I legitimately believe Pokemon Sun and Moon was used to influence the U.S. Election.

I really need to save that picture asking why you fuckers can't just be normal. It applies to more shit here than Simpsons gifs do.

Just like Tabloid Journalism really fucked up people in 2008 when it gave us Birtherism, it's really gone and made a hash of things in 2016/17 with Neo-McCarthyism hasn't it?

I was expecting "They made the young kids like trump because there is a pokemon that looks like him"

This is much dumber than what I expected.

I mean, "neo-McCarthyism" has been substantiated by actual credible organizations on numerous fronts.

Maybe not with Pokemon leaks though.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
I admit the thread title does come across as a joke, and I joked about this myself last year. But I truly mean what I'm saying and did not intend for this to be simply a joke, it's a scenario that I consider plausible.

And I don't appreciate the "you're crazy!" and "conspiracy theory!" jabs, because I don't think I'm acting that way. It's a farfetched idea, but I felt like I was levelheaded in my initial post and wasn't showing any signs of paranoia or any dangerous thoughts. If I think this and you don't agree, that's fine, but I don't consider it a thought that's dangerous to have, and truth be told we might never know if I was right. It's not like me thinking this could have happened will result in anyone getting hurt or harassed. And comparing my post to one about a dude who more or less is insinuating he wants to kill someone's wife? I think that's a little bit of a hyperbole.

For those who think this is "watering down the seriousness of the Russian hacks", I don't think it is. I'm not a person in power of a strong political voice that people listen to and trust, so I don't shape the narrative. Most people who don't believe me will chalk it up to me and me alone, they aren't going to totally dismiss all the Russian hacks as silly. And if they do, they're probably dismissive of the idea in the first place.

As for the Pokemon Gumshoos resembling Trump, I actually do think that helped him in a way---though I do believe it was a bizarre coincidence on Game Freak's part given development time and they didn't intend for it to resemble Trump to make any political statement. So nobody is to blame for that necessarily, but it was another meme to add to the pile of ways to make Trump "funny" which blew up in all of our faces as we underestimated him.

I'd also like to add for those saying "Pokemon wouldn't keep that many people away!" we just had countless people line up for szechuan sauce because of a television show. I think it's fair to say popculture has some pull.

I'm bored, so I'll just take the bait.

Okay, according to the article. The don't shoot us website directed people to a Tumblr account that made a contest for people to play Pokémon Go to go to locations where police brutality occured. The prizes were Amazon gift cards but apparently there was no evidence of anyone entering.

I admit I should've read the article a bit more, but I actually don't think this contradicts my theory.

If anything, I think it kind of works against the argument people are making about "why would Russia bother?". The Pokemon Go thing turned out to seemingly be, well, "not very effective" but they still did it. It doesn't seem Russia necessarily had a solid goal, they seemed to just want to fuck things up whenever possible. Sure, this can lead to the open-endedness of saying Russia was behind everything, which can lead to craziness, but as the days go on it really does seem they were behind quite a bit.

You claim that a Pokémon leak was distracting you from being able to vote but apparently didn't prevent you from going to work...

Because voting doesn't matter and doesn't personally affect me. I depend on my job to live and thus it is something I have to do.

I'm being sarcastic here, but for many people around my age that's probably the truth...they don't see a benefit in voting. I made sure to vote since I really wanted to be active in the election as I understood the downside of Trump winning, especially with a prominent LGBT-friend who if she were still alive might very well be suffering from some of his "religious freedom" shit.

So I think anyway to get less kids to the poll was a net benefit for pro-Trump, even if they lost possible Trump voters in the process. I don't think Sun and Moon leaking was the ONE thing that stopped people from voting, just another distraction.

Where is the lie in the OP?

It's 'gamers' for you, and I mean it. Saying that as someone who went to school to learn how to work in the business. School had both Engineering and Art/Design oriented Bachelors, so I saw the culture of self-identifying 'gamers' and this thread screams it.

I think that overall GAF is one of the best communities on the web, full stop. But seeing how the posters in this thread have responded to the OP, it just reaffirms my views on the role of games in our social and political nightmare we are facing.

Here's Professor Henry Giroux talking about the effects of Casino Capitalism, and is one of the foremost leaders on pedagogy. I recommend people to read and listen to what he says, because it's directly related and his words are more important than ever.

Between this and that erriely specific thread about killing NPC's and marrying their spouse, I'd say it's been a pretty normal day here on GAF.

So, that's my theory. Someone with ties to Russia, or sympathetic to Trump, obtained an early copy of Sun and Moon and leaked it to the Internet on Election Day to distract young liberals from going to the polls.

Isn't the gigantic flaw in that plan that the 3DS is, y'know... portable?

You are massively overestimating how many genuine prospective voters would have potentially stayed home to lounge around and read a pokemon 4chan subboard all day.

This is exactly what every conspiracy theorist thinks when they give their opinion.

I do agree that it's not harmful to talk about though, so you should do whatever you want.

I think people mocking you is quite sad to be quite honest, and that they are showing their overall ignorance of the topics at hand quite vibrantly for all to see.

Congratulations on going to college and hearing lectures. Most people here have. You are not some secret genius for identifying with a psychopath and then attempting to rationalize their crazy logic because Russia scares you. Which one of you is Louise Mensch's GAF account?

Young liberals didn’t vote for Hillary Clinton because she was an obviously awful person. She didn’t need help from Pokémon. If you’re looking for someone to blame for Trump winning, you can look at the party that gave her the steering wheel and continues to be a pathetic excuse for opposition to the right.

What’s the accusation in general with Russia? That Trump collaborated with them to release factual information that “harmed Hillary Clinton’s campaign?” Well maybe there shouldn’t be so much dirt on Hillary Clinton that shows what a fucking liar she is. This is almost functionally the same as cheating on a spouse and becoming upset when someone tells them you’re cheating on them.

This awful Trump presidency is on the heads of the Democratic Party that bent itself into all sorts of embarrassing shapes to make their rules work for the “next up to bat.” Hell, the party is still floundering as opponents from further left embarrass them and they look more every day like the re-skinned Republicans they are.

No amount of post career-mortem mental gymnastics she has people do on her behalf will change the fact that she was just a transparently shit person and didn’t inspire people to vote for her.

I was not speaking about college lectures, I was speaking of seeing, speaking to, and living with my 'gamer' peers. But lol okay, I obviously struck a nerve with you. And what psychopath am I identifying with? Dr. Henry Giroux? And lol at the Louise Mensch name drop.

I specifically said in my posts that I'm not talking about a 'grand conspiracy', but the actual reality of how much influence inconsequential things such as video games, have on a large number of people's lives.

Well Pokemon is banned in many Muslim countries for this exact reason. Trump seems to hate Muslims.

Saudi Arabia. That is not alot.

And Saudi Arabia is that one country the west, and the Trump administration in particular, is totally fine with.

I forgot which thread it was in, but with the "MS launched Halo on Election Day 2012" I recall someone in PoliGAF one time pointing out how one company does time its released on voting days apparently as a way to suppress the youth vote.

except it is a conspiracy theory, you don't have a shred of actual evidence.

I don't.

But I think the fact we have evidence of Russia using Pokemon's popularity to try and influence political discourse gave me enough pause to consider the notion of them taking advantage of that other ways.

While I am reading, Put the bolded in quotes from you please.

Oh, sorry!

Here's my response to you overall:

You humblebragged about your college experience and then attempted to deflect that you're seriously giving thought to Alex Jones-tier conspiracy logic by posting a lecture that is barely related to anything being talked about. I don't know what to tell you. Cranks like the OP are exactly what people like you deserve in your discourse.
