Bah. BAH I say. In my days we had to train our pet hamster to run in a wheel to power our gaming equipment! We had to walk uphill in rain and snow for hours to buy our games!
Seriously, though, a cheap or free (programming language of choice) interpreter in the bootup ROM or as stand-alone "game" would be awesome. Just provide some useful APIs and the consumers could have a very different kind of gaming experience.
That would be "open enough" in my eyes. After all, the consoles aren't PCs... they're meant for gaming.
