porn I mean close up to meals being cooked and eaten, Ratataouille barely has it.
