You're in for a treat. MGS1 was fantastic but MGS2 takes things to

a whole

level.
MGS seriously has some of the cheapest bosses. Fucking infuriating.

Been replaying the games chronologically, and I agree.

Currently on Peace Walker, but the magnum opus of shit that comes to memory was Portable Ops. Every fight sucked fucking ass, but the Metal Gear fight itself has laughably bad hitboxes.

I think it may be fair to say Snakes Revenge probably has the worst bosses - it still is considered far and away the worst game in the franchise - but of the Kojima approved games, Portable Ops seems to be full of bad, bad, bad fights. The only highpoint of any of them was Cunningham's theme.

The only one that I recall being straight up cheap was The
Fury
from MGS3. I survived by a combination of trial & error and luck. From what I have seen of Peace Walker, it looks like it will be cheap too with its RPG inspirations.

The bosses can be pretty damn hard but the feeling of triumph makes it all worth it. And having boss fights in a third person shooter/stealth game is awesome. :p

Sorry, should have said MGS1 as that's the one I've been playing.

I don't think most are cheap, they are actually well designed, but some had some really cheap moments and were probably more annoying because of the controls and the way the game worked.

The entire sequence with
Liquid
at the end was driving me insane tho. I literally kept trying for hours, my playtime was like 20 something hours when it should have ended at 14-15

I fired up MGS2 and it already looks and feels sooo much better. I entered the ship but I did something stupid and have been seen, and the auto check point saved me after that point. Does being seen affect something other than that moment and you having to escape? I think I'll start a new save because I stopped there

I don't remember but if you were seen by a
flying robot and it took a picture of you
, that is part of the story. I don't think being seen in any part of the game affects the story but I only played it once.

PortOps isn't apart of Kojima's approved canon.

So I just finished watching MGS1 The Movie on YouTube and I really enjoyed it! Some parts of it were super cheesy and silly but there's were some genuinely heartfelt moments, good twists and I really liked the characters. Going to start playing MGS2 tonight probably and I'm really looking forward to it!

FYI: MGS2 is designed specifically to troll the player. That's on purpose, if you can accept that, you'll like it.

Is Portable Ops worth playing? I've owned it for quite some time but never got around to it, but I'm about to start playing every game in the series (besides MG 1 and 2, maybe I'll come back to those later to see how the entire franchise began) and I'm just curious if I should skip that and go right into Peace Walker. I've played every game in the series besides the original MGS (I played Twin Snakes) and the two handheld ones (not counting MGSV).

Oh god not this shit again

Kaz doesn't give a shit about it in GZ and I don't think Kojima does either

Ocelot even mentions
having to collect the Phillosopher's Legacy by himself for Zero in TPP, something that was introduced in Portable Ops. This is part of Portable Ops' main story, which fits with Kojima's statement.

I played the original MGS maybe ten years ago (twin snakes ... on the GameCube, yes, I know).

I just started and finished Metal Gear Solid 2: HD edition on my PS3.

There was ... some adjustment necessary, to the top-down view and the strange controls. I eventually got into it. It looked surprisingly good, the stealth and boss fights were fun, and I actually enjoyed the fairly insane story. I'd give it a great review, even though I played it for the first time in 2015.

A few observations:

I don't like escort missions (who does?) and the E.E scenes might be one of the biggest offenders in that category, ever. I did really enjoy the sniping at the end of that sequence, however.

The ratio of gameplay to cutscene isn't great. I guess I knew that going in. Luckily for me I enjoyed the dialog and cutscenes and I actually enjoyed the plot.

The boss fight against the Metal Gear RAYs gave me a really hard time. Had to go to bed on that one and come back, and then I think I put about ten more tries until I got it down. I was reading that you have to defeat 20 gears instead of 6 on extreme difficulty. I just can't even imagine doing that, so kudos to those of you who've done this.

I think I'm just going to start up Metal Gear Solid 3 now, at least to see the opening sequence. I might not get too far into it, so I don't burn myself out.

You weren't kidding lol

I'm currently playing as
Raiden
and got to the part where you meet
Stillman
, that's not much progress but a ton of crazy shit has already happened

Snake supposedly dying, Liquid somehow taking over Ocelot's mind and body through that arm, the Vamp guy, Fortune lady and the whole Dead Cell, Sons of Liberty, The Patriots.. Oh, can't forget Pliskin. That guy looks familiar!

Raiden having no idea what the hell is going on

Raiden and you will continue being confused. Enjoy that. Geez, what I'd give to go in to MGS2 fresh again. What a game.

I think If you enjoyed mgs2 then mgs3 will blow your mind. The story is more restrained until the end and gameplay wise it's superior in every way. I love both games but as someone who overcame the controls of mgs2 in 2015 and enjoyed it mgs3 will probably be a real treat for you. It's a masterpiece and shouldn't be missed.

Just a warning though, it's extremely cut scene heavy and radio happy for the first hour or 2. Once the game gets rolling they dial back the cut scenes and codec drastically though. Stuck with it and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did

SPOILERS

I fnished MGS2 a few hours ago. Crazy shit.
I expected some of the twist with VR because of all the talk about it, but didn't really know how it would come into play.

MGS and MGS2 are probably the most I've laughed in a game as well, there's a lot of really cleaver writing in these games.

I really like the plot lines that were started here, really wonder how it's going to develop considering the after credits scene and the name of MGS4. I don't even know who I'm going to play as MGS4! I also need to get Rising know that I think about it.

The only things I wasn't clear about at the end is Rose - The codec conversations near the end where she becomes aggressive and speaks about the GW and society is all AI, right? but everything before that was the real Rose? I'm not sure at what part she started sounding like one. Was she really working for the patriots, or was that AI as well?

As someone who didn't play any of the previous games except Ground Zeroes I really don't feel like I'm missing anything in TPP. I'm also playing MGS3 on Vita now but the tapes seem to do a good job of explaining things.

So, I am on a similar boat as the OP, want to play all the MGS games, feels weird that I haven't. But, unfortunately, just through raw exposure, I've been spoiled on a lot of critical plot points throughout the entire series. Is it still worth playing all of MGS if I know the twists?
