I never looked into it. Didn't have a use really for front panel USB 3.0, and after a day of troubleshooting, I was just happy to have it working.

:)

I only have USB 2.0 for my front panel due to it being an older HAF case.

I'll mess around with it next time I open my case and see what happens.

Edit - Thanks Piercedveil for those color profiles.

I've had a chance to play around with my new(to me) build.

Thanks to Mkenyon's amazingly charitable prices I have the following build.

Trying to mount a 420mm rad with fans above it by yourself is pretty damn hard... Two hands are not enough.

Do you think I absolutely have to go from case to radiator with a longer screw? My life would be much easier if I could go radiator->fans and fans->case. Worried about the plastic not being able to support the weight, though.

It might just be late but I ordered a really nice Ultrasharp from Dell a few weeks back. According to Purolator, It's arriving tomorrow or Thursday and I have still yet to be charged on my credit card.

Dare I say it...is it possible that I am getting a free $400 monitor?

Anyways, this is my completed build. I got the CPU/Mobo as a part of a bundle deal that came out to $421 after taxes plus shipping insurance so I just split the cost into two ($210) each. I have 12 gigs of DDR3 RAM that will be reused, 3TB worth of hard drive space for storage. I will also be holding onto my Radeon HD6950 for as long as possible (basically until Witcher 3 comes out) to before buying a new GPU. Right now, there are no graphically intensive games that interest me enough to upgrade to the new Maxwell line of GPUs. Tell me what you guys think.

They're completely different things. Different switches and different styles. The only thing I'll say is that if you use the right side if the keyboard often, the Coolermaster Quickfire isn't good since you need to press a certain key to activate those keys.

My post from the support thread, in case anyone here can help...

Well, I got my GTX 750 Ti 2GB in the mail today, but once I installed it and turned on my computer, it just hangs on the blue HP pre-boot screen. I think getting ANY image on screen eliminates the possibility of the card not being installed in the PCI slot correctly, or HDMI cable or port issues at either end.

These are my specs

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...ame=c02992729&jumpid=reg_r1002_auen&lc=en#N33

This is the card

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_1617&products_id=27301

I tried updating the motherboard bios and deleting my old videocard drivers, but the computer still wont boot when the new GTX is installed.
I wonder if it has something to do with the small power supply I have in the computer? Its only 300W, but it says thats all the card needs on its system requirements.
Is it possible HP have put a system in place to stop people upgrading parts? Kinda like how they dont like people using 3rd party ink cartridges on their printers. Maybe I just got a faulty card? I'd have to be pretty unlucky for that to happen I'd imagine.
I sent an email to the online retailer, so if no one here has any suggestions, I hope they can help me.

From my experience with X79, the Asus boards overclocked best. Gigabyte was quite bad, along with AsRock (excluding fatality series). Didn't see many MSI results tbh.

If you don't care for overclocking then go for anything you like. Check out board manufacture software too, imo asus is the best here as well.

So, I have to build a new PC for our office ( Adobe Suite, Video Editing, 3D, media, etc. ), no gaming.

I've currently two builds, any suggestions? The basic difference is that build #1 uses DDR4, Haswell-E and therefore another mainboard.
But I have to say that I don't know how to overclock and I don't wan't to use it. :p

When it is on that screen try pressing Tab and see if it gives you any more info. There shouldn't be anything stopping it from working, there was an existing card that you took out first right?

Can someone help me identify an issue with my monitor?

I have the LG 29EB73-P 21:9 monitor and a BenQ XL2411T. LG runs at 60 and BenQ at 120 hz. I have an i5-2500K, Windows 8 and a Sapphire Radeon 6950 2GB. I run extended mode where the LG is my primary display connected via HDMI and the Benq the extended one connetcted via DVI-D. When I watch videos, anime or play the FIFA 15 demo for example, I can sometimes see some sort of ghosting on the LG but I am not sure it is that. There is some white "pixeldust" mostly on outlines of objects or characters but only in motion. Is there any setting on the monitor itself that might make the image quality better?

Edit: I may have found the error with the latency settings and the German translation for it. Gonna test.

Edit2: Yep, that was the error...

I just tried that, but unfortunately pressing tab doesnt make a difference. And yeah, I took out my 520GT beforehand. The fan on that 520 will frequently buzz like a bees nest since I put it back in the tower. Weird.
The blue HP screen also actually says ""press esc to access startup menu", but pressing esc doesnt do anything either.
Maybe I was just really unlucky and got a faulty card.

Try resetting the bios. Pull the battery, unplug the computer from the wall and press the power button. Wait about 30 seconds, plug it all back in and try again

How likely is it that, say, a GTX 760 and 770 will drop in price considerably over the next few months?

I'm amazed my 660 still runs given how prone it is to constantly overheating.

I need a new case, too.

Ok just so I have this straight (my computer knowledge is very limited). You want me to pull the battery off the motherboard (before I unplug it)?
I can see a battery on there, about the size of a Coke bottle top. Is there any risk to the computer by removing that battery?

No risk. It will make the computer forget its settings and recalibrate itself on boot (your os is untouched, don't worry)

Macho 120? Never heard of that HSF but it looks pretty beastly just based on the picture haha.
Macho is a great HS, but availability is utter trash. It's supposed to be cheaper than others as well for the cooling too. Had it as a HS candidate but you can hardly buy it anywhere common last I checked.

Can I ask for monitor advice here?

I am looking at getting a new monitor, 23-24 inches, 1920x1200 preferred, but 1080p ok. Not too many bells and whistles, to be used for some gaming and mostly home office work.

I see something like this Dell that should fit the bill nicely?
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=320-2676
U2412M - 24" 16:10 panel, IPS technology and LED backlight.

$280 new, but can be had on the Dell outlet site closer to $200. I am looking at it because I have some Dell gift cards to use.

Any suggestions for or against this or other monitors?

Can someone recommend a good wireless repeater. I see a bunch of different ones and I don't know what to go with. The router it will connect to is a dual band n, for what it's worth.

Awesome!

Glad those parts are getting some solid use. Sk3tch would be proud his Matrix is still going strong.

What happened to Sk3tch? I always used to lurk this thread, and he was one of those guys with awesome builds. I've been trying to remember his user name for the last week.

Yeah, it's extremely easy to find. Almost every decent shop has it in stock.

I chose the Macho 120 since it's the best tower-style HSF which fits my height/space requirements. (I have 150mm. The Macho 120 is exactly 150mm)

Corsair CS PSU for workstation class components? I'm surprised that nobody said anything about it yet...
The selection of <=15cm depth PSUs with both modular cabling and decent efficiency is extremely limited. I'll just hope it works out. I mean, 650W should be roughly twice what my system uses, so it's wildly overprovisioned.

Not great. The motherboard may have issues with delivering reliable power to the CPU. 8350 is a power hog. You are also missing a PSU.

I'd advise sticking somewhat close to the guide in the OP. My personal suggestion for entry level specs:

Silverstone Strider series, Coolermaster VSM series.

The Corsair CS/CX has a somewhat iffy DOA rate, and is something that is better suited for a really lower power workstation build. I'm sure it will probably be fine, but I've seen PSU stuff go horribly wrong too many times to trust it personally.

Well PC is now up and running though I have yet to open/install my 770. Think I will just wait till the new cards are announced and see what is what. BTW, I have the fractal r4 case. Should the led be blinking when the hdd does work? Mine are just solid blue all the time.

Well the cpu was an upgrade off another build lost I seen and I said what the hell might as well get a higher price cpu since I dropped the optical drive from the build

The Intel processor you got good enough for 2k at medium settings

AAnd also when it come to mods, what do they effect? I mean do mods take up more processor power or is it more storage on the hard drive???

I wonder if someone could give me their thoughts:

I had a Powercolor HD7870 Myst edition, which was a pretty unique variant. It performed closer to a 7950. It went bust and Powercolor is offering to replace it with a TurboDuo R9 280.

It looks like I obviously gain 1GB, but it also appears I lose a smidge in the GPU clock and I lose about 250mhz in the memory clock.

Any thoughts? Should I try to push for a refund instead?

Depends on the mod and the engine. VRAM on the video card is a big one though.

That proc does well.

The major thing about that suggested build is that it is very easily upgradable. A lot of the parts are selected around the idea that a year or two down the line, you can just drop in an i5 or i7 with a new video card and be totally set, without having to get a new case/RAM/motherboard or anything like that.

That's the other issue with the AM3+ platform, which is that it is end of line. The 8350, a processor that compares unfavorably (in games) to Intel processors released 4+ years ago is literally the best chip that you can buy on that platform. The $70 Intel proc, as you can see, keeps up with it fairly well.
