Happy 4th of July! AMERICAN GODS is the antidote to Trump's America (spoilers)

Since it's USA's Independence Day, there will be people feeling mixed feelings. What is there to celebrate with so much bad going that's been going on for so long? Therefore, I posit it's a perfect time to check out American Gods (Amazon, Starz) that celebrates the diversity and immigration stories that have made USA the melting pot that it is.

First, I gotta praise how good the intro is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkdvWsLgqQQ
Not just the music by Brian Reitzell but the imagery is some of the most striking.

On top of the stunning filmmaking with a very surreal element and gorgeous cinematography, it's a very relevant show.

One of the themes is about how races are treated in America. Shadow Moon being black and partly Native American plays a factor into the plot.

It's even the small things such as white privilege, like when Shadow gets refused a flight but Mr Wednesday gets a first class ticket by just looking like a homeless old white dude.

There is one town in Virginia called Vulcan where guns reign supreme thanks to the god Vulcan. It's no coincidence the town is all-white, and the people give shifty looks at Shadow Moon (our protagonist). Their outfits should make it fairly obvious of the fascist/neo-Nazi leanings.

There's a recurring opening segment in the episodes called "Coming To America" that tells of immigrants making it in America, warts and all. They are narrated by Demore Bornes. Each of them have to do with the Old Gods coming to America thanks to the faith of their people.

Arabs with the Jinn. There's a subplot about a gay muslim Salim played by Omid Abtahi that is incredibly tender. At the end of the 6th episode, they show a nice islamic prayer scene which is quite rare to see on film or TV outside of terrorists.

Then there's the Ethiopian Queen Bilquis, who is the Goddess of Love and basically represents the plight of female sexual liberation thwarted throughout the ages by men. From ancient times, she then comes to Tehran and the party is stopped by Iranian revolutionaries, and then in modern day she sees islamic terrorists destroying temples. But that isn't going to stop her.

The America in American Gods isn't one that relies on niceties and neutrality. This is an America facing an upcoming war. It isn't subtle, but if you're into shows that are in your face with their themes and symbolism and get the blood pumping, this should be up your alley.

I'm a bit surprised the show doesn't go very much into Native American stuff despite quite a lot of similar imagery and the intro itself. Maybe for season 2?

The book has a prominent Native American character later on.

I never read much of the book even though my cousin had it when it came out, but did it have any muslim characters in it like in the show?

While Salim's arc is different the initial scenario is straight from the book.

WUT. All of this is from American gods ? I thought OP was mentioning multiple movies. I should really read the OP carefully and watch the series ASAP.

Haha, the show is pretty out there with its tangents! And it's nice when those immigrant stories fold into the A plot.

It's only 8 episodes for the first season, so should be a very breezy watch whenever you get around to it.

Starz should've bitten the bullet and paid for the Immigrant Song cover from Trent Reznor for the intro. In fact, someone on YouTube made a cut with the song and it fit nearly perfectly.

An FYI, you can get a seven day free trial of Starz on Amazon Video where they have all eight episodes. Just started it up.

Beautiful show, and one of my favorite openings of all time. The "Somewhere in America" segments are amazingly done, I actually teared up when
the Egyptian woman was escorted into the afterlife.

They're planning on taking like four years to adapt the whole book right? Lol. Sounds about right. Three more years of Shadow, three more years of Trump! :p

Yeah, the intro song is obviously a stand-in for it.

I fully recommend that everyone read the book, but I'm far less keen on the show itself. Shadow's kind of an idiot to take eight episodes to realize he was in the company of gods. Like... Did you think they were wizards or something?

Is the gore too much for the squeamish?
You know what never mind I just remembered a scene with Emily brown and a sink in the last episode

And that wasn't really gore but it'll make you squeam
I've tried reading the book a couple times, but I just get bored... I lose interest when they're exploring the amusement park or whatever it is. Not a knock against the book or anything, just my own attention span.

Is the show a good adaption, worth watching? Or do I need to read the book?
I can't speak for the quality of the adaption from the book, but the show is pretty good. But, it's also uneven enough that my main takeaway from it is the thought of what it should've been or might become. 50/50 on it finding its footing next season versus stumbling around until it's inevitably canceled despite having a great highlight reel, Penny Dreadful style.

Great show.

Also it is the only show I know that is brave enough to show full frontal nudity of both genitalia and uncensored erect penises, and not blurred vaginas. This show goes much further than GOT in nudity, yet there really isnt any sexposition. Its all earned.

It maps to the book for the first three episodes or so before it just goes off and becomes its own thing.

Yeah, it's quite progressive in that regard but still kind of awkward when you're watching a huge orgy with your mom :p

When they straight up lynched shadow i had to pause a minute and said outloud did they just lynch a black man on television? This show does what it wants man.

Love this show

I just hope it doesn't get canned

Hopefully they realize what they have. I think some show's that get canned just go on to long. Just because this show could possibly pull gods/entities from hundreds of religions and go on for a while it would not be good. I hope they keep it to say 3-5(max and this might be too much) seasons and 10 episodes. They are stretching the book out but no need to go crazy once they complete the actual story.

With that said an introduction to The Loa would awesome maybe somehow via Anansi.

The apology for the lynching is straight out of the alt right willful ignorance book. Technical Boy even looks like an alt right Youtuber figure.

This really makes me want a Sandman adaption to happen. Hopefully when this done Gaiman/Fuller can work with Warner to make that happen.

The show is fantastic and the casting is stellar across the board. Gillian Anderson in particular has probably the most diverse role she's ever played and absolutely kills it.
